The tip about syncing the snare up on the 2 and 4 while already playing the bass was very helpful. Thanks!

Hey Friends... well, these new videos sure have caused some people to get quite angry with me and I'm not really sure why... My entire career, I've played and taught this song the way I explain it. Recently I saw a Transcription on Drumeo, and I really trust their transcribers as they are great! The Transcription by Sahand Kahksar is just great!! Please don't think I'm taking anything away from your current knowledge, and even if the current live drummer plays with Quarter notes on the kick, that's great, but challenge yourself to the way I show it from the Transcription I trust. Thank you all for your continued support! Happy Drumming Everyone!

Such a great feel on that track. It feels like a Jeff Porcaro feel.

And Michale Jackson's, "The Way You Make Me Feel" is quite similar to this, if not identical.

Great lesson Mike. You should hv played the groove for a bit again at the end of the video. Just a suggestion.

You are correct, but keep in mind the recoding was done with a LinnDrum, so there never was a real drummer playing this on the album.

Sounds great. The actual recording is a sample or drum machine. You make it sound authentic. Well done you.

Great video. I actually learned this beat not by listening to Tears for Fears but by listening to drummer Scott Rockenfield on The Whisper by Queensryche. His kick drum is not as busy throughout the entire song but he does throw in some variations.

Covering this in the 80's, I would have fun and get creative, mess with the groove. Fortunately, had a great bass player.

Thanks, Mike. Now, can you please come down to San Jose and play that for me at our next live gig? I hate not playing it live as it should be but that quarter note triplet is a killer.

The bass drum/snare is the same as "Revolution" by The Beatles.

Very tricky beat! For a second, I felt like a beginner, but I got it fast. You learn something new all the time. You have to isolate stuff. Thanks for a great lesson.

Dark crisp hihat

I play 16 notes with a swing on the hihat with both wrists then left hand on snare 2+4 I'm also playing this way to make up for the shaker that is over dubbed in the recording

To my knowledge, Manny Elias played this deceptively tricky drum beat on the track. Lovely groove.The drum fills are a challenge too.

The original recording does not use real drums. It's programmed.

Good explanation. Never played this out live, but I did this one during Covid when I live-streamed my practice sessions on r/Redditsessions. The only difference I did was I played 8 note triplets on the hi hats and accented the offbeat like you play (I think there’s a shaker on the original track and I wanted to simulate that)

Exactly, and thats the pattern... Live they use a real drummer...
@PaulBarrieDrummerАй бұрын
Well, there's obviously many ways to play this groove and successfully support the song. You're groove sounds great, but if you carefully listen to the original track, the programmed kick is definitely playing quarter notes. The shuffle comes from a bass synth or other sample that doesn't even resemble a kick drum sound. I would not have even commented had you not been so adamant about so many bad representations of this groove on line, and you're going to set the record straight. Bottom line, a programmed drum part might, and in this case does, yield many interpretations, including your own, which is valid, but not what I would play. Peace!

@barflyrocks4 ай бұрын
@@MikeMichalkow I should have clarified, there's a lot of space for grace notes, if you want to give it the same feel with the shakers on the original recording. This guy gives a good demo. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaPSZ4aJhcipp5osi=ZLQK38m60rp-OuLS&t=620 It doesn't mean your way is wrong, but yes there's space for some ghost notes in there if you want to add a little.
