The couple behind one of the largest African-American art collections in the world

Bernard and Shirley Kinsey started their art collection in the early 1970s. It now numbers more than 700 pieces and counting, and is recognized as one of the largest, most encompassing collections chronicling the Black American experience. Elise Preston has their story.

The same reason many studios used black and white filming. Color cost more, especially back then. What are you implying?

Because most news footage at the time was shot in black and white. Hell, color TVs weren't even that widespread in the early 60s, our family didn't have one until years later, and newspapers were mostly black and white except for one section in color.
