Networking doesn't help.... I've been kicked while I'm down and keep getting kicked... This industry has absolutely broken me.... Trying to find a job they want an entire team of ppl in one person and most jobs aren't even advertised it's word of mouth... I work hard, I'm passionate and I love 3D... But the constant let down and difficulty to find work is slowly killing me.... Having contract work and NDAs means I have almost nothing to show on my portfolio... Hey Simone, I'm so sorry to hear about your struggle. It's heartbreaking hearing people's stories of how the industry has broken them. It's so brutal sometimes, especially to people who work on contract or freelance. The NDAs are also such a problem because how are animators supposed to get work if they can't showcase work they've done in the past ?? It does sometimes feel like companies don't see creatives and animators as people trying to make a living, but just as machines there to produce work and then get discarded. I'm really sorry that you've gone through all this.

It's different if we're talking just about salaries though, because that's totally about what companies are willing to pay you and a lot of companies still try to lowball animators. No everyone wants to or is able to supplement their main income or fulltime job with other creative ways of making extra money as that requires extra time that some people may not have. I mean, most of the time, you expect your salary to cover you without having to find other creative ways of making money. But I do agree with you and that's the beauty of animation, there are a lot of ways of making extra money.

Animation as a career is not for everyone. People have different priorities and are willing to sacrifice different things for their careers or passions. A lot of people are fully aware of these cons about the animation industry, and are willing to put up with them to be an animator. Other people aren't. Just like some people would be willing to put up with the cons of being a video director, or an actor, or a doctor, to pursue those careers, while others wouldn't. If someone feels like this video convinces them that they don't want to be an animator, rather they find out sooner than later rather than wasting their time building a career they end up hating.

I'm a film animator with 20 years experience animating on blockbusters like Guardians of the galaxy and Jurassic world. Film has collapsed due to the retarded lockdowns, the writers strikes and the streaming medium beating out cinemas. I cannot get a gig in the games indstry because they always ask for specifically game animation experience, which is ridiculous as animation is animation. Sure there's a little bit of game engine integration know how required but that's just another part of the pipeline every aniamtor has to learn when onboarding with a company, and it's usually a few simple steps of exporting anim, importing into engine and testing. The animation might have a few minor contraints like faster action clips to maximise user response but that is zero problem for a film animator. Game companies are really missing out on fanastically talented animators through ignorance and tunnel vision.

The blood in your eyes tells me more than all explaining on how much you've been working late. Also this might be an interesting question is: Are there employees in the industry that do not crunch? I've heard that riggers have it easier than the other slaves of the industry. (This feels like that moment in Zombieland when they still have hope that there are no Z-s in Philadelphia or Sacramento or...)
@RobynO_O3 жыл бұрын
Well, there are some studios that are very careful not to have that crunch time and make sure that projects are strictly managed and kept within scope. I'm not sure if there is any specific role within the industry though that never ever has crunch time, as each role works to a deadline. But I also imagine that the people closest to the final deadline/ release date are possibly the people who crunch the most, so by reason maybe the people who are right at the beginning, like concept artists or storyboard artists, might not have as intense of a time? I'm really not sure though.

There's something else at work in the animation industry more sinister than any percieved 'sexism', it's VFX company culture. It has become insufferably woke and left wing. If you're an animator who speaks the truth about the world and has a grasp of reality, science, logic and critical thinking, then making yourself heard on politically contentious issues could lead to getting 'let go'. Conservatives are discriminated against in the VFX industry and it has a chilling effect on the company work environment where everyone is walking on eggshells to not make an edgy joke and get called to HR's office. I even know of a guy who was openly conservative on social media, not even at work, and the supervisors did not like him over that, one day a fellow girl animator befriended him and they shared lots of messages at work, getting on like a house on fire, one day he shared an edgy, slightly lewd joke with her and she ran straight to HR and he was fired a week later after a fake 'enquiry'. It was obvious that she was part of a setup, and it goes to show that true discrimination in the industry is political.

Sexism is not a thing in the industry. I've worked as an animator for 15 years and never seen it, and I've worked with many female animators. I was slappd on the ass one day at a work drinks in a pub one day. I took it as intended, just friendly but if the genders were reversed it'd be a trip to HR. Women are not discriminated against hiring wise, in fact often they get preferential treatment as companies seek to create a more equal distribution.

Boomer say what?
@RobynO_O3 жыл бұрын
I think it's a bit disingenuous to say that it's just not a thing in the industry. At all. That's just obviously false. Maybe you feel like you never saw anything you would class as sexism happening in front of you, but also why do you think it never happened behind closed doors, or just..you know....not in front of you? You couldn't be everywhere at all times, and why do you think you would hear about every case that happened? Plenty of women just keep it to themselves when it happens because they're worried about it being dismissed - or worse, having it affect their career or being labelled as "difficult" . So in those cases, you wouldn't know about it. And the worst cases will almost always happen when other people are not around because the perpetrator waits for that moment because they obviously don't want to be caught or called out. So maybe consider the possibility that although you may feel like you never witnessed it personally, you're not omniscient. You can't just dismiss the fact that so many women have experienced it.

I agree. Sexism isn’t a thing in the industry. We are planning to make a video on our channel “christian car rides” on whether women in the animation industry have it harder than men, spoiler alert, they don’t lol I worked as a Whamen in the industry (in America) for over ten years and I found women just loved to complain and treat Everything as some sort of plight against them. The industry is cruel to everyone, equally. If you are talented, hard working, and genuinely great to work with, you will succeed. There are plenty of women in the industry in higher-up positions. I personally found that working with men was 100% better than working with women (not all but a majority of them). The men were always super chill, kind, polite, and eager to teach. I never felt excluded as a woman when I worked with men. The women not so much unless you were in their “victim-hood” club. The women who tend to go into the animation industry are a certain “breed” who are more often than not, super libby, super screechy, and super feminist. Think “blue-hair”. It reminds me of that bill burr joke about modern feminism. Classic 😂 And to call someone a boomer is pretty sad and pathetic. A lot of the older gen created the shows that inspired our generation and why we love animation. There is no respect for the people that came before us. Fudge you who said that!

I feel i shouldn't even engage because this feels like deliberate trolling. Entitlement and privilege? I think you didn't watch the video, or are the actual entitled and privileged one, because anyone in the industry has seen and most likely experience the terrible long hours and exploitation of people who are a part of a production team or post production team that often comes from having to make up for poor management decisions. Most of all those who are new to the industry that get taken advantage of ,getting thrown into the deep end while being over worked and under paid , if paid at all, while still learning to navigate the industry, and adapt to whatever workflow and software the company expects them to use. I would say it comes from a place of extreme privilege that you haven't experience or even know people who have been taken advantage of in the industry most of all locally. Just the fact you dismiss these experiences speaks to the level of privilege you have, you're practically pathological!
