Thanks for making this topic more clear. I know the macrophylla type, that is the most common here but I´ve just bought the paniculata type because of it´s hardiness, blooms and beginner friendly mode. So, I´m looking forward to the progress!

I am in 4b . Oddly enough we have a hydrangea macrophyla and it has somehow survived. It even made it through the polar vortex in 2018 when we were colder than Mt Everest. It was here when I bought our farm, I have never seen it bloom but this year it appears to have buds on the old wood, I am super excited! I am trying to give it TLC in hopes it will bloom. Amazing plant even without blooming. It is quite large. One of my favs.

Thanks Jim for all your helpful advice and free content. I made my front south facing flower beds wider and amended my clay soil with your advice. I am in zone 7a, I have A large yard with some standing water in the side yard because I am at the bottom of a hill. I need to get professional advice and work on drainage before I can build out some shade beds in the back and in my side yard. So have not done much in my side and back yard and I have 2 very small already full shade beds. I would like to have a blue hydrangea in a pot. What is the best medium size blue hydrangea for a container? And what size container should I get for it? Thanks so much

I planted three Incrediball hydrangea this past spring. I paid attention to the hole depth and circumference of the hole as well as the soil and compost. They were beautiful and magnificent huge flowers. After the flowers past the plant was brown and not so pretty any more. Our spring and summer was extremely hot this year so that just added to the plant struggling. I pruned the plant all over since the plant blooms on new growth next year. Even the leaves had gotten crispy and dry from our hash summer. Did I jeopardize my plant and number of flowers I will get next year?

I have these hydrangeas that I've had for nearly 17 years. 2 varieties. My parents bought them so long ago and it's been very hard to tell if I have old growth or new growth variety.. After years of observation, I believe I've determined they are all *old* growth, Alone. 2 subs: macrophylla, big leaf classic mop heads, and "Nantucket blue." * So thank you! My question is: are there macrophylla that only do old growth? And do any go dormant for a time? I've had Nantucket blues for 17 years, for the first 7 or so they seemed fine, then didn't bloom again *until this year*. I could not figure out what was wrong. I live in zone 6b, and don't have any trouble with the others. I tried pruning, I tried not pruning, everything. I thought they were dying or something, never bloom again. Then suddenly, this year, they woke up! I was so surprised! That's 7 years since I'd given up on them. (In a similar case my bestie didn't even know she had hydrangeas at her home because it never bloomed. She's 21.) could winter damage really stop them for 7+ years? (Do they go dormant naturally for a time? Any tips or ideas you have would be greatly appreciated!

I havent a clue what kind of hydrangea we have? We live in the Midwest (City of Chicago) They bloom full limegreen in color very late and at the end of summer they turn white? These flowers grow out into a bush and spread out to like almost 4-5 ft. We cut them down to the ground late mid fall. They take forever to grow out as we see many neighbors that have hydrangeas that are full bloom? Very confusing and frustrating. Should we NOT cut these down to the ground before it gets cold out? Another question can we manipilate these hydrangeas to change to another color. I heard you cannot with the white ones. Any help with answering my questions would be helpful. Thank you!
