Arrows.... X10's are just insane in their cost. If you end up breaking them both you and your bank account will break down and weep uncontrollably

It's true, but it doesn't necessarily have to be x10. Easton's Avancé are cheaper and just as good. And in terms of price it is being exaggerated because it is using the most expensive equipment as references. It is not necessary to spend thousands to have good Archery equipment.

As a beginner practising for a lil' over 3 years, I've spent probably around £1400-£1600 on my gear. Still using the same Kinetic Invinso riser, but it's the limbs and arrows that have been the ones that cost a lot of money, on top of other miscellaneous purchases.

Great vid. Very informative. I spent about USD $500 on mi first kit. In Mexico (where I live) that's a lot of money to shell out and I didn't have to spend it all the same month. Perhaps people curious about archery would benefit from a video explaining what equipment you buy as you progress. For me, I started with club equipment and only had to buy a hat, finger tab, and arm guard to begin. Used a show lace as a sling (still do). Two months later, I got a dozen very good/cheap arrows (Tiger archery) and chest guard. Two months after that, I bought my "bare" bow (riser and limbs only) and used a club sight and single stabilizer. It was six months after shooting my first arrow that I finally completed my kit with a stabilizer set. A year later, I got my second dozen arrows (easton avance sport).

My setup is/was a Winners Motive FX riser with the fitting C5 limbs, all around probably $400-$450. As I was using it for barebow, a Spigarelli plunger and arrowrest, together around $100. Arrows are Victory VAP. The shafts are between $9-$15 per shaft, depending if the are Elie or Sport shafts. Running regular boning vanes and Victory tips and nocks these cost are maybe $1-$3 per arrow. So a set of 12, would run around $100-$170. With a cheap stabilizer set and sight you could turn it into an olympic setup. Cost would probably be$300-$500 for stabilizers and sight. That setup will get you easily through your first tourneys and you can upgrade it piece by piece if you think it it will help. Unless you are trying get to the olympics or the world cup, the VAP or similar arrows will be enough for your career as an tournament archer. The barreled shafts like the X10 are really just for those with either too much money or shooting in the top percentage. If you want to get all out, then you add tungsten tips to your X10 for another $10-$15 per arrow. :) In the end the best equipment does not make you a good archer if your technique is bad.
@Alan_Edwards
@Alan_Edwards Ай бұрын
I agree on the arrows. Speaking from the compound side of things, I have spent $300 a dozen just for the shafts to get .001 arrows and half that on some .003 and it does not amount to much of a difference except to your bank account. I just got into recurve recently and picked up some Pandarus Alpha X arrows that are .003 and paid a very decent price for them. Not saying having .001 arrows is not better, but it's very very small incremental improvements that only top archers may benefit from.

