Every once in a while we'll see a concert that has a huge impact on us. This is the story of one that literally changed the course of my studies and took me across the Atlantic!
Thanks to Gareth Rees Roberts, Stephen Hollingworth and all at Presteigne church for making this possible.
I'll upload the concert in due course.

Roland Dyens many many years ago. And a lighting in a rainy night shut down electricity but he kept on playing without stopping or being troubled in his playing.. 5 minutes later a person from the audience turns on a flashlight. What we all see is Roland Dyens playing with his eyes closed in the dark correctly being one with the music and guitar. A little bit later the electricity for restored. All the times I watched him live he had this gift that he could just take everyone with him in a timeless journey. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video of inspiration!

Thanks David for telling this story 🫶 Manuel's concert in Rome in '98 changed my life. When I met him in '99 in Baltimore he told me that concert was the best he ever gave, I felt incredibly lucky

This reminded me of seeing Frederic Hand play in a small town in eastern North Carolina back in ... I believe it was 1972. I was a teenager who played guitar but had never been exposed to classical guitar music, much less a live concert. The concert blew me away and I've been a classical guitar lover every since. Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you for the memorable reflections and discussion. Hearing your playing rounds out the conversation in a beautiful way. When you were talking about being accepted to the schools and the difficulty of raising the funds for living expenses, well, too real for so many artists--very touching. I appreciate your devotion.

Thanks Drew. It was difficult not being able to go, but I got a lot out of the private lessons, and stopping playing is never an option!

Great stories! The first time I heard him was at Glasgow Univ in the 80s, Takemitsu was there for some celebration/festival, Barrueco played the Folios after Takemitsu introduced it. I can remember this was followed by a piece for choir and bagpipes by Eddie McGuire called pipes of peace - you don't get concerts like that anymore!

I was there! It was after that concert that I met him in a hotel, that's when he said come and study privately with me. Thinking about it, I played him the same Turina piece that day. Also, you have half of this concert posted on your channel!

Thank you David for this nice story ! Lots of concerts influenced me…thinking for example on ‘Friday night in Budapest’ where I had the pleasure to see the three legends live of stage. However, the Albeniz and Granados recording 1979 of Manuel Barrueco was like an earthquake for me after a childhood with classical guitar and a youth full of steel strings, hard rock and heavy metal. I changed back these days to nylon and stood there. Still for me the beautiful reference for the both composers’ guitar transcriptions. Thanks for your channel and great music you give to us here !

Wonder why his mood changed?!! Must have been a great concert. I think I heard once that Jonathan can sight read practically anything, unusual for a guitarist! Thanks for the story!

I think he was more interested in waiting for the concert to start I went to the same teacher as Jonathan when he was a child , John Tomkins in Hull I remember john told me a story once how he gave him a book of studies and he was meant to learn one and he came back the next week and learnt the full book

Thanks Steve. When I first heard the sound of the guitar in the church I recognised it from the original concert recording. Amazing that, I've not had that experience before.

Lovely video. I'm old enough to have seen Segovia play, and I saw Bream a couple of times. They were certainly inspiring but alas I'm still a very mediocre player, having never put in the practice - maybe a few lessons will help :-)

Great video, story and playing! I saw Manuel play at the Wigmore, and it was memorable for several reasons: 1 - his playing and musicality were astounding; 2 - he never spoke once; 3 - I came away exhilarated but somewhat sad thinking I’m never going to play even a few notes as well as he did (but then again who can?). Your video is also poignant as I played the Turina Homage for my ATCL performers Diploma. This was made more difficult by the Council digging up the road outside the recital hall which kept setting off car alarms.

You've shown that we all have stories of our own!! I was probably at that same concert unless it was a very early one. I've not missed one since 83. Why does he never come here anymore? Hope it's not because of this story!
