My wife and I faced this same dilemma coming out of the Great Recession in the USA in 2009 (at age 53) and quickly learned to just pay everything off, never buy depreciating assets (like new cars), stop spending money on non-essentials, and learn to minimalize. 10 years later, we were debt free and living on a cash basis... and we have never lived better! It takes a bit of financial discipline, but you can do it. I will add that moving abroad was the best move we ever made. You are still young enough to reach your goals, just stick to the plan. Best wishes for the future. #tropicshade!

I try to live frugally. I have a paid for car, only a small mortgage, no credit cards, only a small amount in student loans which I do intend to pay off by the end of the financial year. I am well on my way to being debt free and when that time comes I know it will feel like a bit of a weight lifted but then I really need to knuckle down and invest more! Moving abroad is definitely the go when it comes to retiring or if you can work online and get a western salary because I'm sure as you know money goes a lot further in a lot of non western countries!

@livinginthepacific Australia missed out on the 2008 GFC to a great extent. We kept selling coal to China 🇨🇳 Only Problem with that was our housing prices hardly dropped . Australian government policy was to use housing to kick the can down the road. Now we having some of the highest housing prices on the Earth 🌎 🙃

I lived in Perth in 2012 and paid 200/week in a house share! That was nothing compared to my weekly earnings at the time! Same situation here in the UK - just unrealistic/depressing to sign up for a 30year mortgage on an overpriced flat! I’m planning on moving back to Brazil and have the “luxury” of buying a flat with the deposit money I would need in the UK and become rent free! No point to be on a “good” engineering salary where half of net income goes to rent!

@@_mklein I think that moving to more affordable places is what a lot of people are going to do going forward. Life is for living and not just existing to work and pay bills and have very little left to put towards your future or have any kind of "fun money".
