As others have said, "Based on a true story" doesn't mean any of these events happened, it's based on real people who made claims about demons and ghosts and the couple were "at best, tellers of meaningless ghost stories, and at worst, dangerous frauds." It's a very popular Hollywood thing to do, unless something is marketed as a documentary (and even then you still have to be careful because they've tried to tricky stuff with documentaries to stretch the truth).. you're gonna be working with works of fiction especially when it comes to anything supernatural.

If your ever in Harrisville, Rhode Island, the original conjuring farmhouse is still there. You can even spend the night there at your risk. Also, you can stop by the old cemetery and see the burial site of Bathsheba Thayer who actually died of old age, she didn't hang herself. That was for the movie. She was however tried for being a witch but they couldn't prove it.

It's one of the least known horror movies, but it's so incredibly well made and researched, and it was actually filmed on location (so no fake sets)! I highly recommend it, if you'd like to do another spooky film. :) It's pre-jump scare era, and the horror is very well crafted with a strong story. This has to be one of my favorite reactions! You were so much fun to watch! I'm a HUGE movie and paranormal buff. I've been to see the Warrens' on several occasions as they are from Connecticut where I am from. To put your mind at ease, a lot of this story is fabricated for Hollywood...although the haunting part is real. The oldest daughter has written a trilogy about the family's experience. It's called House of Darkness, House of Light. Fun fact: The real Lorraine Warren makes a cameo in the second lecture scene. She is one of the first audience members shown.

When you turn off the light after going to bed, take a look at the darkest corner of the room or into the dark outside the bedroom door and you'll feel the prickling of the skin when you realise that something in that darkness might be there, looking at you every time you go to bed and sleep. Even skeptics will "feel" that cold shiver down their spines. ;) ps. you should have a pillow/cushion to hug or press your face against when you're terrified by jump scare scenes etc. On another note: You'd like horror movies a lot more if you watched the less scary ones which excludes most movies based on hauntings. There are exceptions though where the story is less about jump scares and evil attacks and more about drama and thriller elements. One example would be the 9 episode show The Haunting of Bly Manor which is focusing more on the characters and the "horror" is more creepy than scary while also telling a sad story. I think this one, The Conjuring, was a bit too much for a horror movie novice. ;)

As a horror movie/genre enthusiast, I have always categorized this movie in the top 3 scariest movies of all-time (The Exorcist, Hereditary and The Conjuring). James Wan (director) is an absolute genius in his filmmaking techniques. For someone like you, who says they hate horror movies, you were very brave getting through this one. :) But, if you do want to move on, the Conjuring 2 is also just as fantastic a film. Also also, you should check out Insidious which was also produced by James Wan and stars Patrick Wilson. Typically, it is also in the top 10 of all-time scariest movies.

To be fair, producers can say "based on a true story" when it comes to any media so long as it has some loose relation to something real. In this case, Ed and Lorain were real investigators and they did investigate a doll that Lorain's step son still keeps in their roadside museum. There was a pretty funny episode of Buzzfeed Unsolved about it.
@tiamarrow6366 Жыл бұрын
The story of what happened to the Perron family was in fact real. The reason for why some parts of the movie weren’t true to what actually happen to the real family is because when Andrea herself gave the producers her book, which detailed what exactly happened to her family in that house….the producers turned it down because it was too scary to put in the movie, even for an R rated movie, so they had to substitute some things, That’s probably why they added pictures of the real family in the ending credits so that people knew that there was a real Perron family, and they did truly go through so much in that house.

I'd like to relieve your fears right now. The movie is only VERY LOOSELY based on the book. Bathsheba is not the real culprit. A woman who missed her dead husband hanged herself when she was in her 90s. That dead woman haunted the mom especially, because she was coveting her husband. She was jealous of the mom. She also coveted the children. They all made it out alive. Watch the oldest daughter speak about the whole thing that happened, her name is Andrea Perron. She wrote 3 books containing all the ghostly activity and what really happened.

I know this is a Conjuring reaction and not a Annabelle one, but I need to say this. I understand that whomever owns Raggedy Ann probably wouldn't allow them to use the doll even if they wanted to, but I think the doll would have been scarier if they kept it a red headed cloth doll a REAL little girl had. I'd even be okay with porcelain. Whatever parent bought their kid the scary horror filled design that Annabelle was in this film and spinoff DESERVES to have demons haunting them.

The real story was way worse than the movie shows seeing how James Wan wanted to tone things down to get a PG 13 rating but as you can tell it didn't work also the real life mother was never posessed only attacked by two evil spirits in that place. By the way the Warrens are a real life couple and they have a museum in their home as well. The Warrens barely had anything to do with the family that asked them for help because they apparently only made things worse by accident so they left. If you want the real story check out the eldest daughter's book House of light and house of dark that tells the true horrors they went through in that house. Bat Shiva didn't hang herself that was the worst ghost did named miss agetha who hung herself in the barn and she was actually the one doing the most damage. Annabelle by the way is a Raggedy Ann doll in real life and her story is more complexed than what they showed. This is my favorits of all the other 6 movies and to me is also the scariest too.

Why is it rated R.... The MPAA sometimes makes odd decisions with films that border a rating. They are a subjective board that have documentaries written about their unfairness. What probably pushed this film over the edge, was the last 20 minutes and the fact that it deals very heavy with religion. (exorcism) If it wasn't religious in nature and just boo scary I think it would have kept the PG-13 rating.

I highly recommend watching "This Film is Not Yet Rated" (if you can find it, I don't know that it's streaming anywhere) if you haven't seen it- it's a great doc about the antics of the MPAA and their arbitrary rulings on ratings and content. Lots of interviews with filmmakers about how they were told to make changes in their films for certain ratings. I think we need to get rid of them altogether, at this point I feel people are knowledgeable enough to decide if a film is for them or not, or if it's appropriate for kids. Let films carry the same designations as tv shows do (like when they just say it has violence or nudity) instead if parents really need that information. It's a shame in this day and age that the film industry is hamstrung by that ratings system.

@@ScientificallyStupid Great documentary, and the best part *comic wise) for me, was when they sent it in a film blasting the MPAA, to be rated by the MPAA.

@@OGBReacts I know you have a hard time with scary movies as you said. And I give you straight up props for starting with a scary movie like the conjuring. I am a huge horror buff and The Conjuring scared the living hell out of me in theaters. Could I recommend a movie to you? It's horror/crime/mystery! You might have already seen it. But it is called Sinister. It's actually very good and very creative. Not your average ghost story. I think you'd like it. It might scare you a few times but that's part of the fun! I would love to see that reaction.
