I appreciate granny squares as a novice crocheter because they're versatile and nicely delineated. You get lots of easy wins as opposed to larger patterns, and if you have to change plans, you don't have to lose weeks or months of work. Let's say I had big ideas for a holiday sweater, but later realized there's no way I'll be done in time... after I've already made half the pattern. Using a standard crochet pattern, I now have an awkward half a sweater. Using a granny square pattern, I now have a scarf.

My favorite thing about the granny square is I know I can finish one in a short amount of time. I can learn a new stitch or a new skill and complete something without having to commit to a whole project.

My first crochet project was a granny square blanket. This was in the eighties and over the years I was sorry to see it lose popularity. Now it’s back in style and I’m loving it !! Thank you for all this granny info 🥰

This is so interesting! Thank you for making this video. I only got into granny squares very recently (been crocheting on and off for many years but never tried GSs before) and your channel has already helped and inspired me a lot!

I'm a knitter who decided to try and learn to crochet as well. The granny square is the easiest thing for me to learn so far, and they are so fun with all the colors. I love that there are so many projects you can make with them. Which is good for me, since it is the only thing I have been able to perfect so far. Lol

I have a funny relationship to granny squares. I think I don’t really like them, but I’m always drawn to them. I was crocheting in the ‘70s so there’s certainly a nostalgic feeling for them. But then I also love the more modern ‘Square Scramble Sweater’ (on Ravelry) for instance. I do enjoy seeing how they’re re-envisioned every generation or so. They’re a simple yet infinitely adaptable motif. 🧶🦋

I absolutely loathe granny squares! I think it’s because I connect it with the horrible styles of the 60s and 70s. Plus, my own granny made me one of those gawdawful vests every year out of super cheap Red Heart acrylic. You know the one that every elementary kid wore on school picture day through the 70s, the one big continuous square for front and back with small squares over the shoulders. I am a crochet maniac and am never even tempted to use the traditional granny square. Thanks for all the history! ❤
