how can you place a price like this on human life? its insidious, the effects of Hep C are significant on ones' quality of life (a term not often used around non-terminal patients but is nevertheless appropriate here). Someone like me who has Hep C, but is finding it next to impossible to access treatment, experiences long periods of lethargy, loss of libido, stamina, and energy levels. It all goes straight down the drain, I have been trying to get on one of these treatments for over ten years unsuccessfully and dont have the liquidity, fiscally that is, to be able to access private treatments. Big pharma definitely has some questions to answer, and someone has to make them accountable. If not the governments of the world, who?

My younger sister (55 years old) had Hep C diagnosed for 10+ years and was near death. She had a good Accounting job with quite good Health Insurance. They kept putting her off until she was nearing death before FINALLY giving her the Harvoni for 12 weeks. Well, by the 8th week she didn't have a trace of Hepatitis in her blood tests. She completed the 12 week course of treatment and has been Hep Free for about a year. Still, her liver was SO damaged that she is still on the list for Transplant. In California if you are poor and on Medi-Cal they do not give you the Harvoni course of treatment. Basically you are given the Death Penalty because you are poor. Harvoni is now considered a "cure" but millions of people are doomed because of the high price of the drug course. Frustrating to say the least...

I am now age 72 and discovered about 2 months ago that I had Hep C. I had a blood transfusion when I was age 21 because of a bleeding ulcer. I have not had any symptoms of liver damage at all. I thought I had Rocky Mountain spotted fever that lasted a couple days but when the health department did a blood test, they found my liver enzymes off a bit. So they did a blood test for hep C and I do have it. The level of virus in my blood is low. Now I am taking Harvoni and just took my 4th pill. So far no side effects. I am not ashamed of having this virus as it is certainly not my fault but I must get rid of it. My wife, who I have been married to since age 25,does not have hep C.

I live in Canada. I contracted years ago and I am being looked after by the Alberta Gov/blue cross. I am now 1/2 way through treatment and I feel pretty good so far with very little side effects. No one should be denied treatment if they cant afford the medicine, however in our modern society almost everyone has health insurance which pays for it. HepC drugs might be epensive today, but think of the past years of treatment with inferior drugs which were toxic and quite expensive aswell. Now you have a cure for HepC and it is actually very cheap and affordable.

I know that big pharma has to make their research investment back but these drugs are way to expensive. Up until recently it was really difficult to get the NHS to fund treatment unless you were really sick. My cousin didn't want to wait so just ordered his Harvoni online from PulsarMeds.com. Society's classic dilemma, two economic systems: capitalism, which has the incentives to create super drugs like Harvoni but at torturous prices or socialism which invents little or nothing but has managed prices. As heartless as Gilead is I take capitalism. Most capitalist companies like United Airlines recently can't screw up long or people stay away.. A way out is for medical care systems like mine in the US to pay for medial tourism. Also, big pharma bought de facto monopoly influence in the US at the expense of many alt med solutions that are as good or better thus corrupting pure capitalism.
