On this episode we attempt to cover the confusing history G-Force: Guardians of Space.
Like Battle of the Planets, it was based on the original Gatchaman Japanese series, but unlike Battle of the Planets G-Force attempted to be a more faithful adaptation.
But it pleased neither fanbase and has now faded into confusing obscurity.
NOTE: This is not a history of Gatchaman video. There is no mention of Crowds or anything after 2004. This is not a history of Eagle Riders either. This is about G-Force and it's directly related properties.

G-Force was the first cartoon I ever saw as a kid and I fell in love. I made sure to be at the TV every single day when it was on (for what I guess was a week). When it suddenly vanished without finishing the story, I was utterly heart broken. That year I had a G-Force costume for Halloween and no one knew who I was supposed to be.... :(

I saw this show on various obscure channels in the early 80s. It always came on at the crack of dawn. Changed my life. Even though it was a stripped down sanitized version, it was still light years ahead of anything else I saw in America.

In the UK, it was after school viewing as back then the morning was mostly kept for adults and school educational programs, apart from things like Pipkin, ("But pigs like cream cakes Hartley."), Rainbow, Bagpuss ("but Emily loved him") and some others around mid-day. Ah the memories.

Same with me. I always called it G Force for years which is why I when I spoke about it no one knew what I was referring to until somebody figured it out and told me I was talking about Battle of the Planets. Then I was like why they called it that? I don't remember any planets. lol

Same here. I was really confused watching the video. I remember around '80 watching the cartoons and referring to it as G-force as well. Hmmm. It was shown on WPIX11 in NYC. Maybe I referred to the actual team name and forgot the battle of the planets title. I even had G-force small di-cast metal toys I got from a Japanese toy store. Which is where I got Lionbot before it came over as Voltron.

Me too, as I mentioned on his other video before this on "Battle of the Planets." I was never aware of the other show from the 70s & 80s until I told a friend of mine about how I was watching this "G-Force" show and he said that it sounded like a remake of "Battle of the Planets" with different character names. He was right. Now, that I've seen this video, I was also reminded of the whole "Eagle Riders" thing too, that I forgot happened as well, and it also jogged my memory of thinking back then, "what's with all of the remakes of this one show all of a sudden?" LOL.

@@darthpaul99 I discovered the real Gatchaman way back in the 1990s. We rented some anime movie and it had a commercial for the 1994 Gatchaman OVA (a remake). I noticed it seemed familiar, then realized it looked sort of like Battle of the Planets which I had loved long before in the 70s and had since forgotten about. I rented the OVA and definitely saw the similarity. I went to the public library and used their internet to research what Gatchaman was. That was my introduction to the original and superior version. It took years to finally get to see them, first on some pretty nice DVD bootlegs, then later on the official DVDs from ADV.

I grew up with Battle of the Planets; and was amazed at just how different it was from the OG Gatchaman. case in point - this one scene that sticks with me to this day involved a young woman who wanted revenge on Galacta for killing her family; but when Gatchaman presents her the opportunity to exact her revenge using their bird missiles, she hesitates and can't bring herself to do it. In BoTP, both Mark and Jason support her decision to show humanity/compassion for not giving in to her hate. In the original version, Ken straight up smacks the girl across the face for wasting their time; which almost allowed the enemy to escape (think Joe took them out before they got away, though). That scene just floored me, and I fell in love with the OG Gatchaman as a result. No other version will do for me.

I think Cyborg 009 was another one unless there was another anime with similar characters, and by similar I mean the big nose one. Nothing beat staying late at night watching Fuerza-G, Harlock, all the way till El Show del Fantasma de costa a costa, didn't understand its concept, other than it was a talk show, to be honest and found it kind of boring (well I was a kid and liked the main cartoon alot) but it was hilarious to see Zorak play its band and getting blasted, good times.

I also grew up on Battle of the Planets. Just 30 minutes ago I watched the live-action movie of Gatchaman (2013). Obviously, I didn't expect it to be exactly like Battle of the Planets, but I have to admit I was still slightly disappointed. Way too much drama and not enough action for me. Also, there was no English language dubbing, only English subtitles which were very poorly done! But at least I got to see the Fiery Phoenix at the end! 👍😄

Thank you for this informative video! Believe it or not, I crafted the vast majority of the G-Force Wikipedia page a little over a decade ago. I was (and still am) a huge fan of the series and the Gatchaman franchise, and perused the dedicated fan clubs and message boards of the time for years, soaking up tons of tidbits and anecdotes. The three most rewarding things to come out of this fandom was: 1) Piecing together the Wikipedia page, 2) Acquiring all 85 episodes of G-Force (recorded during its first two runs on Cartoon Network), which allowed me to own this rare gem, document its airing history and tons of circa-1995 TV commercials :) 3) chatting with Dean Andre (the series' composer), who provided some fascinating anecdotes on the tight scheduling (85 episodes over a 3-month period!) and dedication behind this production.

