The roadsigns and their colours can be a bit confusing. The main ones you want to look for are the big white on blue signs, which have cities on them. More often than not, there's gonna be at least one major city listed on them which is easy to find on the map. The big black on white signs only point to neighbourhoods, industrial zones etc, and can be ignored majority of the time, unless you are in a very big city (Helsinki, Tampere, Turku etc) and can't find the exact region. The big white on green signs point to a highway that goes to the direction of the city listed on the sign. For the street signs, black on white (and white on blue signs in some regions) are the street names, while white on black only points to some specific service or building, for example hospital, library, train station etc. White on blue street signs with distances marked on them point to bike lanes to various locations (mostly local)

Good stuff Icy. Bilingual signs with Finnish and Swedish are usually found in coastal areas. Usually down near Helsinki and Turku but also ok parts of the west coast

All of Finland has bilingual sings if the place has name on swedish and finnish no matter where you are. Only in majority swedish cities (i.e. some coastal areas), the swedish name is above finnish.

Very well played. I am a Finnish GG-player and our country isn't easy for regionguessing even for us who are living here. It's quite easy to see if you're in the southern or northern half of the country, but that's it. Every town look the same and there's no difference on architecture etc. I want to give you some basic hints: - bilingual streetsigns and roadsigns refer to coastal areas on the southern or western coasts, when the other language is Swedish. In the far north there are signs in Finnish and Sámi. - Roadsigns that are black on white, are local and not very useful before you know the city or town. They can point also eg. to a railway station or places like that. - White on blue signs usually have the most significant sign on top. It often points to some bigger city, but unfortunately not always. - If you see a road number and the border is dashed, it means that you are not on that road but on a route to get to that road. If the border is solid, you are on that exact road. That same thing is in all Nordic countries. - Pay attention to 3 and 4 digit road numbers. The rule of thumb is that their first digit grows from south to north.

Spelling might actually be one of the easiest parts of the Finnish language.. :) It's a phonetic language, so it is written exactly as it is spelled (with very minor exceptions).
