I’m visiting your channel based on Megan’s suggestion in her IG story, and i have been amazed by the differences in teacher compensation around the world. So amazed that I’m about ready to move. I’m also a FL teacher; I live on the Panhandle. We are always in the top 5 districts in the state based on test scores, but we are in the bottom five in pay. It’s so demoralizing. I have 10 years of experience and two master’s degrees, and I only break $40K because of my yearbook adviser stipend. I have a second job at a craft store and a third job teaching night school for our district. Unbelievable. I’m 39 and working my life away but can’t afford a reasonable vacation with my kids. Maddening. Anyway, wanted to chime in as a fellow victim of the FLDOE!!

It is definitely amazing to see the differences in teacher compensation around the world and even within the same state. I can see how it is absolutely discouraging to be working in the top 5 districts in the state with the highest FSA scores but be among the lowest districts in pay. With regards with finding enough money to go on a decent family vacation, I can definitely relate. And my heart goes out to you for everything you are doing for your family to help make ends meet, like having to take on three jobs. Wow! How can we go to school and obtain the amount of education and preparation we have and still not be able to live comfortably? Consider California and don't be scared of housing costs. Check reciprocity. Salaries are generally very high throughout the state. Cali is a big state and it isn't just LA and Frisco. I started at 45,000 a year 19 years ago and now make 88,000 plus extra money teaching credit recovery. My district pays 50 dollars an hour for trainings outside the school day and summer school pays insanely well.

I'm a teacher in France... My first year teaching I earned 18 000€ (≈20 500$). Now, 10 years later, I'm earning close to 24 000$. As far as I know (the state is working on changing our salaries, not in our favor), in 10 years I'll be at 28 000$. I feel like no matter where, teachers don't earn as much as they should... But I can't help but feel that, here in France, it's worse than in a lot of places! Thanks for all your videos, I really enjoy watching them!

This was really inspiring to me. I’m a senior in high school and I’ve never been interested in nursing, law, psychology, etc. like my parents and friends have. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, mostly because I know the effects that a bad teacher has on a student. This video was realistic and super informative!!

You lose your job if you protest ??!!! I can’t believe it! What about freedoms in the good ole USA? 🇺🇸 What does your union do about this? My heart goes out to you. You deserve so much more pay. Is your union state-wide? I hope you get to keep it - it is sooo important that teachers are represented. Thank you so much Emma Jane! I do want to clarify that we can speak up and protest but what we can’t do is walk out and go on strike. If we do, our Union gets de-certified and we risk losing our job. The unions in Florida are by county, not statewide. And the state recently passed legislation that de-certifies unions that have less than 50% membership. We don’t want to start to think what it would mean if we lose our union. If we do, many teachers have already started saying that they will leave the teaching profession. It’s very scary! Our union is trying to make sure people are aware of the implications of losing our union so they can become members. I am holding on to faith and hope that all will work out in the end.

Love your videos! I live in NY and a new teacher with a bachelors get 56,711 (no prior experience) and this is from 2018-19. I am an aspiring teacher (need two more semesters before I graduate). I always knew teachers are underpaid, but I didn't knew to what extreme. And to think that, even though new teachers here in NY start pretty "good" comparing to other states, life here is pretty expensive so in the end, it is like getting 40k or less. I, however, wouldn't change this profession. I simply love it no matter what!

I absolutely agree! I love my profession and wouldn’t change it. You are absolutely right! Even though it seems NY teachers get paid more, the cost of living is higher so it’s like you were getting paid lower. Keep at it and I wish you the best. Just remember, we never go into teaching for the money or fame. There are other factors that outweigh those but it would be nice if we would get compensated better than we are now. This was interesting to watch, I can relate a lot to you! I’m originally from South FL and graduated from FIU in Elementary education. I moved 2 yrs ago to nc. The pay is similar in NC where I live now but the cost of living is lower. The rent in south Florida is insane.

