Its weird to me because if they want to make this a race issue, Africans in Africa still have slavery today in 2023, as well as many other horrors like FGM, child marriage, child labor, witchcraft, poor treatment of women and there are dozens of tribal, religious and ethnic conflicts and wars. The other thing is, The US and Europe already pays reparations. They have been doing it for decades. They pay billions every year to most African countries and most poor countries around the world. Many poor countries rely on western aid to survive and eat because most African countries dont produce enough food 80% of all infrastructure and investments in Africa come from the west. More than 50% of African hospitals are still run by western NGO's and church groups like the catholic church. The west funds most of the health programs for things like malaria, HIV, and vaccination programs. You can look up online how much poor countries get in western aid, and its billions every year.

Descendants of enslavers can be the most helpful by lobbying Congress to pay reparations instead of placing the debt of slavery on their own inheritances. Many economic efforts were made to lift poor working class whites out of poverty. Affirmative Action doubled household incomes of white families, which is 1 out of 1000's of policies and practices. Benign neglect (1960's) is a policy currently in effect that prohibits helping those whose ancestors were enslaved and used as currency. US Reparations for Slavery is about profit sharing. Millions of enslaved Americans built wealth that's controlled the globe 3 centuries+. Wealth created for US and European elites and governments (taxes). 1776 US/Europe banned ("to end slavery")bringing African POW labor into the colonies due to insurrections. 1808 termination date meant the 'domestic breeding' industry had 32 years to produce the next line of laborers. Girls as young as 8 were captured for that industry. Class-based reparations does not address crime against humanity. Repair is mandated. The US continues unfair treatment towards that American lineage. In order to get it to stop, protections are needed. Only monetary repair can change that. 4 quadrillion+ in labor cost was saved using enslaved labor. Imagine if those people were paid and those dollars were circulating amongst laborers. Maybe more than 1% of us would be sharing the wealth.
@Will_Moffett Жыл бұрын
@@anpdm1 The unfair treatment of the lineage is also expressed in hiring practices and in media. Most of the black actors that get put on in major productions are not from the enslaved lineage. The production companies seem to go to the ends of the earth to avoid ADOS (American Descendents of Slaves) and hire black people of other origins. Most of the slots at the Ivy League filled by black students are African nationals, not ADOS. It's almost as if there is an implicit agreement to target ADOS and deny them any opportunity whatsoever. It's not just a passive continual denial of the importance and fairness of inheritance for ADOS but some kind of active targeting and disdain.

For Nicke Haily to stand there like a deer in headlights about the question of slavery and the civil war tells you everything…. Their story and our story are 2 totally different thing’s….no one would want the evilness of what these people did to surface. I’m from the large number of immigrants who came to America long after slavery was abolished. In my opinion, those rich families who benefited from slavery should be the ones to pay reparations. Those of us who arrived poor (and continue to struggle) should not be funding reparations through our taxes. So take the land inherited by the descendants of slave owners and take the businesses developed on the backs of slaves and use that to pay reparations.

We also need to talk about reparations for soldiers' families who were drafted while rich men were allowed to buy "substitutes." Perhaps it would be most fitting if the descendants of people who actually benefitted in any financial or material way from the war to pay the reparations, rather than asking descendants of union soldiers who were drafted, while Rockefellers, Astors, VanDerBilts (Hi Anderson Cooper!) and others profited. I will be eagerly awaiting the reparations check for my ancestors' sufferings.

It’s a Nonissue issue that has no support in terms of public policy. The states have no power to implement any such policies as they don’t have the resources. There is no support for this on the national level. They are throwing proponents a bone in terms of commissions to examine this issue. Studying something is just that as this is not 2020. This is petering out and those few places that have actually passed such policy have been critiqued for the very limited funding and resources that have actually been paid. The high court struck down affirmative action in college admissions in 2023. The idea that this is going to become policy is a giant distraction that does nothing but to energize the right. If individual white people want to give property back to black people that’s an individual choice but that is different from a government policy of reparations. Any such effort would be challenged on numerous grounds not the least of which is that groups suffered under throughout this country’s history yet they are excluded from such reparations. If 5 people are in a car that is struck by an Amazon delivery truck under order to speed in order to deliver more packages then everyone who was harmed in the car is entitled to compensation with those who are most harmed getting the highest amount of compensation but almost everyone would likely get something. Reparations singles out one group for reparations despite slavery not being against the law when it was practiced. In short there are many reasons why neither the legislative branch, the president nor the courts will support this. It’s a giant distraction and waste of political capital.

Hmm. Of course slavery wasn't against the law originally, but that's because many enslavers and other ppl who benefitted from slavery wrote the laws. Similarly, the acts of 1940's Germany weren't against their own laws, but they were still genocide.
@drstevej2527 Жыл бұрын
@@cindys9491 Genocide is not slavery and said German laws violated existing protections for German citizens just as Internment camps violated the rights of Japanese Americans. This is why reparations for Japanese Americans is different from reparations for the decedents of slavery. That and the fact that the US is not paying reparations for the great grandchildren of the Japanese who were interred. These are important distinction under our legal framework. German judges were put on trial for knowingly violating German law in allowing for such policies not for the actual death camps and genocide. The courts were not consulted regarding the death camps. How old are you? Not one German judge ever heard a case involving actual practices of genocide. Apple meet orange as we don’t get to undermine one of the cornerstones of legal system simply because some people want to. It’s the same reason why you can’t be convicted of a crime nor fined for doing something that was not a crime when you did it. And FYI Germany is not in the USA the last time I checked. Their history and legal system are not our own. None of which has anything to do with the political reality of this issue. Reparations top the list of public policy that will never be law. It’s a great way to waste political capital. That is the point!

At the height of slavery 1.6% of the population owned slaves. The very idea, the demand that people alive today who had absolutely nothing to do with slavery take their hard earned money and give it to people who never experienced slavery is absolutely abhorrent. This is the rich and corporations passing off their debt to the poor and others who have zero responsibility for those acts. America inherited slavery from European countries and ended the practice within 1 generation. Seek your money, your reparations from the corporations that still exist today that benefited from slavery. Banks, insurance companies, all the Universities. Seek your reparations from the actual enslavers in Africa. In Europe. Citizens alive today have zero responsibility or guilt for those actions and owe nothing.

I am of mixed ancestry but since I look white, and a majority of my ancestors are from Europe, somehow that makes me culpable in how blacks in the past were treated in the United States? None of my white ancestors mistreated anyone and in fact some married people of color. My DNA test from 23and Me shows I am 64.9% European, 27.9% North American--meaning Native American, 3.5% West African, and 2.1% east Asian/north African--meaning Arab, plus 1.6% trace ancestry and unassigned. Bottom line, I am 100% human being who respects all other fellow humans! Ironic, what if I happen to be a descendant of slaves? I would not claim reparations for that though, but I could claim for being from a Native Californian tribe as my Native ancestors faced great discrimination. My point is a lot of groups of people were historically mistreated including the Chinese and even some white people like the Irish, who both built the railroads. But how could we pay for all of them. We can't.
