Great video. I keep on seeing your vids and think I could squeeze a Tanzbar 2 in my set up but having a Tempest makes me hold back. It does have a lovely sound though. The techno timing thing you were talking about is called polymetric patterns, not to be confused with polyrhythmic. Polymetric is keeping a 4/4 beat going with a different length pattern on top played playing the same subdivisions with one of the instruments. Polyrhythmic patterns are where two rhythms are played on top of each other without being tied to subdivisions.
@CaveWay4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’ve similarly always wanted to squeeze a tempest into my setup. Maybe there will be a new Dave Smith/Sequential offering soon.... RE: polymeter vs polyrhythm - interesting topic, and one I enjoy discussing! There must be different definitions depending on what side of the Atlantic you live on. I would challenge your definition and define polyrhythm as what you hear and polymeter as how you *could* write it down in notation if you wanted to.... The polyrhythm 3:2 fits within a 4/4 bar but I would argue it’s a polyrhythm because you are hearing a group of 3 over a group of 2. Out of curiosity where did you learn to define polyrhythm/polymeter?
@Kung_Fu_Jesus4 жыл бұрын
@@CaveWay I agree the 3:2 over 4:4 is a polyrhythmic as you’re adding two different feels together over a specific meter. The polymetric stuff is where you’d stick for example a 5/16 pattern over a 4:4 beat so that it comes round every 5 beats and keeps rolling. That’s my understanding of it and how I learned it from my drum tutors. Polyrhythms are really prominent in African drumming but polymetric aren’t. On a more nuanced thing the 3:2 is also a polymetric but has the feel of a polyrhythm as it weaves easily in to a 4:4 feel or 6:8. Whatever, it doesn’t really matter just as ling as they drop you in to a good dance. Re: the Tempest, I use it a lot in my stuff. Have a look at some of my stuff on the link below. 6:38 is all Temoest except the drones. soundcloud.app.goo.gl/asNa9QAkt13Hro3i6 Let me know what you think mate.

So now that I watched the whole thing, you did only step sequencing, which makes sense given it's got buttons and no pads, although I'm assuming live record of the synth is what the keyboard layout is for. Have you tried that? Is it an easy way to play a bass or lead line with that synth voice? It was definitely super cool to watch you get that beat going, also got me thinking I'd still love a simpler box offering both drums and a simple synth voice.
@CaveWay3 жыл бұрын
Good question - I haven’t tried live recording using the buttons. I’ve only used it in step mode to select pitches. It does respond to midi fine, but I don’t think you can record external midi into the internal sequencer..... maybe you can I haven’t tried - full disclosure 😃 I use my MPC to sequence the synth voice and it works well - just no glide with ext sequencing. Tr8s might be an option it’s is a great “bread and butter” DM that is more straight forward. It does lack a certain character but that can be overcome with crafting your own samples.

Hey, thanks so much for the vid. Sounds dope. What are you using to process the recording? I've found that the kick 1 channel is particularly noisey to the point where I can't use it and have to reprogram my kicks. Did you use a quarter inch jack splitting into two jacks and then just a limiter on the recording? When I listen to videos of the tanzbar 2 on youtube the quality of the sound seems so much better than using one in real life. Trying to map where I've gone wrong. Thanks so much in advance for any advice or help! Cheers

I use a Y cable - 1/4” TRS to 2 1/4” TS. I usually have to boost the signal with both my mixer and a limiter to get it to a reasonable level. Weird about the noise, I would check to see if the steps you program are automatically applying the noise parameter for the kik for whatever reason. Or when I’m doubt try a new cable 😀 Edit - do the individual outs vs master out make a difference in kick 1 noise?
@otzeki3 жыл бұрын
@@CaveWay thanks for your response. Nice yeah I do the same. The noise occurs when I take the individual out from kick 1 and it basically sounds like static/interference. Almost sounds like a grounding/power related problem but for some reason only comes out of the kick 1 channel. The only way to describe it is it basically sounds like a muddy/unclear recording. Or like a static hum. It's not that extreme but enough to make me want to change the kick after recording. Only when I record the kick 1 using it's individual out...tried using different cables and nothing changes. P.S is your power adapter a blackberry adapter? Thanks!

hi! i've searched on forums and in the manual and cannot find: how can you read what sample has been assigned to a specific step? selecting it will then change it to whatever the current "active" sample is for that voice, no? thank you in advance! (also, it's wild there's no "solo" feature like shift+mute or something)
@CaveWay3 жыл бұрын
Yo! I don’t think it’s possible. I believe I always end up scrolling through samples to get back to where I was...... but I’ll test once I have the TB2 back on my desk. Also agree a solo feature would definitely be useful

@@CaveWay thank you. I sent a note to Jean Marcel Fricke, who kindly replied to an LCD hardware ?, asking about this. It makes me want to use a different sequencer which defeats all the lovely work they did with the workflow otherwise. Tanzbar 2 or AB if you have to choose one? How bad is the UI on AB?
@CaveWay3 жыл бұрын
For live stuff - TB2. For Recording - AB. Or maybe best of both worlds - TB2 and use a midi track from there to fire off a jomox kik module. I find the UI fine on the AB - but it’s not setup to be a live playing type of box IMO. Mutes are awkward and you can only adjust one voice at a time. Nothing as confusing as an Octatrack- that thing was cool but a pain in the ass for me.

Can i ask a stupid question please? I don’t really understand the difference between manual or step mode, ok you need to be in step mode for the knob recording to work and parameter lock but is that all? Don’t you just stay in step mode all the time? Or is that the mode you are in when you create the track but if you are just jamming you go back to manual mode? Thanks man🤙🏻

I read your comment recently. And thought you know what @JLA? you’re right…. I should post more. Definitely on the house side of things. To answer your question. @CaveWay3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think so - my machine is also fairly quiet - The individual outs are hotter but I wouldn’t qualify them as loud. My mixer also has some gain compensation which helps. Outside of keeping the accent button on the loudest setting I don’t know of another way to increase the volume internally. I usually end up adding some saturation or compression to increase the gain in my DAW and add gain from my mixer.

@@all20790 usually when I setup the MPC and tb2 I have a lot of sequences already ready to feed synths and many patterns that I can use to move along a set live depending on how the crowd is feeling it. Hi there, i have a question regarding the activation of the dedicated knobs for the instrument in the center section. When the "man trig/record" is green color these knobs eg Kick1[Attk,decay,tune] respond. But when I switch to pattern mode it is not responsive. eg pressing "man trig/record"+Kick, the color is red and now the knobs Kick1[Attk,decay,tune] dont do anything. Exitting from this mode by pressing "man trig/record" :green color, the knobs are responsive again. These tweaked values in the green mode are again lost when toggling to pattern mode.
@CaveWay3 жыл бұрын
If the man/trig button is red then you can either enter steps or use the instrument/sel button on the right to select the steps (if you already entered some) and in both instances you should be able to edit using the knobs. Once you’ve edited the steps using the knobs - lock it it with the ins/sel button again.
@astralboy3 жыл бұрын
@@CaveWay you are correct, it does work except for the synth instrument in my case. for example you tweak the knobs after exitting the pattern mode and its responds. But toggle to a different Bar, say Bar B. This resets the knob as it was set in the pattern mode. Funky. Works fine for other instruments.