Great video, and much respect for the extensive research! BotP was my first exposure to Gatchaman, and it still holds a special place in my heart despite having the full, unedited original Japanese series in my collection. Sure, BotP was severely edited and it still talked down to its audience, but the voice acting and additional music were both pretty darn good. G-Force and Eagle Riders are unwatchable if you leave the sound on, and the Gatchaman II "Chickenship" is one of the worst designs ever. The GatchaSpartan was dull, but at least it wasn't an eye-sore. Looking forward to an Eagle Riders video though, just to see the whole story all the way through!
@Captain_Sarcastic
@Captain_Sarcastic 4 жыл бұрын
While I am not a fan of the GatchaSpartan, it did make a slight bit more sense than the original GodPhoenix, in that it was made up of only of each individual character's vehicles, so it couldn't be fully assembled until they were all together. The original God Phoenix for some reason wasn't able to go into Fiery Phoenix mode unless all 5 of the character's vehicles were inside the ship.

I remember this series as G-Force, and call it this to this day (though I've become a fan of Gatchaman as well). This series aired on KTTV (Now Fox 11) in LA, and I remember it being awesome, to the point where I created mini versions of the Phoenix out of Lego. The episode I'll always remember is when the Phoenix got heavily damaged, and it had to be rebuilt, and they show it be recolored and everything. Then, to when, I think they went into Ice Bird mode, and the the Phoenix as blue in Firebird mode. Loved the show!!!

I was born in 1970 so I was 8 when Battle of the Planets hit American airwaves. I remember waking up extra early when it aired at 6 am on a local network. My dad would have already gone to work (construction) so I would go into my parent's room where there was a TV and watch it every morning in my pajamas. For Halloween my mom made me a Mark/Ken costume. I even managed to find the model kit for the Mark/Ken's jet which I built and painted. Finding any items was damn near impossible. I distinctly remember making the Phoenix with my Lego.

Kid Rhino put out a few episodes of each show on DVD in the early 2000s and I was very unimpressed with BotP vs. G-Force. Now that we have the entire original series with a more faithful dub - we finally have the whole series intact. This 2005 dub has some issues but is much better than the previous US versions. Although it's kinda sad that these versions are now legally lost in time. It's how some people were introduced to anime.

It makes sense now. I remember watching "Battle of the Planets" when I was a young kid in the 70's. Because I was a fifteen in 86, I imagine I saw the 6 episodes that aired and because of memory association, I grasped upon the name "G-Force" as that cartoon I used to watch when I was a kid. I must have just assumed that the show was named G-Force back then as well. Sometimes I wonder if I lost a few things in my surgery when I was 10. Edit to add: I love your channel. I share videos from it all the time on various Facebook pages. I hope it helps increase your popularity!

I first saw G-Force when I was 11. My dad said it reminded him about how he liked Godzilla films when he was 11. Many years later, there was a re-release of "Battle Of The Planets" on DVD and I bought it. I hated it. If you thought DiC's translation of Sailor Moon was awful, it doesn't even compare to how bad Battle of The Planets butchered the original script.

Great video! They aired G-Force during the mid 90's in New Zealand on TV3, before school on weekdays. I loved the show. Years later in 2001, TV3 aired Eagle Riders at 5am on school days. I was chuffed when I found more G-Force on TV. On Sept 11 I woke up to watch the show, but was pissed to see a a live news broadcast had replaced the show. The World Trade Centre terrorist attack had just happened.

Have not been able to remember which show I saw as a kid for the longest time. Pretty sure I saw episodes of both at different points lol. But as soon as you said "Pee-Wee," it all came flooding back to me XD . G-Force was definitely the one I saw the most as a kid. I enjoyed it whenever I caught it, though it was never my favorite show. The time periods are interesting. I can see how in the 70s, it had to be pitched as, "It's like Star Wars, but..." but as a kid in the 90s, it always reminded me way more of "animated Power Rangers! (but not Voltron)," and I can see how that might've been the pitch requirement of the day.

Thanks for this. I had wondered what the heck brought about G-Force. It's a shame Tatsunoko doesn't seem to recognize that Battle of The Planets was really their foothold into the US market, and is worthy of a Blue Ray Remastered release. Don't get me wrong, I dig Gatchaman, but they're leaving money on the table by not pandering to the formative years nostalgia of me and people in my age group. We have jobs, a good many of us are at that point where if we can get the stuff we always wanted, we'll do it.

Tatsunoko simply might not want to happen to that series what happened with Robotech here in the west. What Harmony Gold did to that brand would send would make any Japanese producer scared witless. Some years ago (2010 I think), the powers that be finally did a live-action film in Japan. I've been trying to get it, no luck thus far.

Would you guys want to know more for a possible explanation of Sentai Filmworks and Section 23 films in future episodes? Cause that story alone would make an episode in just about any other web series. The short story is that Sentai and Section 23 are comprised of remnants of ADV Films, after ADV had to declare bankruptcy in 2008-2009. When ADV closed its doors, Sentai and Section 23 were able to quickly recover many of the assets ADV had. This would include Gatchaman, several other titles, and staffing. Much of what actually happened is a bit of an open secret to most long time anime/manga enthusiasts, so finding the rest of the story shouldn't be a great chore.

I remember G-Force. I'm from the UK so it's a bit of a different experience to most. I first encountered G-Force on a VHS tape purchased in my childhood. It included the first 3 episodes. It was a favourite as a kid but only 3 EPs. Some point in the 90s, the Sci Fi channel aired G Force so had more now. I remember my first encounter with BotP. I recall seeing another VHS labelled "Battle of the Plants" with the character I knew as Galactor on the cover. Playing it was like entering a parallel universe in which "Peewee" couldn't talk right and they had R2D2 helping them
