The Controversial Guru: George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff

" Gurdjieff himself has written one book, ALL AND EVERYTHING. It is a one-thousand-page book and absolutely unreadable. And he himself gives the recognition to the fact that it is unreadable. Only one hundred pages are cut and open; nine hundred pages are still joined and uncut! The book begins with a statement. The statement is, ‘you read first one hundred pages-it is the introduction. If you feel you can manage to understand what is being said, you can open the other pages. If you feel it is beyond you, you can return the book and take your money back.’ And how much money was he charging for that book in those days? One thousand dollars-because Gurdjieff and Ouspensky both believed that unless a person pays for something, he is not going to be deeply involved in it. When a person pays one thousand dollars, he has to read the book. And because there were nine hundred uncut pages, even people who could not understand the introduction were curious about what was inside the book; and they had already paid one thousand dollars, so it was better to cut it and see. But the book goes on becoming more and more difficult-difficult in the sense that Gurdjieff used to make words of his own. So first you cannot find their meaning in any dictionary. Those words have never existed in any language. He would mix three languages and make one word. And his words are so long that sometimes the whole sentence is one word. You cannot even pronounce it. His paragraphs are so long that one paragraph may take the whole page. By the time you come to the end of the paragraph, you have forgotten with what it had begun. Sometimes even lines run into whole pages. Gurdjieff had his own ways. And when he says you have to pay for everything, he means it in a very materialistic way. One countess was introduced to Gurdjieff by another of his rich followers, and the same evening Gurdjieff sent a message to the countess, ‘You give all your ornaments, diamonds, and money and everything, so that from tomorrow your teaching can start.’ She was worried, ‘What kind of teaching is this? Even if there is some fee I can pay, but all my diamonds and all my ornaments?’ She was very rich, and she had very valuable stones. She asked her friend, ‘What to do? What kind of man is this Gurdjieff? He wants everything, and then only tomorrow morning will the teaching begin.’ The other woman laughed; she said, ‘Don’t be worried. He also asked me for all. I gave all my ornaments, all my money, everything that I possessed, and next day, when the teaching started, the first thing he did was he returned all the money, the whole bag. So you need not be worried.’ So the countess collected all her diamonds and ornaments and money in a bag, and sent them to Gurdjieff. The next morning she was waiting, that before the teaching starts… but the bag never came back. She was very much puzzled-he has taken everything, she is now a pauper. She asked her friend, ‘You were saying that he returned yours.’ She said, ‘That is absolutely true. You can see, all my things are with me. I am also amazed about what has happened. Perhaps he forgot or something, that’s why he has not returned them.’ Those things were never returned, and when the woman asked, ‘I had given them because of my friend’s assurance that they will be returned tomorrow morning, but three days have passed. The teaching has started, but I cannot concentrate on the teaching; my whole mind is thinking about my money and my diamonds and my ornaments, because that was all that I had.’ Gurdjieff said, ‘The first woman’s things were returned because she offered them with love and trust. Yours will not be returned because you offered them with the idea that they will be returned-and first you made sure of it by asking your friend. You have not given out of trust and love. This is your first teaching, that if you are going to be with me, you will have to trust. And nothing is free." "

Na, I read the book and it is readable for sure, it just have some invented words to explain concepts, some of them in a different way as we usually understand them, and some of those words relate to original and specific philosophic or hermetic concepts, which meaning is expalined also in the book and the context or paragraph in which a particular of those rare constructed words are used . And do not exagerate, the lines do not ocuppy whole pages or have super long paragraphs, no. The book only needs time and focus, but it is completely readable and nicely written. You said : "Only one hundred pages are cut and open; nine hundred pages are still joined and uncut! The book begins with a statement. If you have been in the ambit of a real teacher, you'll immediately recognize even by inference that Gurdjieff was the real deal. Ouspensky's "In Search of the Miraclous" has some of the best stuff there is for those who want to actually get deeper into themselves. There's a lot there that might not be very accessible (especially the cosmology stuff), but everything regarding consciousness/unconsciousness, we being fully mechanical and non-existent as we are, lack of real volition, etc., are absolutely beautifully stated in this book, and with a depth that is not at all common to most spirituality going around these days. It's no wonder he was such a big influence on Osho. EDIT: nice video btw

A video about John Lennon would be interesting, he went to india and learned trancendental meditation, he and his band the beatles brought this movement to the west. John Lennon found the ancient sollfeggio frequencys that had been used in singing bowls he beliefed these frequencys could be sounds that would effect people help the to evolve and find deep inner peace. He even made the song imagine in this tuning. But he was killed after he tried to make this public knowledge. Today studys about sollffegio frequencys show they can increase oxytocin and lower cortisol levels so they do effect us. Osho has spoken respectfully about many Ascend Master but I noticed that when he spoke about George gurdjieff he respect him so much and I can sense his love for George Gurdjieff, to the point that I have not found any criticism on Gurdjieff. For now, all I know about Gurdjieff is throughout Osho and Osho explain the time when his disciple Ouspenskii missed it. Gurdjieff called Ouspenskii to be in a certain place (country) at certain time and Ouspenskii was trying to postpone because he got important meetings and things to do, but Gurdjieff didn't accept those excuses and demand from him to show up, so finally Ouspenskii arrived and let him know but Gurdjieff acted as if he didn't know anything, " Ohh I don't remember to asked you to come, and definitely is nothing important otherwise I will remember" After that incident Ouspenskii stood away from his Master He never understood that it was another one of Gurdjieff's teachings and methods.

Everyone is a guru in their own right, likelihood is 90% of people you meet are ahead of you in some way, and it's important to observe, appreciate, acknowledge and learn from that part of them. Otherwise you deny yourself the help you need🤷‍♂️

good effort. but you make many broad strokes in this video that are innacurate. for example, G never claimed to have created the enneagram, it was taken ready made from schools he studied with. schools such as the Sarmoung Brotherhood.

@@yoeyyoey8937 The word master and teacher have subtle nuances. If a teacher is a soldier then a master is a warrior. It is a nuance of societal establishments that Osho hated, and he refused to use words such as school and teacher, being the rebellious master he was. Regarding having our own standards such as finding a master who can bow down to a pupil, the truth isn't so simple. We should be wary of our own limitations. Our ideas are imaginary at best regarding what a teacher or master should be. It is not our knowledge regarding how a master should or shouldn't be but a deep thirst of finding an objective solution that brings us close magically to people who can help us advance on this journey. That deep thirst, on the Gurdjieffian way at least, is cultivated by generating understanding. Practically that means contemplating ideas such as I suggested above, that we should doubt our own rigid notions about what a master should be like, and contemplate whether it would not be better to make sincere attempts to understand ourselves instead of trying to logically figure out which master is legit and which not.
