If you want to start racing, look up your closest track and see if they sell any karts there. I suggest you buying a used one at the beginning its totally enough to get started. By buying your kart from a nearby track, you can be sure to get support if you have any issues, also chances that they have parts to repair it are quite high. Hope that made sense to you guys. Cheers

They rent karts if you dont have your own so im going to do that and if it goes good then ill invest. Thanks for the info lad

Drizzydid Wow, I’m 18 and I thought I was late, I’m also trying to get started, but with a very low budget it is very hard. Still, how are you doing with the exploration, have you already find something interesting to start with at these late ages?

@@somerandombro9749 Hey man aha 18 wow good age um so I haven't started yet but from my research which has been a lot it seems Lo206 karts are the best and most budget friendly yet still competitive and exciting series to be in for individuals like us. So an Lo206 kart is probably the direction to go for us when time comes to buy a kart but at first doing rental karting to make sure you actually want to commit to buying a kart I heard is recommended as well. But yes to start with an Lo 206 4-stroke engine ala Briggs & Stratton engine is probably the ticket. Also with the Lo206 series the engines are "sealed" meaning that should you choose to race your competitors cannot tamper with/modify the engines to any extent that would give them an advantage over you from an engine power side of things so it's more "fair" to all budgets of racing providing a more level playing field where driver skill is way more important than engine. Chassis is probably the biggest performance factor outside of driver skill in Lo206 racing from what I gather and that difference can be notable but only moreso once you kind of heighten driver skill to a point where every tenth of a second actually matters and even then "lesser" chassis can still win with the right driver behind the wheel vs a less skilled driver in a "better" chassis. Does this answer your question/help a bit? If you've heard anything different throw it back at me again I'm just finding my way too.

Drizzydid wow dude, that actually helped me a lot, thanks for taking the time to help! And surely I will research about what you say, sounds like something very suitable for me. The only thing is that I will probably buy it in 2nd hand because of the budget. Also I’m going to do those rental tests, it was kind of the only thing I was certain about 😂. Anyway, thanks again and if I find something interesting I will make you know!!!

@@somerandombro9749 Sounds like a plan. Glad to give you some insight. Hope you get on very well with things. 2nd hand is definitely more than fine I've heard and even getting a kart only 1-3 years old with minimal use can slash the price of the exact same kart of whatever you're trying to get brand by as much as 30-50% so definitely as long as the frame isn't damaged or cracked and stuff (you'll have to inspect carefully) second hand is probably the move to make to be honest but definitely only buy second in person don't do it online because like I say from my understanding you really must inspect the frame because any small cracks or things that are bad with the frame = really really not good for you to purchase. Of course some scrapes of the frame paint and wear from contact with the road is to be expected but not like cracks and bends and serious dents!

Here in Australia you can get an Aussie made Arrow X5 complete chassis ( Less seat, engine and rubber, does come with magnesium rims) for $5200 an IAME X30 125 senior engine $3650. Tyre's cost $270 set of 4. A seat from $200 upwards if you buy direct from DPE the people who manufacture the chassis they will freight it free anywhere in Aussie Land. Once you have your gear don't forget running costs ( mostly tyres ) Track fees average $70-$80 per meeting, Suitable 2 stroke racing oil from $30-$40 per litre. All senior tyre cost the same no matter type or where you buy them $270/set if you run restricted classes you can get as many as 3 meetings from say Dunlop DFM's once you're competitive that would probably drop to 2 meetings from a set. In open classes however you'll get one race day to a set, you'll have the tyres from your last meeting to practice on one more time then bolt on a new set for the race day. Here we run on premium 98 octane unleaded petrol. I mix 10 litres for a meeting, if there is some left over it goes into practice. 22:1 mix. Annual club and license fees and engine rebuilding it all adds up BUT !!!! It's still the cheapest form of motor sport you can do in this country !

