The 86 was lauded as a “car that trains the driver” the entire show, implying that it’s not like other platforms where you can just ram your head against a proverbial wall until it gives in and does what you want (or explodes), the 86 is more stubborn than you are so you simply have to learn how to drive it, and once you get through dealing with such a fussy, difficult platform you become an insane weapon in almost any other car. They even brushed on this in the later seasons with takumi trying to race the times he set in his dad’s WRX STi, which he himself said felt impossible because of how well-equipped the car was.

A controlled rear wheel slide is a drift and yes touge is about drift unless you have a car with enough downforce to take those turns at high speeds while keeping straight

The AE86 is a sh*tbox. The only car worse in Initial D was the AE85. That was the whole point of the series. Takumi's whole character arc was to realize that 86 is a sh*tbox and that there are tons of better cars out there and no amount of 10k RPM racing engines can fix that.

I'm not completely disagreeing, but consider that the only similarly old car that raced against 86 was Ryosuke's FC and he had to tune it DOWN to give Takumi's 86 a fighting chance. They're good for touge, because of the lightweight and small amounts of power, making it perfect for touge. And for the reasons I've listed up above, the underpowered AE86 isn't a good drift car to start with, Unlike the AU Falcon and the VT Commodore, as they've got a good amount of weight on them, along with an Engine that makes about 210HP from factory.

Honestly I'd fuckin daily one for the rest of my life if I could. It's the best car I ever had the pleasure to drive, twitchy, fussy, stuborn as all fuck, and absolutely a blast and the most fun banger of a car. It's punishing to drive it seriously down a mountain pass or on a track, and if you don't do what's needed it will just act like a mule. But when everything is right and you're in the weird place where sound is oddly muted and everything seems just that slight bit of hazy as if reality was made of neon yet somehow everything before you is crisp it is a car that will reward you and that will enjoy the moment with you. And I realize this reads as if I'm completely high and insane, but it legitimately is that way.

People have missed the last bit that alex said, where he said that because of its low hp and twitchy handling for it's short wheelbase and solid rear axle, it punishes you for cornering too early and not commiting to your drifts so if you COULD drift it, it kinda signified that you could actually drift well

The AE86 is mechanically just a Foxbody Mustang at 3/4 scale. Strut front, link-axle rear, FR boxy hatch. Only reason they don't mow down crowds is the 4A-GE hates making power.

With current Corolla prices a Miata will do everything the Toyota can but is a better platform overall. It’s not as old school cool but it’s another car that trains the driver and it’s hard to drift even if you have a lot of hp, short wheel basis are great for racing but drifting is easier in a long car.

Initial D did not lie to us. You're forgeting that the 86 in the anime was upgraded the entire series. It did have the stock 4AG 4 cylinder in it but there was a shit toj of stuff done to it in order to turn the car into what it was. Bro did not watch initial d, the show praised the car for being stuff of legend for being one of the best cars of its time and being a drift icon but at the same time showed how times change and beat on the car for being slow, old, and outclassed in comparison to the newer rx7s and gtr’s of the time, the show wasn’t to make 86 seem like this all around drift machine, it was to say that racing isn’t entirely about the car; it’s about the driver, that if you put a pro racer in a shitbox and a Streetpunk in an r32, the pro is probably gonna win most of the time cause he knows what he’s doing and how to handle every aspect of the car and track, to show people that you can still have fun and win races with your tuned economy car if you’re not doing so financially well at that time as long as you’re willing to learn how to properly drive, also another reason I think they were praised is cause they were slow so if you’re touge drifting you don’t have to manage your speed as much cause your full throttle was all you needed around corners