Thanks for supporting RedforEd. I live in AZ, a right to work state, and we did walk out for six days but kept our jobs. My wish for US certified teachers is that tax payers will realize teachers are worth as much or more than those in the US Congress therefore, we all receive a six-digit salary. Wishful thinking! I feel for you with your salary after 17 years in 45-50k range. My starting salary in PA was 49k. However, I’m sure that the cost of life up here is so much more. I rent and live paycheck to paycheck. I truly wish teachers made just a bit more money to live comfortably. We’re not looking to get rich but live comfortably.. oh I also wanted to mention you get a lot more toward supplies than we do. That’s def a perk! We get 100.00 at beginning of year, that’s it! Where in south Florida do you work? I just vacationed near Naples. It’s beautiful down there!

Hi there! 😀 First, I just want to thank you for this video. I live in the Southwest Florida area (Arcadia to be exact) and we start off at a lower salary ($39,000) for first year teachers. We received our first salary increase in 5 years. I will more than likely start out at a higher salary due to my years of experience with my district along with having my Master's degree. I should be signing my contract in July. You will do great on your dissertation and become Dr. Sanchez. With God, all things are possible! 😀

I can’t get over your salary schedule. I’m a teacher in Tn with a Masters, 15 years experience and make about $51,500 before any stipends or extended contracts. With summer school and tutoring that Will add $4700 to my salary before taxes. Hope you guys can get your salaries up.

Since I uploaded this video our salary schedules have increased after our county voted for a referendum that added additional funds to teacher salaries. We do have a summer school option but I personally choose to not teach during the summer. Regardless, it’s really interesting to see how much teacher salaries different from state to state and even county to county. Wishing you all the best!

I am a 4th grade teacher in Massachusetts with 15 years experience and 2 masters degrees. I make $116,000 a year. Ive been thinking about moving to Florida and teaching there. After watching this video (and a few others) there is no way I can teach in Florida. You should consider moving to Massachusetts. You would be making $120,000/year with a PhD.

As I mentioned, teachers in Florida cannot go on strike and yes, our unions are in danger of being decertified. All of these are laws that were passed in our state. What sets Florida apart from other right to work states is the strict consequences that it has actually placed in the state law. We are able to protest at school board meetings or when the Florida Congress is in session, but we can’t do so during working hours. Hi Laurel! Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. I so greatly appreciate it. Yes, we are not allowed to go on strike or stage a walk out. Florida is a right to work state and even though other states also fall under this law, what sets Florida apart is the strict consequences that we teachers will face if we do go on strike. It is actually against the law for us to do so. In New York with your years and education you would've been making $100k plus the option to become an AP or Principal. That makes no sense how low the pay is in Flordia and other states here in the US. We have all of these jails but can't teachers can't get good pay?! Smh very upsetting!

Wow! That’s quite unbelievable. We recently got a pay increase thanks to a referendum that the citizens of our county voted on. Although it is a nice increase, it is nowhere near 100k. It’s really interesting to see how teachers get compensated in different places of the world. It is quite upsetting.

That’s so true. I haven’t really considered moving to another state but I wouldn’t say it’s completely off the table for the future.

In the UK, teachers start on £22,917 ($30,406) then every other year it goes up in salary ( if you pass your targets (very controversial!!) )to £38,633 maximum. on upper level 3. that would take 16 years IF your head thought you had hit your targets (performance related pay!) If you change schools, there is no promise that your current level would stay on the same level. The only other way to earn extra is if you took on leadership or gained responsibility over certain areas eg senco. A bonus is that our earnings are pro rata' ed over the year so we get the same pay every month - even through the summer. Some of our teachers get paid for marking GCSE and A level exams during the summer to make extra money, but that starts now whist our teachers are still teaching a full time table. Our summer begins about 20th July. It seems the world over, teachers are just keeping their heads above water whilst paddling like mad underneath to survive. Good job we are all amazing and committed to such an important part of society's well-being. #lovemyjob

Thank you Kate and I want to clarify that we can protest at board meetings and at the state capitol but what we can’t do is walk out or go on strike. If we do, we lose our jobs and our union gets de-certified. Teachers have tried in the past to have a “sick-out” but the district sent emails and notices warning teachers that if they did that they could lose their jobs.