There are a few issues I have with this video, that potentially have major ramifications: 1 - The 2nd hand market is effectively completely ignored. You can get started in a decent chassis and engine combination for around the £1,000 mark, if that (class dependant). In addition, buying used engines is a good way to get started and then continue in the sport. 2 - Karting doesn't necessarily mean racing. I run a 2017 TonyKart with an OK engine (got an incredible deal) and only use it for testing. I go to the circuit with a couple of mates, we spend the day blatting round, then we go home. Perfect! If you're just testing the cost goes down massively; you're not going to be buying new tyres (I get mine, barely used, for around £10/set) and you can run the engines rich and a tad overgeared to increase engine life. You can also do this if you're racing, just don't expect to win if you're racing MSUK. 3 - The value of karting isn't explored. Once you drive a proper race kart (like the OK or an older ICA engine), sports cars will hold no desire for you at all. Karts are incredible just to drive, let alone race. The responses, the feel you get are unlike anything else. These figures that are being used are scaring people out trying to get into the sport I believe. Please explore the cheaper side of karting. There is still a barrier to entry, but it is nowhere near as large as it might appear to be. And once you're in, as long as you don't go crazy with spending money, it's relatively easy to stay (especially if you're just testing or don't mind not winning).

Great info Crispin! Thanks. If I may put forth a few questions if you don't mind: 1) What is your view of doing rental kart racing vs buying own kart? And if you advise rental karting before kart owning how long do you recommend one do rental karting before moving to owning a kart? 2) I figure from my research to this point that the best all around kart for balance between fun and decent enough speed for eventual racing in a category good for newcomers who want to grow a little bit but know they won't be going to really high categories is the Lo206 category of karts from my understanding...is that what you got and if so how much did a used Tony Kart save you compared to buying new? Ideally I understand that Lo206 kart engines are sealed to ensure level playing field and you don't want to tamper with them so I'm a bit confused with the engine part of what you mentioned in point 2. 3) How much per month does it cost you to maintain the kart if you had to say and is it a lot of maintenance/time out of your pocket to do it or does the local track mechanic help you tune/fix things up/do you have an arrangement of some sorts that you recommend? 4) Finally where do you store your kart/do the maintenance if you own a kart but can't bring it to where you live if you live in an apartment? Can you just leave it at the local track in a place where karts are stored usually? Thanks if you can help clarify any of this.
@crispinzuercher3796

@@Drizzydid Thanks :) 1 - So I did an awful lot of rental karting before I got into owner-driver stuff. I think it definitely helped prepare me for getting my own kart (especially the Club 100 stuff (arrive & drive 2 stroke). As to a recommendation, I really can't say. I would probably suggest doing a test day with a team to see how different it is compared to a rental kart, as the difference is unbelievable; in terms of the way you drive it, the feeling you get and the responses. I can see it being too much for some people; would be very easy to become overwhelmed, so I would recommend trying it out before getting your own. 2 - I have a Senior OK engine (Vortex DDS), which is the sort of engine you'd find at world, european championships etc. Unfortunately I don't know anything about the LO206 (Briggs and Stratton engine?) as I don't think it's run in the UK. If you're looking to go down the two-stroke route, probably a Rotax engine is best for a newcomer; they're very reliable and you can go a reasonably long time between rebuilds (not as good as a 4 stroke though). You can also run it in Junior spec; removing the power valve, which I believe is easily done, but please don't quote me on that. Buying a used rolling chassis saved me around £3,000 compared to getting a brand new Tonykart from Strawberry Racing. My engine is completely unsealed, but running it rich refers to the carb; you can manually adjust the carb settings on track. 3 - I do all my maintenance myself, the only anticipated exception to which would be rebuilding the bottom end of the engine and if the chassis needed straightening, I'd take it to a place with a jig and get them to bend it back into shape. I also wouldn't do any welding myself either. With regard to a cost, I haven't owned my kart for long enough to be able to give an accurate idea of it; thus far, I've only used 15 litres of fuel & 750ml of Shell M, bought 2 spark plugs and replaced some exhaust springs. Everything else has really been 1-off payments, i.e: Mychron, the engines themselves etc. If you want to look after it properly yourself, then yes it is a big commitment in terms of time (you also need to make sure you have all the right tools at your disposal), but for me that isn't an issue; it's quite therapeutic for me to come home and then busy myself in the garage after work or at weekends. 4 - There's a good video Karting1 made about transporting your karts on a budget (see link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qabbgqWAfdGUl6s) Hope this helps, and please ask any more questions you want :)
@Drizzydid

