It is sad to note that Singaporean cyclists on the whole are very brand conscious, way more that other countries where cycling as a sport is even more established. Unfortunately, the dearth of routes where people can cycle on the island means everyone is gathered around a few spots and this draws out all the poseurs. True, there are poseurs everywhere in the world but other countries offer a greater variety of routes and options so the cycling scene is more diverse and healthy.

That might be a cultural thing at large? Less an issue specific to cycling?

There’s nothing wrong with being brand conscious with bikes. The best bikes are the established brands, and as a consequence, are pricey. I do believe it’s probably helpful to start out with an entry level road bike and move up. Than you can appreciate the differences

Not so true.. you better check Singapore as an island state how much in terms of Percentage we have cyclist friendly park connectors.. I don’t see anything wrong with chasing the brands I think a lot of Singaporeans are reasonable. If they want performance they get better brands if they just want to commute they get something more practical ie foldable bikes..

you know its sad when people purposely go to 4th Ave because it's a "Climb" lol. Also a lot of posers and poser groups after covid. I don't see this type of cyclists in other countries, who really don't care what brand of clothing or bike you use. esp those group from the PeNiS cycling club hahaha, I avoid them like the plague! They say cycling is one of many forms of escape, but here in SG, there's no escaping these poser creatures.

Try to ride and complete before 7.30 on weekdays, or perhaps before 10 on weekends and you will be fine. It gets too hot after that anyway. I drive and cycle, but admit Singapore drivers are impatient and aggressive. Ride with care.

BTW, Marco Cycles or anyone, can tell me if it is safe to park say a $3.5-5k tops Giant TCR/Propel/Defy (probably will keep it bone stock, dont have much disposable $ to spend) just outside the HDB flat along the corridor 2m away from the front door? Properly locked for both front wheels + frame. I just might install a CCTV + LAN cable + conduit as well for additional visual deterrence, neighbours no issue atm. Or is it just better to get a Java Air Fuoco with 105 R7120 for around 2k and be done with it.....i know some would say it's a s*** bike but i gotta be practical as well, due to constraints.

whilst there are really bad and inconsiderate drivers who are a danger to other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, there are also very bad cyclists who expect pedestrians to yield to them at zebra or traffic crossings, and that's both dangerous and unlawful. it cuts both ways. exercise consideration and we will have a better society. the other major danger are the foreign workers driving the vans/trucks and public buses.

It’s just one call away to LTA you are right. True rich does have capacity to dismiss noise. So for you cyclists out there, try to learn to practise more civic mindedness, it goes a long way to allowing yourselves to enjoy these cul de sacs. By the way instead of buying expensive spandexes and Little trinkets of gears for that extra perceived wattage savings. Makes more sense to hop onto a business class slot for your next summer vacation to europe to experience the real deal?

It’s great that cycling is popular, but sad that it is seen as a vehicle to project ones perceived status. ‘Look pro, ride slow’ is well and truly alive as elsewhere in the world. SNG doesn’t really have the hills to expose the posers from the true ‘cycling’ enthusiasts. Here in AUS, strong riders are held in greater respect than a bling bike….

"You have to be a sadist to love it...." LOL I like riding faster from time to time but I don't mind being dropped; part and parcel of riding and I know exactly why I ride. No loss of face being dropped; ride and be happy for the ride, not to keep up with someone else's ass. Peace and safety. That crack line between the two lanes on 4th Ave is a dangerous one to snare the front wheel on. Not keen to ride when there are so many crammed up there, wavering their bikes up that slope in labour.