My journey with competitive shooting and its costs as a late teen / young adult: -> (free) at 17 years old in 2008, had a brief period with "wooden bows" from the school club's inventory, going quickly from 22lbs to start up to 32lbs limbs within about 4 months. In that time, there were already a couple of novice level school tournaments and I brought home a few golds and silvers. My team and I decided we could move into the intermediate category within our first year, and so -> ($400 - 700) I got myself a NX Xpert W&W riser (i think it was a 2007 model) second hand from a senior archer from a rival school, and borrowed some spare 36lbs samick limbs from a senior at my own club. Also borrowed donated hand-me-down stabilisers, plunger, and clicker to put it all together. Bought my first set of arrows - Easton plats. We took home several medals in that first year, individually and as a team, though the competitiveness was a steep jump going from novice to intermediate. -> (~$3000 - 4000) moving into the open category towards the start of our second year in school it became clear that we needed to bump our equipment up, because we (mainly me and two team mates) were pretty close to top level senior varsity and national shooters, but not quite consistently ranking in the top 5 yet. So I got my first real set up brand new - the W&W APECS and the N-APECS Carbon limbs, with the HMC Plus stabs, and a Arcosport plunger (though my teammate and friend donated this to me), alongside my first dozen Easton ACEs. Fucking phenomenal bow - I could swear the arrows seemed to autocorrect mid-flight because of the APECS' unique front damper. This was really when my competitive streak took off (along side shooting roughly 300 - 500 arrows a day at school, up from 300 - 400 arrows twice a week). In the next 2 years I would bring home close to 30 medals from ranking, iko and tko events. -> all throughout this, I remember feeling really sad that I couldn't afford a second identical set up because that was a condition for the national team. Though I kept ranking in the top 3 at most events, this was a real limiting factor as a sportsman. My parents had to stretch to help me with my set up, and my friends did what they could to fill in any gaps so I could focus on shooting well. -> (~$3000 - 4000) moving into the army (conscription), I made a little bit of money, and so decided to follow in my team mates' footsteps and get the Hoyt HPX and F7 carbon set up, with carbon blade stabs. Man, these were the days of experimental design in archery for sure. I do regret going with the formula system in retrospect, but it sure looked cool then! I spent the next 3 - 4 years (including university after my service) bringing home another 20+ medals, mainly restrained due to the army. -> (potentially $4000) moving into adult life, i left shooting behind for almost a decade, and find myself stumbling back into this world of shooting again. Now I can finally, probably, afford two identical bows, but sorely miss the strength and stamina and form of my younger years. I do want some of these new bows though, like the latest FXD and AXIA or the ATF-DX and MTX. If I can find myself ranking within the top 10 locally again, perhaps that's what i'll buy next. So, that's, potentially, $15 - 16k all in all (including some arrows and other accessories along the way that I didn't quite account for above), from 2008 - 2024.

Used to shoot Olympic trap competitively. While I probably only had about $2500 into my shotgun plus another $500 for a custom stock, most who shoot on the higher end have shotguns from Beretta and Perazzi that are $6000+. But what sends competitive clay target shooting events of all kinds soaring past archery in no time at all is the cost of ammo, which adds up quickly and can cost several thousands of dollars per year.

Great topic. I just bought my first recurve bow after shooting compound for over 20 years. The only component I spent significant money on was the riser at a little over $500. Since I am just stating out, I bought some budget 26# limbs for $120 so I can upgrade as my form improves and I get stronger. I expect to pay around $300-$500 for my final set of limbs at some point. The rest of the equipment was more budget friendly. If I continue to shoot and compete, which is my plan, I will probably upgrade other equipment too at some point. So my total investment as of today is around $1200 and that includes everything needed except a quiver, which I have, and a clicker which I will get later. Well worth it too me as I am retired and have the time and desire to learn a new archery discipline !!

My main Olympic Recurve is a W&W Inno CXT, NS-G limbs, Shibuya Ultima RC sight and W&W ACS-15 Rods. Adding all the other bits and pieces, accessories, carry bag, spotting scope and tripod, probably looking at a total around 5000 AUD. I definitely don’t need all of that. The ACS-15 rods were definitely a vanity purchase as their colour scheme matched the riser. I don’t go to competitions, but I do use it for weekly club shoots. I also love how it shoots and enjoy shooting it even if I’m the only person on the range, so in that sense it’s money well spent. By contrast my kheshig, field quiver, arrows and thumb ring come in under 1000 AUD. I love the simplicity of it and the way that it feels. I also have a Xongkoro and although it shares the same quiver it needs its own arrows for min gpp requirements but also would come in at a total cost to shoot under 1000 AUD. I agree that if you just want to have fun in archery, you definitely do not need an Olympic Recurve. Even if you want to shoot an Olympic Recurve, you don’t need to spend what I spent. My first Olympic recurve setup was only 1200 AUD and would still be perfectly acceptable today. But the setup I have today makes me want to shoot it every weekend. I bring all three bows to the club every Sunday and usually succeed in shooting all of them.

