The Covert Nintendo Switch Dock

I got a chance to try the Genki Covert Switch Dock and it's got some great trade offs compared to the official Dock.
UPDATE! Looks like the Covert Dock doesn't like automatic RGB settings, changing this to Full RGB fixed the color issue we were seeing in this video. This resulted in their images looking near identical

Kevin; when using the Genki Dock; go to setting on the Switch and set The Resolution and RBG range to Automatic. I noticed the same thing you did as well, but when I changed the settings to automatic; the genki dock seemed better. Also I was using the Mclassic adapter with the Genki dock and it looked a bit better than when the Mclassic is used with the regular dock.

@RyluRocky

No, not if Genki coded it right, the reason switches were bricking when other companies were making their switch docks is because their adapters were "hard coded" to replicate the processes of the switch's current firmware, if it was flexibly coded then the adapter itself can automatically change to reflect the firmware processes correctly, so even if the firmware changes, the adapter will change as well to replicate the proper protocols for the new firmware, regardless of the firmware. Which is what the official Switch adapter is coded to to, the code is flexible and will change to fit the switch using it, regardless of how many different switches with different firmware are used on the exact same adapter.
@RavenRose91
@RavenRose91 4 жыл бұрын
Porter Frazier very true, very true. However, to play devil’s advocate, can’t Nintendo come out with a firmware update that just won’t communicate with genki? I know absolutely NOTHING about coding but just too cautious to risk my switch to see if it’ll work. I got it as a gift and couldn’t get another one (even if I could find one).
@RyluRocky
@RyluRocky 4 жыл бұрын
@@RavenRose91 Very interesting, I might be misinterpreting what you meant, but if Nintendo purposely targeted genki I would find it odd, it is possible for Nintendo to do so, but unless Genki had some type of contractual agreement with Nintendo (which probably means they're in a partnership, which would make it even more unlikely as to why Nintendo would "backstab them") Nintendo would have to illegally steal "fingerprints" from Genki (if Genki didn't want to share them,) in order to prevent Genki's adapter from working with the switch, however even in the highly unlikely scenario that that does happen, the worst your genki could do, is not be able tranfer data between your switch and micro SD card, which I believe is already impossible to do (outside the micro sd card and switch) unless you "hack" your switch. The worst your Genki could do, is what it's no longer allowed to do, in that the Switch could be coded to refuse hdmi output until it is removed from the Genki Covert Dock (not because anything's breaking, but simply because it was coded not to.) The Genki will still be able to charge the Switch, and it will do so without a hitch or any issues regardless of the firmware. That means it won't increase the chance of it bricking your switch when the firmware changes. This is all assuming Genki properly coded the Genki Covert Dock, otherwise there's definetly a high chance it will eventually burn out and brick your switch, but assuming the Dock has been commercially available for at least 2-3 months, with reviewers having little to no issues, then it's likely the code was properly constructed at minimal in concept and "well made". TO SUMMARIZE; (because I really suck at getting to the point,) at worst the the switch won't be able to work in docked mode (,nothing's broken, your switch will just not allow docked mode until it's disconnected from genki's device), the Genki Covert Dock will still be able to charge your dock without increased risk of a "brick". If you have any more questions, because I apparantly can talk forever, just ask, thanks for listening.

NYKO are the worst! Their third party dock ended up frying my switch and which Nintendo kindly sent me a replacement for. Now I can never trust third-party docks! On top of that NYKO didn’t do anything about it even though they told me they would send a voucher as a “sorry” - they never did.
@Stabbyson
@Stabbyson 4 жыл бұрын
Wasn't part of that due to after a Nintendo update? They dont have source code or anything to accurately make things 100% compatible with Nintendo, Nyko could have just been the Unlucky brand who fried everyone's switch

@Stabbyson Nyko were supposed to refund me the purchase of the dock, but couldn’t because I was based outside of the US, so instead offered an Amazon Gift card. But they never sent it to me, even after chasing them several times and after providing so many details along with evidence of the repair and replacement from Nintendo. They may not have the source code functionality on their end, but at the end of the day, they’ve sold a product, that’s branded as compatible with the Switch, that has caused damage and alot of time wasted (not to forget all the save data loss etc). Clearly more testing of the product needed to be done before actually putting it on the market.

I funded the Kickstarter for this. I use it full time for months now and it hasn’t ha an issue whatsoever. Make sure the switch video output is set to auto and the display is exactly the same as the official dock. I tested it on two tv, a Vizio m series and my big LG OLED. Both are the same as the original dock. I’ve even left my switch plugged in for weeks at a time on this dock and everything is all good. At this point I feel comfortable recommending this as a solid third party option. Also I’ll point out that my switch is a original launch day unit. Great product and makes traveling with a switch much lighter for both charging and connecting to displays. Ymmv.

