Vintage photos of Windgap Ave. between Ingram, Pa and McKees Rocks including the McKees Rocks Bridge. Includes pictures of the Pittsburgh Railways trolley car barn in Ingram in 1924, the old Windgap School, the (now gone) Mann's Hotel, and more!
Update: It appears that the buildings I discuss at 9:10 could very well be housing for returning WWII veterans and not defense housing.

I remember the old Windgap Bridge. When I was 8 or 9 years old the motor blew up in my Dad's Buick on the bridge on his way home from work. We were supposed to go to Wildwood NJ that week . I guess it was a good thing it happened there and not somewhere on the Turnpike in the mountains.

My maternal Grandma, was Jim Corney Mann's brother, her name was Alice Mann. We where also related to the Bryans. One of the Bryans actually qaurried behind the hotel. this was one of the main causes of its structural failures, causing it to lean. I ran around the old Mann Hotel, most of my childhood. My maternal Grandfather , Matt Harbison, and Alice used to frequent for a shot or two and to visit Uncle Jim. I could go on and on of the memories. Thanks

Through my life , I have been around this area for many years . My Brother and I used to climb on and underneath the old Wind gap bridge . I remember chickens always running around inside Corny Mann's Hotel/Bar . There were bee's in a white box right on top of the wall on Corny Manns property . I do remember the back wall of this place being really bad because when we were playing around that area , you could hear people inside as though they were standing outside ! I also remember Hollywood Music just getting started in a 1 car garage right next to Corny Mann's . so many memories watching this video . Thank You Tim!

I just came across this video and I lived on Windgap Rd. and grew up there. Thank you, as this brought back many memories of walking on that bridge to Mckees Rocks to go to church and to shop as we didn't have a car back then.

Tim, my dad used to tell two stories about the old Windgap Bridge. The first was that his father (my grandfather) hand-poured the molten steel used to make the railings on the bridge. The second story was he and his brothers and friends used to climb to the top of the bridge and walk across. He used to say my uncle Jack was crazy because he walked across the side that didn’t have a sidewalk…as if that would really matter much if they fell off!

Pretty wild! Our people did a LOT of infrastructure building around here, apparently. Your Uncle Anton (Tata) Grgurich (Barbara Podnar Grgurich) helped build the Stowe Tunnel and the Corliss Tunnel.

You did a great job in this presentation. I give you much thanks. I even enjoyed the authentic accent, which I hear very little of. Ironically I was out taking pictures today and I heard a Pittsburgher behind me. I did not call her out on it. Again, very enjoyable video.

I was in the Mann Hotel in the late 1970's and was surprised at how nice it looked. Would have never guessed.

The Mann Hotel looked like it was getting ready to fall over the hill for years. Too bad nobody ever shored up that hillside before it was too late, probably no money available for such a massive project.

My father renovated the old Sully farm and had the electric, sewer lines placed and paved Summerdale Street, Haven Street and all those acres. His plan for nice homes after the war but depression came and no one buying. The government leased all those lands and erected barracks for returning. Vets. Look up attorney, Arthur C. Christiansen. Will be glad to show you his plans and brochures for the property. Kristen Christiansen

Hi Kristen, I'd never heard about that plan before! Very interesting. I have a couple of pictures of the farm that was there and the family (One of them places it well because you can see Hollywood Cemetery way up on the hill.) Someday I'd love to see your father's plans and brochures. Maybe we could do a video of the area? Years before that there was a resort kind of thing on Chartiers Creek. I liked seeing the hotel there as we pass by daily. I was hoping they would try to maintain and repair it because it WAS historical. Alas, it didnt survive .
