The Corliss Tunnel was a much needed connection for the western neighborhoods and suburbs of Pittsburgh when it was built in 1914. Disputes of the length of time the easements for the privately owned traction companies that owned the streetcar or trolley lines delayed the construction for over ten years. Over 100 years later it is still a valuable connection.

What amazes me is that these were built without very much power equipment except for the steam shovel and they got it done relatively quickly, faster than we can do it today. Whenever I see some of today's project schedules I remind people that WW2 lasted four years for the Americans and the Empire State Building was built in less than two years. With all of today's technology and power equipment they can't do that. I might add that it is still in use 100 years later, says something about how well it was built. The Brooklyn Bridge in NYC is nearly 150 years old and still strong while the Tappan Zee Bridge barely lasted fifty years.

Very nice. Even my Aunt and Uncle's house is in the movie. They owned the Esso Station at Tabor and Carson Street. Anna and Al Bealles.

Great video. I have to wonder why they made it a tunnel, when maybe the initial cut they did would have worked as well....

Got anything about the railroad that is now the busway? That would cut behind comcast, fergeson plumbing .. We use to cut school in the tunnel before it was a bus tunnel .. it was really creepy but cool ..

Nothing on the tunnel itself, though maybe the newspaper archives has some info on building it, etc. Just the pictures of the area in front of Langley (the picture in the video) and an old picture and a video of the bridge in Ingram (you can see a train crossing under the bridge in the video.)

@@TimeTravelWithTim cool. was such a wondrous time when I was a teenager. the tunnel had some fencing but people always used it as it wasnt actually dangerous .. just dark and icy in the winter, the ice would light it up some. I have never been on a bus thru it otherwise the only time in the tunnel as a teenager. I should give the bus a ride tho.. Thanks for your time, love the videos ...

Really great video Tim. Just sad more pittsburghers dont support this channel or care about the history of where they live. Localism is a thing of the past.

I don't understand why they didn't just build a road once they dug it out? Why build a tunnel & rebury? Would have saved money. Could have widened it in later years. Love your vids, not sure why TBH.

I think it had to do with the railroads above it and the bridges/trestles that would have needed to be built.