Thanks for the review, Kevin! I was really annoyed the last time I travelled to a friend's in another country and couldn't play the Switch together because I didn't bring the dock with me. Then when I saw this on Kickstarter, I backed it right away. I also backed their earlier project, the Genki bluetooth adaptor which delivers, so I "trusted" them to a certain degree. But I still couldn't help fearing the bricking issue so I still haven't even opened mine from the box! It's great to hear that it's truly safe to use! I can't wait to try it out the next time I travel somewhere. Also, I really don't mind the minor difference in the colour/brightness, but thank you for pointing that out for us, too!

Something really really important about this dock for those using GameCube controller adapters (I was a kickstarter backer): The USB-A port does not give enough power to consistently power the adapter, so while playing smash, there would be times where my controller would disconnect/reconnect midmatch and I would have to press a button to reconnect, hover over my character, select it, and then get back to the match. It caused a bunch of incredibly frustrating deaths and losses as a result. Smash was basically unplayable. I tried two different adapters and several controllers to test it, then emailed Genki and their response was the power distribution issue. To fix it, I bought a USB 3.0 hub from Walmart for like $20 that is powered by plugging a power adapter into the wall. Since then, I have had no issues and everything is great.

have you tried to switch rumble feature off on the controllers? as the rumblemotors can drain high currents in microseconds when they start to rotate, an if more than one controller starts the rumble at the same time you get a current spike that the sIngle USB-A cant deliver and it shuts momentarly down.
@RyanBecker

Brato I don’t use rumble, and with a GameCube controller adapter you need 2 USB ports for rumble to even work, so with the Genki dock alone, you cannot use rumble that I am aware of

its possible that they might "if" you have solid proof showing that it was bricked by their dock however i wouldnt know how they would know since there are other docks that caused something like this to happen. im thinking about getting this for travel, but at the moment im using a dock shell from basstop that has you use the official dock board. its not as small as the covert dock, but it fits perfect in the pocket of one of the bigger pdp carrying cases
@GreekoCanuck
@GreekoCanuck 4 жыл бұрын
My big question is, how many docks have bricked since this was originally a problem ? Nintendo has sent out a few firmware updates, have people who use 3rd party docks had issues? Also, Bob Wulff from Wulffden did some tests as well and he seems to believe the big issue came when the system was in sleep mode. So, while it’s “Sleeping”, the switch might get the surge of power which could potentially brick your switch. So, I’m wondering, as long as you don’t leave it plugged into the 3rd party dock when not in use, would that solve any problems? To charge the switch, just use the official charger, while playing during your travels, plug it in to the Genky or whatever 3rd party dock? I actually bought the Jumpgate 3rd party dock from Skull&Co and had it on my switch for a full month with no issues...and a lot of people have commented that they are using a 3rd party dock as their main dock with no issues...So I’d really like to know if bricking of switches via 3rd party docks is still a problem? Sorry for the long post. Great video!

The one thing nobody points out about this is that it is not only small compared to the normal dock. It substitutes not only the dock but dock PLUS that huuuge charger. It is a good bit smaller than the official charger itself so in the end it is an even bigger difference in bag space than people always talk about when they hold the official dock next to the genki. I'm getting one for sure.

I backed Genki’s crowdsourcing campaigns for both the Bluetooth adapter and the covert dock. I have not been disappointed yet. Their ingenuity, engineering, marketing/pr, and customer support are top-notch bar none. They continue to deliver excellent products, and I am excited to see what they come up with next. I can not recommend them highly enough.

I got mine though kick starter a few months back, I love this dock, so far no issues, very convenient, but I am away nervous due to it being 3rd party. But after I'm playing at a friend's house a few hours, i forget that I'm using it and not my normal dock until I go to pack it up.

I’ve had this for a month. I love it except that unlike the regular dock, it doesn’t automatically turn on my tv and switch to the channel which it is connected.

Washed out image is due to RGB color space being set wrong in auto mode, try setting both Switches to the same colorspace and make sure both inputs in the TV are using the same colorspace. Any dock is a video output passthrough so it is not capable of image manipulation at all so it is impossible to look different as it is literally passing the video from the Switch to the TV.

Besides there fact that you need a Hyperkin stand so the events on the back don't overheat your switch, this looks great, however like I said, you still need a stand like the Hyperkin stand. The vents on the back are blocked off anyway without a separate stand.

I use a very small USB C to HDMI adapters , the kind you would use with a macbook pro , and I just have to power it trough the original charger or a power bank . Also I have 2 portable displays that can handle the Switch directly with an USB C cable (the kind that can do video) , and I just have to power the display with a PD charger .
