For each digit on the clock, we select a nut whose difference between the number of angles on the external and internal polygon is equal to a given number (digit)

You have to subtract the number of corners/angles in the outer shape from the number of corners/angles on the inner shape. Ex: the gear with the octagon(8) on the outside with the triangle(3) inside goes on the 5. 8-3=5. The gear with the square(4) on the outside with the triangle(3) on the inside goes on the 1. 4-3=1, and so on.