This video shows the prices for an Olympic setup... But for a starter or amateur the total price would be more below 1000€. Both my sons started five years ago with a decent starter set for about 500€ each. One set of higher pound limbs around 140€, a couple of strings, some 30 arrows for 5 to 6€ each, two quivers for 20€ each and finally a nicer sight for the youngest son. And that is about it. The oldest son stopped archery as he went to university and a girl friend and so on but the youngest is still shooting in the club and local tournaments. I have taken the bow off the oldest son and all now shooting in the club, no tournament yet as my skull should be improved more.😅

i have played and still play many sports, often to a decent level, and there's one thing that's common to them all, and that's people believe that by buying 'the best' it will make them better - it doesn't. for instance i have regularly seen guys at my golf club spending say £300 on a new driver, and a year later they are still the same level. I always say that if they spend the money on lessons they will get a much better return, but few do. when i raced bikes, some would buy the latest carbon whatever at crazy prices, but still go no faster than i did. Archery is exactly the same, and ive heard the saying 'you can't buy points' many times, so true. personally i bought a shibuya sight when i started for what seemed then like crazy money to me, but after using a cheap one that kept rattling loose i got sick of it and reasoned that a good one would last forever and be a joy to use, and that's indeed the case 12 years later, but has it made me a better shooter? - probably not. while im a great believer in something bought cheap is something bought twice, you have to be realistic, and if you can easily afford to spend thousands, well, go for it, it's your money and may be one less thing to blame when you ain't shooting like kim woojin, but for most of us, it's far better to manage your expectations, so don't be the guy with all the gear and no idea !!, and outscoring someone with your more wallet friendly rig gives you more satisfaction, coz these days the differences between top and lower end gear are hardly noticable to most of us anyway. GL and thanks for the vids.

I've been shooting for about 15 years and have gone through a few bows. My current set up is around €3500-3700. The riser , limbs and sight I am using I have had for about 8 years , and many of the other components for at least 3 years. Even my arrows are 2 years old now as carbon arrows can sometimes just keep going and going. If you divide the costs of things over the time and uses they get olympic bows can work out cheaper than a lot of other sports. If you bought football boots and used them the same amount as I shoot this bow you would need a new pair every year at a minimum, maybe even 2 pairs a year and they can cost well over a hundred euro a pair. If you buy comparably high-end boots to my high end bow, those could be €200 to be gone by the next season. I on the other hand expect my aluminium riser to outlive *me* let alone a competition season.

Lancaster Archery Supplies advertised US Olympic archer Casey Kaufhold's equipment (Casey's father owns Lancaster). I totaled it up: $4,700USD or $7,100 Australian dollars. That is assuming she one had one set of arrow and one bow. But to be fair, she probably got that at wholesale. I shoot World Archery barebow and my equipment including arrows comes to about $2,000USD or $3,000 Australian dollars. But, as Nu Sensei points out, most of that lasts a lifetime. But also put that into context. If I was an advanced amateur photographer, I could spend a lot more. Naturally, the benefit of photography is you can shoot people legally, unlike archery...

Unfortunately another reason i never got into serious competition. Archery can be very expensive, but then can also be cheap. For a casual archer like myself im not spending over 300£ for a bow. However i am thinking about getting a good bow but in parts, like you mentioned theres some very good pre loved equipment out there. I would go for a riser first then limbs then what ever i personly want. For me less is more, im very much a minimalist person and like traditional bows, and dont require a sight. Plunger would be a good idea, basically the basics but basics that will do the job for me. At 54 i very much doubt ill have time to get to Olympic level anyway. For me its a fun hobbie. My brother is a golfer and i would say he spent well over 1000 on a full set of clubs, and bag. My son is a pro fishermen and that sport is like archery in the fact you dont need to spend alot, but you are loosing in quility if you dont. I used to play cricket and that to can be expensive if youre going all out i.e helmet, shin elbow guards, gloves and glasses, tinted glasses are actually pretty important in cricket. So i wouldnt say archery is the most expensive sport. Unless you go full pro Olympics then walking in with a black hunter you would probably get some looks, but surely the guy with the black hunter could outshoot a guy with the most expensive win&win set up. I noticed you had sanlida, apparently they do very good "budget bows" alot of hunters use the Hermet X10 or the other x10 range. And your talking under 200 for a good recurve bow. And they do pretty cheap ilf set ups. So i dont know, sometimes i feel like with golf its your peirs who will intise you into getting the expensive gear because they have it. I would be very interested to see two guys with both the same skill gap, but using different priced gear to see how much this realy does matter.

