I was in the pub business for over 30 years and recently managed to sell up. Since Covid I have lost between 300-500,000. I always had 13 handpulls on the bar and was good at my game but the Tories have killed it. Latterly it was embarrassing to be charging over £5 for some beers and it is criminal that pubs like mine (one of which has been there since 1150) will disappear forever for the sake of the clowns that have been 'running' the country for the last 13 years. Sad beyond belief.

I work in the hospitality business sector and I totally understand how you feel Chris. You guys have worked so hard building this brewery and restaurant business. I hope you can find a way to hold on!. Seam's like the government doesn't care about the little guy. I only buy beer from small local craft breweries. Everyone needs to understand what small businesses are going through. Cheers!

Out of those breweries, George Wright ceased trading a long time ago but legal action prevented the kit being sold off, it must be sorted as I saw the auction of their old equipment about a month ago. Prospect went in June 2022. Didn't know Mouselow Farm Brewery had gone, I think I once met the owner. Good news is Beer Nouveau (Manchester) was closing but yesterday it was announced someone has bought the business. Real shame about Dark Star and Beatnik as they made decent beer. I had not heard of a lot of the other breweries but I guess they sold within a certain radius of their premises. Tax on beer kept rising but the price at the pump didn't rise at the same rate so someone was out of pocket.

Really enjoy watching the videos Harry. Mainly because they're so real and representative of the UK brewing industry. I think a lot of people think craft beer in the UK is Verdant, Deya and Beak etc with their Cyberdyne industries SSV brewkits, but the vast majority of breweries are like our own (Dave Porter 6BBL here ha). Trade for us has been atrocious these last 2 months so i think we're going to have to make some horrific staff cuts. I'm not particularly looking forward to my new life of being a brewer 5 days a week and barman during the nights...But needs must.

How depressing. Made me quite emotional. It's tragic for all those breweries to close of course but there's some real shocks there. Jennings, Dark Star and Old Dairy! I hope you are able the press on through these troubled times and I shall indeed, despite brewing myself at home, continue to support the quality independent breweries over Christmas and the new year.

That's a big hike heck 😮. I always fancied starting a micro brewery not sure about the pub up front that's next level. £5 for a pint isn't unreasonable though I pay often £6 equipment here in Australia for a good craft beer sometimes more. The govt tax and increase to power are hurting small brewers. Here in Oz many micros and mid size brewers are from wineries where they gave room for another shed or they use the existing tanks and pumps after wine making. Makes it easier to keep costs down i guess. Bottling and canning has saved many micros especially with covid. I wonder if the small Brewer next to the tap house pub in swadlincote is still going?

Chris, have you considered hard seltzer? It is cheaper to make, might give you enough margin to help tide Harrison's over. I'm sure you could come up with your own unique spin on it...such a long list of ceased breweries...absolutely don't want yours added to the list.

As the title of this video implies, the economic problems Harry faces are essentially a manifestation of political problems. Specifically, expecting sufficient numbers of people to pay more money to a "beloved local business" is generally unrealistic. Sure, you might be willing to spend more money to support small, local businesses which typically have higher prices, but most people generally won't. Ask the average person: when you buy your clothes and groceries do you focus on "buying local" or "saving money?" For most people the response is almost certainly "saving money." Perhaps for you it's "buying local."

I am guilty of not going to pubs any more. The main reason is the price of a pint. I'm not paying £5 a pint and that's final. So I brew my own, 40 pints at a time, and it works out at 60p a pint [HMG gets no tax from me] The original equipment cost was about a tenner and a 40 pint beer kit can be as cheap as £12 [Geordie or Youngs] up to £30 for a Courage Directors Bitter Plus you can add more hops, use mollasses instead of sugar or just use less water for a stronger brew. Get brewing, you'll not miss going to a pub ever again.
@tomdennis1972 жыл бұрын
If the only reason to go to the pub was for cheap beer, then pubs wouldn’t exist at all. Having brewed my own beer on and off for years, nothing can replicate a well kept beer, in a great pub, with great mates. You simply don’t get that feeling drinking at home, whatever the cost benefits may be.

When you buy a beer in The Brew Shed you are buying into an experience. You are buying an atmosphere, warmth and a beautiful surrounding. If we don't support our pubs we will lose them. Just look at Doncaster Airport nobody thought that it would lose down but here we are with no local midland airport any more. I will for one be in as often as I can and I will pop in for a beer whenever passing even though I live near Doncaster. Franco x

I started brewing mostly from kits to save money as a student then I started doing recipe brews for beers I couldn't easily access cheaply it readily. I don't do full mash anymore i just don't have time but i do kits with additions or malt with grains in the bag. The money i save as kits and malt are still affordable allows money to go to a proper pub to socialise and support community
