My mother used to sing this to my sister and me as a lullaby some seventy-four years ago, sounds as lovely as ever. My father was stationed in Wick for a time during the war, hence the song. Truly beautiful

Behind the beautiful harmonies, a poignantly sad song. I wonder if there's a story behind the lyrics. I wouldn't have minded having Paddie Bell lullaby me to sleep.

This one's been hidden on a compilation album called Folk Favourites since the mid-60s. Aileen Aroon's on the same disc. Well worth tracking down if you have a record player.

@MegaArchitect1 Certainly a poignant song of loss. I've always thought it might be a mother's way of rationalizing the death of a child, but the "fairy" explanation fits better. Apologies for the loooong delay in response. (I couldn't access my KZbin a/c.) Tom B.