Nowhere near that figure. Just a basic starter recurve set from Core Archery which costs roughly 300 euro (riser, limbs, bag, string, bowstand, stringer and 4 arrows). Add some additional basic arrows (12 for 50 euro) and some small stuff like quiver, tab, armprotector, spare string, spare nocks, damper, and better button for an additional 150-200 euro. Total is somewhere around the 550 euro. The same riser and limbs are also used at the club by various of the competition archers. With this barebow set I manage to average around the 240-250 points (10*3 arrows at 18 meter on a 60 cm target) which isn't to bad for someone who started just a year ago.

I just added up how much I've spent on all my bow & shooting gear. $5.5KAUD, I don't shoot X10's and don't have the top level Uukha limbs. 😂 I'm a big guy with a long draw & shoot a 74" bow which in turn means I can't buy any old thing off the shelf or only a few different options from more expensive brands are available. I bought a chest guard from Artebo as other brands didn't fit and that very expensive compared to other brands.

Am I being conservative? AU$5500 is about US$3600, so if you add in X10s and top tier limbs, that would be around US$4500 = AU$6800. I priced-matched the common competitive equipment on Lancaster - knowing that most archers didn't necessarily use the most expensive recent models and accessories, but even cutting some corners brings up around US$4500.

I think NuSensei covered it too. The gear is good, just a bad marketing strategy.

Sponsorship give a lot to pro archers for the marketing I find funny those expensive kits that can get you nowhere near the gold at 40 yards and the large amount of kit snobs out there a lot of bullshyte

Very interesting. And indeed, quite a sum of money. So I'm just going to stick to traditional archery. A lot easier, and for me personally, a lot more fun. Will check if I can see an Olympic archery game on tv.

Welp, $2000 spent for my setup, not including arrows but I think it's the money well spent and worth all the way because I know I will stick with the sport for a long time. P/S: most of them are used equipment but high-end ones

In a simple conversion, considering import taxes, the full kit from the video (1 bow, 12 arrows) would cost over 2 years of mininum wage for a brazilian ~US$3,5k = R$19,6k + 96% taxes = R$38,4k BR Minimum wage = R$1,4k x 24 = R$33,6k (obs: 60% of the population lives in minimum wage according to the 2023' census) So it's really a miracle for an athlete like Marcus to rise to the top of the world in this context

No connection of any sort, but I have been into watches for 10 years before starting archery in 2023. When you can pick truly a very high end full kit for around $3000, believe me, it is affordable. Since there is almost zero maintenance after purchase and it is unlikely a common thug would steal your bow. $ 3000 in watches is not even entry point in luxury pieces.

700 usd is cheap ? i'd call swimming is a cheap sport, or table tennis but not archery i personnaly have a WNS riser, kinetic maple-3K carbon limbs (each 225€), stabilisations, button and arrow-rest from Arc System (180€) and a bag with accessories (100€), 2 arrows sets (100€) well 900€ many people can't afford this just for fun...

It would be a shame if you couldn't get the job done with an AUD 1000 bow... Bugger paying the same amount for 12 arrows! 🙄

Sadly archery in this particular discipline is viewed as an elitist sport, in which price is no object for those willing to pay for wining, or rather keeping the “ regular archers “ out. Secondly, the politics in archery has gotten so bad, that many have left the sport, and just resort to either doing something else or just make it their own personal hobby.
