In a real situation, Edmond would never forget that Mercedes was his enemy's wife. It was a miracle he didn't get revenge on her and Albert in the book, Reading the Annals of Tacitus, I read about Princess Booudicca's revenge against the Romans for the tortures she and her daughters faced. Even the city of Londinium was burned in the revolt against Rome. Boudicca's anger against Rome caused her to destroy and burn a city with the population there. It is much more likely that he directed his anger at Mercedes and Albert for being Fernand's wife and son. That he wants to destroy everything related to Fernand. I miss Haydee being more cold and vengeful, she also wanting to get revenge on Fernand's family for the death of her family and for his years as a slave in the book. Anger makes you do destructive things and revenge is not clean and will lead to tragic situations. Happy endings only in Hollywood films.

The Orientalism in the novel works with disguises and oppositions. Almostevery chapter echoes with dramatic irony, threatening a potential reversal offortunes of powerful people who have earned their position through illicit orignoble means. The plot reminds readers that socially prominent individualsacting as guardians of the status quo are really the usurpers whose fortunesmust be overturned. Morcerf (Fernand) makes his fortune and careerworking for and betraying Ali Pasha, dubbed the Muslim Bonaparte, whose contribution to Greek independence has been all but forgotten. The critiqueof the West bristles with ambivalence. One of the more sympathetic charac-ters, Maximilien Morrel, shapes his military career earning the Legion ofHonor ‘killing Arabs’in the Algeria campaign. These reversals have echoesin the Roman or Christian carnival, that takes place before Lent whenpeople could assume disguises and cross class lines: the rich can pretend tobe peasants for a day because they will not be trapped by poverty and thepoor can dream of being rich, mixing with the nobility and attending theirballs. The plan of vengeance, tailored for each of the successful but culpable indi-viduals represents aspects of Western European society and institutions; theseare the traces and mechanisms of empire. As previously stated, these are allegorical, if ambivalent, interpretations: Villefort represents the law and Danglars, the banking system, Fernand is the army and governmentinstitutions. The film The Prisoner of Château d'If (1988), has the Edmond ending with Haydee kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIrGiIaKZZ6pmdU

Very insightful! I have other classics on my list for future videos, including The Last of the Mohicans, and I already covered Beowulf and The Scarlet Letter. Are there any titles that interest you that I haven't covered yet?

The 2002 version was terrible. There are many ways to tell the same story, but the screenwriter doesn't want to offer a more complex psychological development for Edmond and offer more depth and realism in his relationship with Mercedes. Tolstoy in Anna Karenina offers a deep and complex understanding of human relationships. The movie is not a masterpiece or better than the book. I liked the 1979 French series with jacques weber and the anime Gabkutsuou.,

I do need to check out the other adaptations, because I saw the 2002 movie before I read the book. The book blew me away and completely minimized that movie.
