David Hickenbottom I hate to hear that. I think solar energy is a great idea, but down here in Georgia, there is a push to only put solar panels on land unsuitable or too hilly for farming. The good news is that there are a lot of programs going on to conserve farmland in forward thinking ways.

Here in the UK there's a lot of what's called machinery rings where farmers rent other farmers machines and equipment for not a lot of money. Its usually ran from a central office where you can book what you need, it works really well..

Why rent? You could purchase your equipment and have a very likey position to sell for a breakeven or maybe even a profit. $7k-$8k is a lot of room to work with when buying and selling equipment. More risk is involved, but it is not a sunk rental cost.
