Carlo Albanesi was born in Naples, Italy, in 1858 and received his musical education by his father, the composer Luigi Albanesi, and by Sabino Falconi. After his first successful concerts in Italy, he went to Paris in 1878 to make himself known, and in 1882, on recommendation of composer Francesco Paolo Tosti, settled in London. In the following ten years he gave many recitals and dedicated himself to composition.
In 1893, he obtained the post of professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he taught for 33 years until his death in 1926 and enjoyed the highest reputation among students and colleagues.
At the same time, he successfully pursued his career as a composer.
Albanesi’s compositional oeuvre consists of more than 60 pieces, most of which are works for solo piano, the core being his six large-scale sonatas of which five are known.
The sonatas are characterised by classically based compositional technique and form, combined with complex, often polyphonic piano settings.