@@crispinzuercher3796 Wow Crispin once again thank you. You clarified a lot for me. I guess I should guy with rental karting for a while and then if I like a lot get my own kart. I was just thinking if I were to keep doing rental karting weeknds the costs would add up for driving a kart that I don't even own. Also I was thinking rental karting might limit track time whereas I assume if you own your own kart you can go to the track any time you want and drive it for as many laps without a 30minute to 1 hour time limit and just get your laps in...is that a presumption I'm making? The thing about teams is I guess the other thing I would like to ask that you brought up - how do you become part of a "team" and what perks does it give you? Is it a case of you pay a fee to join a group and having matching suits with a certain performance threshold or is a team less or more than that? And thanks for the transportation video I think it might be a bit hard for me and as well I am not mechanically savvy enough to probably fix my own car up as you seem to be able to do - ideally if I could store my own kart at the track should I get one down the line that would be better and then if I could pick up tidbits from the local track mechanics to learn a bit of the maintenance myself perhaps that would help but deffo I like to drive but I don't see myself enjoying the mechanical maintenance part so much from a time perspective! And oh okay I thought Briggs and Stratton Lo206 was a worldwide thing. I've heard of Junior, Lo206, TaG, and ROTAX. I'd heard Rotax was more intermediate than beginner compared to Lo206 but I might be incorrect I'll have to go and re-research that. Finally, for brands of your gear like helmet, tracksuit, gloves, shoes, rib protector, and I think neck brace is the last thing I know one shouldn't go so cheap when it comes to safety but what kind of gear can you be comfortable buying used/cheap and what must you absolutely not skimp on and buy only new if you had to say with brand recommendations if you have any? And yes I understand during rental karting all of this is provided but just in case for kart owning I would like to know this to add to my research so far. Thanks again Crispin.
@crispinzuercher3796
@crispinzuercher3796 4 жыл бұрын
@@Drizzydid No worries; any time :) Yeah; starting off with rental karting is best; if you hate it, you haven't got the hassle of selling your gear off as well! The costs would rack up, but if you do as much as you can reasonably afford, then it isn't too bad; it's not like the cost of maintaining your own kart will be amazingly cheap anyway; if you keep blowing up engines for some reason or another, it can get very expensive haha! Over in the UK, you pay to do a test day which lasts from say 10am - 4pm, and depending on how many people turn up, they split it up into discrete 10-15 minute sessions; cadets, juniors, seniors. otherwise, it's open pit lane and you get as much track time as you want. The assumption about rental karting is correct for the UK as well. Again, I'm not entirely sure on the situation where you are so I could be wrong. With teams, I imagine it's just a case of contacting them and saying something like "I'm interested in this, that and the other. Can you help me out please?". They're often pretty willing and able to help out even if you don't race with them as you're a potential future customer, and are often a great source of information. I've only done 2 test days with teams and was just a case of contacting the owner and asking. In terms of perks, I'm not entirely sure; I believe they provide all equipment, you can guarantee it'll be top quality (top quality costs serious money though), and it takes the hassle of owning a kart out of the equation. You'd have to ask someone who's done a lot more than I have however. Karts are amazingly simple to work on; they're such simple machines, so even if you have no mechanical experience, it's not difficult to pick stuff up at all. I for example know how to do a LOT of stuff on my kart but no clue at all on how to work on my car! Each to their own, but working on a kart is something I absolutely adore. Rotax probably is a higher class than the LO206, but there's no reason why you can't get a higher class engine and just run it in a restricted form for testing, just to get into it etc. Then as you get more comfortable with it you can start taking the restrictors off or do something like that. As I said, I did a huge amount of rental karting and quite a bit of owner driver testing before I got my own kart so picking the class was quite easy for me. With regard to brands, you can't go wrong with Sparco, OMP or Alpinestars. With regard to buying used, NEVER get a used helmet. You will have no idea what it's gone through and if it's been abused you're putting yourself at serious risk. The other stuff should be OK getting used, I just prefer getting new from a hygienic perspective to be honest. I'd also recommend getting a balaclava; saves the helmet lining in the long term. As far as rib protectors go, getting a hard shelled rib protector like the Tillett P1, FreeM Carbon/Aluminium or Bengio Bumper is the way to go. Getting a soft foam one will do absolutely nothing for you. And I know very few people who bother using a neck brace. I personally find them very restrictive and uncomfortable, so don't bother. Thanks, Crispin

