The Countdown Clock | 2003

The Countdown clock in the set from 2003. Introduced at the beginning of Championship of Champions XI, the debut of the 'stripes' set was met with a lot of dislike from viewers. Despite lasting for five years, it's regarded as Countdown's worst set design.

I like the pink stripes set but it has a lot of differences on the wing set

I think the reason so many people hated the set was the fact it was pink and white, when having it blue and white would have matched the tiles more

Yeah definitely. The blue sets have been more fitting to Countdown, particularly with the pattern backgrounds of letters and numbers.

I kind of like this set, but preferred the wings one. I'd say people hated the brown wooden set more. The fact that that one only last two years says something too. I like the current set a lot, but wish they'd changed the blue to a different hue or colour altogether. This set creation and clock looks so close to the real thing. WD! I made a few on PPT over the years. I remade the last 3 sets / clocks including the current one. I've used them when we've played Countdown as a family etc.

The wings set was definitely better and is probably Countdown's most iconic set design, which is probably why a lot of people like it. The current set, personally, is my favourite because they made this huge leap into modernising it and it looks great. Thanks a lot for your comment :) These will be disappearing again soon to make way for some newer ones so watch out for them.

@@AdamBeachDesign I really like the current set too for the same reason. I would however have preferred if they changed the blue hue from the previous set. The best incarnation of the wings one was the orange one as it seemed warm and homely- appropriate for Countdown.

I have to say that the earliest Countdown episodes I remember watching with my nan are the Des O’Connor episodes, so the pink set design has a special place in my heart. That said, the wooden set is my least favourite, and the wings were certainly iconic (though the tangerine wings do come across as a bit much).

I think it was mainly it's questionable colour scheme, it should have been blue to fit the tiles
