Audio was recorded live for the film, and i'd expect the whole fight scene took a bit out of his vocals.

Yes and no. While it was recorded on site with audio, "live" means it was broadcasted raw without an opportunity to edit. It has many cuts, retakes, edits and so on. They have sang their parts many times for the film, and only certain takes were used.

@@LordPodlington If you are interested in knowing why these actors sound worse in the movie than this video and trust me its not just the fight scene I would recommend the video - Why the Music in Les Misérables (2012) is Worse than you Thought kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5rOoohsfJuLndU Dehydrated, 8/10 hours of performance and having to sing without any music are some of the reasons why the director and whomever else responsible made these good actors and others in the movie sound far worse than they would be if you know they did it like professionals normally would do instead of what they did.

If you ask me, they were just having fun and were not realy paying attention on bringing a super song. I mean, they are both great and experienced actors, so Hugh Jackman being unable to stop himself from laughing while singing, proves enough it was just relaxed pleasure :D

So I've heard. I've read some of his other works ("Notre-Dame de Paris", aka "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "The Man Who Laughs", I recommend both) but I don't have the guts to try and tackle "The Brick" yet, as some call it. After all, "Les Mis", unabridged, is about 1300 pages long! He was a master of language, though, no other like him. I mean, "To love another person is to see the face of God"? Wow. Brilliantly beautiful. The world needs more Victor Hugos.

I'm so pleased that this movie has (like you) introduced so many people to Les Mis, it is such and incredible story that manages to give you insight into and convey each characters own personal circumstances and emotions, especially when it is as well acted as in this film. Javert is one of my favs because as you say he is so complex and often people miss this. If you haven't already, I recommend watching Philip Quast's performance as Javert, especially the suicide, extremely powerful.

Thanks! It is indeed wonderful to come across such deep, touching, timeless stories as this one. I was already a big Victor Hugo fan, and the minute I saw the trailer, I was like, "Okay, Victor Hugo + musical theater, I gotta see this." (For any fellow fans, I also highly recommend his novels, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "The Man Who Laughs") I watched the 10th anniversary concert and Philip is brilliant. He's a wonderful Javert. Great singing voice and fantastic acting.

Indeed. He has a mastery over language like no one else. I've read two of his novels--"Notre-Dame de Paris" (aka "The Hunchback of Notre Dame") and "The Man Who Laughs". "The Man Who Laughs" is my favorite. In a really tiny nutshell, it's the tragic love story between Gwynplaine, a clown who was disfigured with a Glasgow smile, like the Joker, and Dea, a blind woman who performs with him. It's a wonderful story. I've even adapted it into a stage play I'm working on getting off the ground.

I find it cute that at around 1:18, Hugh Jackman gets his verse mixed up and just kind of babbles the rest of it. He covered it well, but it's still pretty funny. These guys are great, and their harmonizing at the end was very good. I can't wait to see the whole song!
