In the late nineties when online shopping started it was a jackpot. One only needed the card details an one could start shopping. Back then one wasn't asked to give account address details when placing an order. I knew one woman from france who would rent a room in london and go online with card details and order thousands of pounds worth of goids and sit there for as week as the deliveries arrived then she moved to another place. Another guy i knew tild me a credit card arrived at his flat along with a pin number next day. He spent the lot and never heard anything about it.

A lot has changed now. For one thing it doesn't take weeks for transactions to post to your account it's instantaneous. There's advanced anti-fraud algorithms that can pick up most strange behaviour and deny it outright right away. Oh and merchants that accept stolen cards? They get to eat the costs now. Delicious!

Todays hot card lists are instantly uploaded to the system. Back in the day one could d travel by rail all over Europe by rail on dodgy cards. If you bought a ticket on the train the ticket inspector had no way of telling if the catd was hot or not.

There must be some benefit to the banks here. 30 years on and you can still clone cards with the same machine onto the same cards. They wouldn’t be loosing all that money if it wasn’t in their favour to have an excuse to print more to cover the loss and have more in circulation for them to ultimately get into their portfolios

He was good was Roger Cook. We could do with someone doing something similar today. On this subject, I got a call at my home in Surrey, asking if I had just bought a TV in Manchester an hour earlier? I said no, and how could I since it was 200 miles away and I still physically had the card. After an argument, the bank refunded me. It turned out to be a local petrol station attendant at my local Esso who stole my info. Similar people had been up to similar tricks at a local restaurant. Banks will always try to push the loss onto the victim.