i know that this is old , but im really intrested in teaching but i have a question, I study in a Institute in Puerto Rico 1 year and im looking for teaching from pre k -12 but the most unversities have for undergraduate and im a graduate , any tips for me and also other people like me ? Thank you so much for your comment. I think your English is quite good and it’s always good to practice. With regards to teaching, you should definitely check with the school district you want to apply for to see what other requirements you may need to receive your teaching credentials since you already have a college degree. The requirements vary from district to district. As far as universities go, it depends where you want to study and what you plan to study. Wishing you all the best.

I work at a catholic school and not only do we loss our constitutional rights once we enter the doors(this was discussed by a lawyer at a conference we attended); we don't get unemployment and we are paid almost half the salary as public school teachers. Starting public school teacher get $36,000 while Catholic school teachers get anywhere from $18,000-20,000. No teacher ever reaches $40,000 in Catholic education. I know a colleague who has been teaching 25 years and she only makes $34,000. We have to teach almost all specials(expect gym and music), the additional subject of religion everyday and we get no resources or special education services.

As for safe affordable areas, I don’t know much but I think the more south you go, the cheaper it is like in areas such as South Miami and Kendall but I haven’t looked at prices there in a while. Though I must say i'm nervous now, i'm moving to the district right above you that starts with the letter B and right now I'm making 49k on the west coast Florida but will drop to 47k moving to east coast, though I'm currently enrolled in my specialist degree and will finish that next year which will boost my salary to 51k the following year.

Do you know about special need teacher assistant jobs in south Florida? I’m currently a Autism therapist doing ABA in a school as an aide. I live in newyork and am considering relocating to south Florida. I hear there is a shortage in RBT and autism teachers in Florida

This is awful. The cost of living in Florida is extremely high and for a teacher to have to live paycheck to paycheck is a huge insult to the profession. They should really bump the pay for teachers at least to over 50k just to start and give an extra 10k for a masters (otherwise what’s the point of a masters). There has to be a way to make a difference

Thanks for your comment and you’re right. I really should make an update to this video since it’s been a few years since I posted it. Things have changed slightly but it’s still expensive to live in South Florida and teacher salaries do still need to be higher to help teachers afford living expenses. Hello, I’m a recent graduate and I’m looking into teaching in Florida. I don’t have any teaching certification. This is where I’m confused, is it possible to enroll in the online teaching certification without having a job or do you need to get a teaching job to enroll yourself in an online certification course.

Hi there and congratulations on your graduation! With regards to teacher certification, you will need to check with the school district you are applying to so you can see their requirements. Sometimes teachers can start with a temporary teaching certificate. You can also get your certification before getting a job. You don’t need to have a teaching job in order to register for teacher certification as long as you have completed a teaching degree. I hope that makes sense. I wish you all the best!

Thank you so much for your comment. I encourage you to still check with the district you want to apply for a teacher job in. They will be able to properly guide you on any requirements you may need to teach with the undergraduate degree you currently have. I know of many out of field teachers who still got their teaching credentials but it often varies from district to district. I wish you all the best!

Thank you for enlightening us on teacher's life in other states. At least with a doctorate you will be able to move to a superintendent position. My district's superintendent makes $400000 yearly. Teachers? Not so much!😞

No. You don’t have to be a substitute teacher before becoming a teacher but most people do it as they work on finishing up courses for graduation. I never was a substitute teacher. I went straight into teaching after receiving my degree.

Wow, "Right to work" sounds more like "Right to get fired if you don't toe the party line." What is the use of being in a union if you can't strike?

We can have our unions but Florida’s right to work regulations are very strict and there are consequences for teachers who strike during work hours. If we do, not only do we risk losing our jobs but our union can get decertified. We can still protest but it has to be during non working hours.

I know I need to have 30 years of teaching before I can get my pension so I know that I either have to stay in the classroom until that time or work at a public university within Florida.
