"Mairi’s Wedding" (also known as Marie's Wedding, the Lewis Bridal Song,") is a Scottish folk song originally written in Gaelic by John Roderick Bannerman (1865-1938) for Mary C. MacNiven (1905-1997). Step we gaily, on we go Heel for heel and toe for toe Arm in arm and row on row All for Marie's wedding Step we gaily, on we go Heel for heel and toe for toe Arm in arm and row on row All for Marie's wedding Over hillways up and down Myrtle green and bracken brown Past the shielings through the town All for sake of Marie Step we gaily, on we go Heel for heel and toe for toe Arm in arm and row on row All for Marie's wedding Red her cheeks as rowans are Bright her eyes as any star Fairest of them all by far Is our darling Marie Step we gaily, on we go Heel for heel and toe for toe Arm in arm and row on row All for Marie's wedding Step we gaily, on we go Heel for heel and toe for toe Arm in arm and row on row All for Marie's wedding Oh plenty herring, plenty meal Plenty peat to fill her creel Plenty bonny bairns as well That's the toast for Marie Step we gaily, on we go Heel for heel and toe for toe Arm in arm and row on row All for Marie's wedding

Regardless of how it's supposed to be pronounced most singers either don't know gaidhlig or don't want to confuse their listeners, so Mhairi end up being pronounced Mary

My wee sister, Mairi, uncle Eric used to sing it to her, and a version to my big sis Elise, of the leaves seem to whisper Louise, he'd change it to Elise, I got a bit chagrined at being left out but managed to find one for me!

This song reminds me of a very beautiful friend of mine named Mairi from the Isle of Lewis and I play it whenever I want to be reminded of her. And of course her name is pronounced correctly here.

I own that accent, at least I own the Aberdonion one given to me as a child....It has, and still serves me well in all the weird countries I found myself in as an aircraft engineer.

@ithotofthisfirst Poor girl is saying her own name wrong :( - it would be said "Varee" under that spelling. It's nothing to do with personal preference unfortunately, it's about her parents being wrong ;)

My dream? To have a lap dance done to this!...whilst playing a [ winning ] game of bingo...while ......tucking into a plateful of cheese and pickle - Branstons,obviously! - while... drowning in a pool of tea(the last sighting of me would be my small finger curling inwards - the way REAL Morningsiders and Kelvinsiders do do).
@detolerandisstultorum5 жыл бұрын
Roddy Mc Neil's rendering of it, is the best. The Corries sing it way to slow and take too much care at the pronunciation. This is a folk song, they sing it like a ballad.