Hi pal. Aim for a bigger better future. Karting was and is still the best thing that ever happened to me. If you saved £10 per week to buy your own gear, but it took you 5 whole years to save up the right amount of money, it would still be soo worth it. There's no sport like it, start saving more/ start earning more. KZbin video "how to make passive income" good luck 👍

Its a good question Tim but its hard to answer because everyones different. It mainly varies on the kart you are racing but also how often you are racing and where you are racing. How many spare parts might need and fuel ect so you have to take into account all these factors and work it out :)

I did the math, the most expensive part is firstly tires, then gas and paying the mechanics to service your engine. All in all, most tracks are about 1km long and you will pay about 2-3€ PER KILOMITRE. This does not include the fee you have to pay for the track to be allowed to enter the track. Also, racing is much more expensive than just practicing and enjoying the G forces while reaching 120km/h about an inch off the ground :)

I just turned 17, living in California very passionate about racing. I want to start karting this year if I even can with Covid around. Btw I want to race in IndyCar. But is it even possible for me who reads racing books about racing to get to IndyCar within my prime? I just need the track experience but I know that I am very late. Even if people say no I still want to try. But I am losing hope when I see 23 year olds in indy and I am 17 without financial support.
@DavidKFZ
@DavidKFZ 4 жыл бұрын
Blah Blah Blah Good news and bad news. Bad news is, I don't think it's possible as you don't have 10~ years of competitive karting under your belt - every driver on that indy field works their ASS off and people fight tooth and claw to get a seat using every ounce of effort they have while utilizing all their skillsets. But the good news... There's still hope for racing in other series if you do things correctly, and it's important to note that being a professional racing driver ISN'T what you think it is and you may not even want to be in the top leagues if you understand what it means. Your true job as a professional race driver is to make companies $$$ through sponsorships, business to business deals, marketing promos etc. Winning championships has nothing to do with the money you win, it's all about the exposure and attention it brings you, and in turn, how you can harness that to advertise your sponsor companies and gain motorsport and business connections, and then leveraging those accolades in further marketing material. Knowing this, if you're savvy with marketing and can create sponsorship packages/create other forms of value to bring a company net return, they'll invest money so you can race and in turn, make them money. Here's what you need to do now if you truly want to race, but know that once you know this there's no excuses anymore: Look up "Enzo Mucci" and study every single one of his videos on KZbin (he's all about getting people to high levels of motorsport regardless of their beginnings) and BUY HIS BOOK - "Get The Drive" and read through it ASAP. It will fuck with your perception on all professional sports but it will bring you clarity and enlightenment on what you have to do. So what exactly would one have to do? If you were to study marketing and specialise in copywriting you'll be 10 steps ahead of everyone else when it comes to providing strong value for companies so they'll sponsor you. The fastest racer on a grid might lose a sponsorship to you if you know how to speak "business" and give the companies what they want. Marketing w/ specialisation in copywriting (direct response style) is probably the 1 secret to riches that actually works, but it takes a number of years to grind it out and get decent, then good at it (worth it for life, trust me). A university course for marketing might help, but they teach "general copywriting" and marketing styles which only work for big corporations. This in a way is ideal for pro drivers, but you can't get work outside of an agency or inhouse corporation which means there's no backup and it's somewhat unsafe. "Direct response copywriting" however is self-directed, you'll learn through reading books and practicing it with clients online but its more "useful" and just about every single company practices it online which is why its so damned important. When it comes to the racing XP side of things, karting is where you cut your teeth and where you can get fast experience in an environment more intense than car racing, its why race drivers from all levels kart often, it's perfect practice and arguably harder which is how you develop the skill of racing faster than in cars. Lastly, you'll need to sacrifice everything going on in your life because you're a bit older and out of the racing "sweet spot". Every single pro driver bar none says they work like dogs. If you like gaming, hanging out with your friends, watching TV series, doing a sport, listening to music, browsing reddit and learning things, travelling, doing video editing, working on cars, cooking, whatever, you'll have to give it all up and live a very 1 dimensional life that revolves around 1 thing and 1 thing only: increasing your value as a racedriver. Blah Blah Blah is a silly screen name (fine tho if you keep it private) but your social media channels will have to be cleaned up/started anew and become a "corporate" marketing tool, you won't be able to speak freely or say anything remotely controversial and you'll have to be careful with everything you do because you become a "product" if you may, in a marketing machine. Treat every action like your sponsors and the world sees it. If I could go back in time to when I was 17 and tell myself this I would literally drop everything in my life and focus on karting, marketing, and direct response copywriting HARD. I'd give just about every waking hour to develop the skillset to become a money-making asset for a company so I could get sponsorships. Don't make the mistake I did, your time is very precious and is running out. I still aim to get into group GT3 but the path will be very unconventional and require total dedication to business and track time. You can make it but you'll have to change the way you do everything.

