For the past decade, Malik Divers has run a small Philadelphia stable where he trains teenagers to ride and keep horses. Divers says that the horses keep kids off the streets and teach them responsibility. For 18-year-old Shahir Drayton, riding has even become an essential form of therapy.

As the saying goes "The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man." Good for Shahir! For all those criticizing his horsemanship: If he keeps it up, he will learn. It looks like he loves his horse. We all started somewhere.

Thats fine that hes going to learn, but guess what? That horse is gonna have to be the learning curve. You want a shank bit shoved in your mouth and a saddle that doesnt fit properly and hurts your withers and rubs your sides raw? Especially when youre green and still learning yourself? I dont think so. An animal should not have to suffer for someone to learn. Any animal lover knows this.

You can criticise someone's wrong actions while not attacking the person who's doing wrong. If nobody tells you then they may never find out and at some point become stuck in their ways, although if someone really cares about the horses (rather than just wanting to attack someone) they need to know how to communicate effectively. There are plenty of comments doing it the right way (and even acknowleding the good sides of what they're doing too) so hopefully by now they've learned the "right" way to do it.

Lower your hands and lengthen the reins, you have a shank and you aren't doing work that requires this much contact, get the bit fitted to the horses' mouth, it's too short, loosen the bit strap itself and get a saddle with a wider tree. Just up riding videos on youtube and you should get the hang of it. Also, it doesn't sound like you have rubber shoes on to protect your horses' joints from the concrete. Good luck!

@cooolchick647

This is a great idea but this horse is clearly uncomfortable, the kid doesn't know how to properly control of train the horse ( which is not completely his fault cause that's how he was taught and from what he seen on tv), the equipment seems ill fitting and looks painful or At least uncomfortable to these horses, and the stable seems very inadequate and dangerous for these horses. And not saying that just cause it isn't a farm grand stable, it looks run down and has a tendency to get wet and muddy. Again this is a great idea, but horses are extremely uncomfortable and the horse keeps tossing his head and the kid keeps the reins drawn up and taut and yanking on it. A bit is a painful thing to a horse and isn't comfortable at all and then when it gets tugged on its ten times worse. I truly hope someone who th some experience will step in and help these guys out so they can learn better methods of horse care, training and riding.

Beautiful painted pony! I think there is/was a stable at Cobbs Creek. Years ago I was driving to work and a man on a horse rode by me going the other way. I think it was Springfield Avenue. I love the story, I think it’s really cute and helpful. I think with some better equipment and a bit more training, this guy could be an awesome rider.

The saddle doesn't fit, the horse is clearly fighting it, the man can't ride. . . The horses are kept in such a strange looking barn. Where is its pasture? I see none of that. To me this falls under horse abuse. To others it may not. However, anyone who clearly loves horses even if they don't ride should know the best place for a horse is an open big pasture.

I wouldn’t even think that you you own horses in a city like this. They really don’t have the proper environment a horse needs. Maybe they should be considering boarding a horse somewhere where they actually have pastures instead of in the middle of a city.....

while i understand this group is a good thing an all... is anyone going to mention the risks of trotting on pavement and did you see the way he smacked his horse with the rein or perhaps how tight he was yanking on that bit? this kid has very little experience i predict an accident in his future

He doesn't even ride properly. The tack looks very painful on the horse, not to mention he's constantly pulling straight on the reins. Very poor horsemanship.

to all the people complaining: why don't you go and pay for the people in the video to get "properly educated" on how to handle and ride horses? these people obviously love their horse pals and are trying their best to take care of them. the horses are their ray of sunshine in a dark world. stop dumping all this negativity on them, words only go so far.

I love the sentiment of this video, but there are SO many things wrong here! The tack is fitted incorrectly(I kept seeing the saddle sliding around cause the cinch wasn't tight enough and the saddle was a bad fit for the horse), the rider has NO idea how to properly ride and control the horse(holding reins too high resulting in the horse throwing his head up, pulling on the horse's mouth, not keeping a proper seat and heels weren't down, etc etc), horse trotting/loping on the pavement(hard on the horse's joints), etc. Made me cringe to watch this video.

I used to tell the superintendent that the grass behind the school would be a great place for horses, and students could ride to school if they had a horse. I taught middle school, and I wanted a better future for my students, and a horse can give them a better activity to focus on.
