What FUN for me (at 83 to see my Dad (who died at 83!) directing the choir, in Norway, in 1974. WONDERFUL!! :)

So good to see the late Paul J (Dr Christiansen) once again. Sang under his direction for 4years back in the '60s. Such a privilege.

Thanks maestro... thanks for displaying the genius of Paul Christiansen and the commitment of this group. This was one of several peak years.

We won a statewide choral competition for public schools in Michigan, with this piece. Our conductor/teacher was Bernice Manos, incredibly talented. East Detroit,Michigan, 1958.

I sang this almost 71 years ago and its beginning popped back into my head this morning, so I had to go hunting for it! Lovely!

@@maestroz25 We sang this at Mt. Olive high school in Illinois (in the 1960's)under the direction of Oscar Firnhaber who graduated from St. Olaf and a masters in music from the U of Iowa. He was a great director. We won at State every year I think. We used a version arranged by who Mr. Firnhaber said was a famous director at St. Olaf's I think when he was there.

@@Bobbieliz All those connections are wonderful, they give us a sense of history to go along with the art. My father was a student at St. Olaf and F.Melius Christiansen, "Christie" as they called him in the day, was his teacher. I myself sang in this choir with the composer's son. PJC.

@@maestroz25 We won't know, but maybe your father and Mr. Firnhaber were at St Olaf's at the same time! I wish I could remember all the things that he said about this faculty member (I am assuming this is the same.director as there was so much that he said about him.). But for a tiny town with 200 in the highschool, the mixed choir had about 120 students in it...I recall that the boys choir had about 60 and the girls over 100. Not everyone was chosen for the mixed, everyone could be in the others. But all choruses were so well directed that we all sounded wonderful. When I looked up Lost in the Night today it was so great to hear the whole song again. I have been singing the first two lines to myself for years, but never could hear the rest of the words. And then to find this KZbin was so great. Those days I was a soprano.

I love that they're out of tune and I love how it speeds up and slows down at some parts and I love, LOVE this dark tone. It suits Lutheran choral music so well. Paul Christiansen was a GENIUS.

I think he means they use suspended chords and dissonance effectively.
