The Cost to Upgrade a Water Meter in Los Angeles and Project Update with Fireplace Install and More

How much does it cost to upgrade a water meter and why do you need to do so?
This week we finally got the water meter upgraded and moved. The reason to have it upgraded was for our fire sprinklers to have enough water flow to work properly, and the reason that we moved the meter was to make our driveway bigger. Besides that we install our electric fireplace and share the realization of not negotiating who is responsible for its install. Finally we show what else was completed this week with our wine wall handles and motion sensor under-cabinet lighting.

I added an ADU in my backyard with 2 baths but without sprinkler requirement. My plumber told me that we have to upgrade the meter from 3/4 to 1" nontheless. I was hoping to avoid this meter upgrade.

Hello, you videos are so helpful, we need to change out water meter from 3/4” to 1” and the city requires the work to be done by a class A or c34 licensed contractor. Do you have any referrals and also how much is the cost. The meter will be in the same place as the old one. Thanks, looking for to your reply.

Is it true the home owner has to pay to upgrade the water meter from 3/4” to 1” ? Even if they are digging the streets of city property? They are telling us that it is 10k to 20k? Is there a way around this? What if someone cannot afford to pay this ?

I'm confused. How do you go from 1" from the city to 1.25" to the house, when all house plumbing is usually 1/2"!

We were/are also just as confused. We just follow requirements set forth by the city. I believe in this case the fire department required us to do this to help with pressure regulation for the fire sprinkler lines.

City of Whittier says the homeowner has to pay for the new meter and plumbers are asking 30-40k

Are you trying to upgrade your current line to a bigger line? You would need to pay for this directly to the city, the city should replace everything up to and including the meter. You would be responsible to have your home connected to the new meter but I cannot imagine a single connection being $30k-$40k, something seems off.

@@SEFSU its for a new line for sb9 new construction and lot. I found another contractor that quoted 15k so going in the right direction

@@SEFSU Like everything in life, if you buy at walmart u get what you paid for, i tell my customers the same when they called me, in the plumbing industry we have a saying , if you pay cheap you get to pay twice, so why pay more the first time to get it done right.
