The Sixth Sense is a masterpiece of modern American cinema. Few movies since its release have even approached it in my opinion. It is my favorite modern movie. I never saw the end coming nor did anyone else in the theater. Even my husband who is always annoyingly trying to guess endings was shocked. Love everything about this movie. I truly miss the effortless acting style of Bruce Willis who is one of my favorite actors. Haley Joel was amazing and I believe it was one of Toni Collette's best roles. Her acting is always pitch perfect, understated. That scene in the car--superb. I could watch this movie a thousand times and still not tire of it. The Sixth Sense is definitely my favorite of M. Knight Shyamalans' movies followed by Unbreakable, also with Bruce Willis. Both are great movies but I feel sad about the fact that Bruce Willis is afflicted with aphasia, a type of Alzheimers like disease that has ended such a great acting career and must be a painful tragedy for his family. I will certainly miss him when he's gone, thinking about what more he could have done further in his lifetime.

I saw an announcement he was retiring over two years ago, but they keep putting out new movies with him in them. So it doesn't seem he's very retired at all. Still, it's got to be harsh finding that you are almost incapable of doing the one thing you really like. I love music, I have 50+ gigs on my iTunes library; but now I'm suffering from tinnitus. I hear a constant loud buzzing in both ears; degeneration of the nerves in the ears. Scary to think that eventually I won't be able to listen to music at all.

I greatly respect this film. IMO, the director never again reached this achievement. It's interesting how almost all viewers the first time do not figure out the trick ending until it is forced on them. Years ago, I brought this film to an after-dinner movie get together. Our hosts had not seen the film, so were unaware of its story or twisted ending. The wife knew there was some trick to the story, and toward the end, she said that she "didn't get it". I told her that I'd give her a hint: that the kid sees dead people. Her husband did get it fairly quickly after that, and he kept egging her on. She still didn't get it and was totally surprised by the ending.

I especially loved this movie, but didn't realize it was his first! M Night Shyamalan is truly gifted and has an amazing mind to be able to come up with the story...but most of all to find such a talented and gifted actor in Haley Joel Osment to play the child's part was serendipitous, for sure. I truly loved Bruce Willis as the child psychologist; his tender concern and compassion for Cole was palpable, at least by myself, through the screen to the viewer. All in all, this was the height of my 1999 film going experience! Another film I can watch over & over, is "Signs", that Shyamalan produced in 2002! I appreciated all of the aspects of this great film, and how he ties the elements together at the end to complete the plot and resolve the conflicts that arose during telling of the story. I think M. I wrote a short story called “The Twist Ending.” I think I wrote it? You can’t be-shore sometimes. I am pretty sure I did. Any way it’s about a writer who has would be horror writers share their stories and he uses one of the writers who sent him their work and he used them as his own. The young writer was not aware of this until he had used all his stories. The young writer then wrote him he was going to send him a new story with a twist ending and to see if the big writer can figure it out. So the pro writer took the challenge and he-was reading and he thought he could guess the twist ending. When he got to the ending and he found a few pages stuck together , he puked them apart and read what was written on them. They basically tells him the pages were stuck together with a strong poison. That he will, pass from in about five minutes. There is no antidote for it. He will never use anyone’s work again. I have it copywraterted just in case. .

The cameo in this movie was possibly to emulate what was started by Alfred Hitchcock as early as 1927. English film director Alfred Hitchcock made cameo appearances in 40 of his films. They began during the production of The Lodger in 1927: A Story of the London Fog when an actor failed to show up, and the director filled in for him. Do you know if it worked for this movie? You can make up your own mind as to that. 🙂

My wife and I watched it together. At the end I was like, "Wait a minute. Is he dead?" My wife just laughed and said, "You didn't see that coming?"

Haley's technique for the 'real tears' section is actually a standard acting method.

I remember reading, in TV Guide, back when Rin Tin Tin was first running, that Lee Aaker did that when he had to cry on camera. That's who I was reminded of as I read the comments above.

Haley Joel Osment auditioned for Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars The Phantom Menace. Having seen The Sixth Sense before I saw The Phantom Menace, it was really hard watching it and comparing how I thought Haley would have elevated the role compared to the cuter but less gifted child actor that got it.

M. Night Shyamalan's "penchant for plot twists" is mentioned. Isn't this the only one ? No disrespect to him, as he did great, but this one movie gave him an aura or legendary status. The "surprise endings" is not seen in any other movie of his.

I picked up on the color red right away. Also I picked up other hints, Willis’ clothes was one of them. Believe it or not, I pretty much had it figured out that “Bruce Willis” was dead by the way people reacted to him. I am a person that looks at details. BUT, one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. I LOVED IT and have watched it several times.

I noticed that when she was eating with him in the restaurant, the table was only set for one person (her) even though he was sitting across the table from her.

What if then the line, "I see dead people," was a line he threw in as a covert cry for help because psychology he either believed he did see dead people or he was simply crying out for psychological help with his own fears?
