To say that her work is stunning is an understatement. There’s no word in the English language to describe how beautiful her art is.

Yes, dear Ms Butler, we are all human beings. Your work is touching me so deeply as I watch this video. I am not a person of colour but I agree so much with what you are saying about people, about connecting unknowns to the present by honouring them in your work. Your work is beyond words yet how you explain it is equally as beautiful. You are a true artist. God bless. 🙏🥰

I came across her exhibition in Art Institute of Chicago by chance and ran to museum shop to find its book. It was so striking and monumental. In any method, technique or medium... her way of illustrating her subjects is one of the most striking example of portraiture in any sense, or era. This is a kind of art you have to see in person, both in craftmanship and context.

The work induces thought. What words were spoken and influences made before black families decided to migrate north? A 1941 drive from North Carolina wasn't up the interstate. It was through towns and communities. Were they afraid? As they experienced "new" things, road signs and people, what did they think. Were they hungry? Were people kind to them? Did they see other families in their yards, clothes drying outside, the smell of salt marsh, smokestack, forest or backyard fires. Were their first encounters with northerners intriguing? Did they sense apprehension? Was there a conversation, words spoken that quelled fears. Did they experience promise?
