Waldent Clinical Shade Guide comprises individual pre-fabricated color standards that mimic the color of dental structures used to visually determine a color match with natural teeth. It is based on dividing the color into three components:
• Hue: This is for color tone - red, yellow, blue
• Chroma: Saturation or purity of the color
• Value: Degree of lightness or darkness of an object
The arrangement of the shades in the Waldent classical family of shades is as follows: -
• A1 - A4 (reddish-brownish)
• B1 - B4 (reddish-yellowish)
• C1 - C4 (greyish shades)
• D2 - D4 (reddish-grey)
Within these shades, either A, B, C, or D, the shades are classified by a number from the lightest, 1, to the darkest and most intense, 4. The wide range of shades allows the operator to easily find tooth colour in one of the ranges.
STEP-BY-STEP PROPER SHADE SELECTION PROCESS
- Rearrange the shade guide according to the value as the human eye is most sensitive to it.
- Ask the patient to remove any lipstick or distracting loud makeup to minimize the contrast effect.
- Make sure the teeth are clean, if not then do a quick prophylaxis to clean the facial surface.
- Raise the dental chair to your eye level and stand 10-14 inches away from the patient’s face
- Don’t use the dental chair light for tooth selection rather use indirect sunlight or natural light from the window.
- Place the shade guide in front of the patient’s teeth in an edge-to-edge alignment with natural teeth and squint your eyes for more accurate perception
- Select two shades quickly that are closest in value.
- Do not stare and make a decision in 5 seconds
- Now rest your eyes by looking at a neutral color like grey, as this will make your eye more sensitive to color again and that’s why your shade guide is of grey color
- Now make a decision between the two shades within 5 seconds
- If you think that the tooth is polychromatic with different shades then record this in a shade map for proper communication to the lab technician
- Lastly, in spite of having such a wide range, the recorded teeth might have some slight differences due to eating habits such as betelnut chewing, smoking, etc so always try to match with the adjusted tooth properly.