@@DavidKFZ Thanks man. My name is Andrew Villasana and racing is my life, I cannot stop thinking about it doing it after racing a Go Kart around a indoor track. Ever since then I have been hooked on racing and just want to learn everything about the sport and go faster and faster and gain pure pleasure from racing. I am willing to spend little to no time from everything like friends, family, and potential relationships in order to reach my dream. I am 100% focused since I don't have a backup plan. Racing is my number 1 plan and I am going to reach it and show I got what it takes to race professionally. I am going to find a way to buy a Go Kart, find a way to transport it to a track, practice hours and hours everyday including on the weekends since I am so behind I want to get as much practice in as possible, never going to waste time. Even when I can't drive on the track I am going to learn about the money side of the sport, my mind and my motivation for why I am trying so hard and what it means to me to work towards this goal. Even though most people are going to say "impossible" "you can't do it" or its "far-fetched" I am going to do it and prove to them that this kid with a goal from southern California from a low to mid class family can grind his way to the grid even if the odds were against him the whole time. My mindset is related to the quote from Steve McQueen "Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting" Nothing is going to stop me. I hope you complete your goals and dreams in your life too! 🙏

@@Icedcoffee03 It's certainly possible to get into karting on a lower budget, it's a big case of getting creative.. Probably the best thing you could do is go down to your local kart club and start asking them a lot of questions. The channel on KZbin: Karting1.co.uk talks about going karting on a low budget with videos called "Budget Kart Challenge". One of the club members can help you find a very cheap second hand kart and you can get it to and from the track in the back of a medium sized car if you pull it apart, or you can pull it apart and put the kart on the roof rack of a car to transport it. Whichever option you choose, the first step is to start looking. Btw if you don't have the self-starting attitude in racing, you're not gonna make it. Every racer gets out there and finds the way to make it work, and they do it very swiftly. It's about being resourceful and being the driving force, others won't take you by the hand and lead you. Don't let a lack of budget stop you from karting, instead starting doing some leg work

@@Icedcoffee03 Hey bro. I feel you & had the same goal at around the same age. I chose a little different path though. I bought a budget kart to get real life track driving experience, but to race competitively, I chose sim racing, because it was a lot cheaper & the competition level there is A LOT higher than in real life, as its more affordable obviouly. I became very competitive there, close to world level, was 100% commited & dedicated to racing only, but few years ago had to quit due to health reasons. If you want any help with sim racing, I can share some tips & my experience. There are great opportunities in sim racing too. Few sim racers already made it in the real world after winning online competitions with sponsorship prizes.
