The song basically highlights the fact that when you really like or love someone, even when they hurt you, your love doesn't die immediately. Feelings can't be turned on and off like a light bulb. It takes time to heal, esp. when the heart is involved. It hurts so much when this happens because even know you know you should just let it go, you cant seem to. That is why the words "such a fool for you" makes so much sense. We become colossal idiots when we're in love.

It is hurtful to think about but you are so right truer words have yet to explain heartache as well as you have. BTW I've always taken exception to the largely taken out of context quote saying "it is better to have loved and lost then to have never loved at all" that to me shows that man had never been in so deep like the way Dolores is speaking about.

The story behind this song is, when Dolores was a young teen about 16 she used to go to the local Disco just like other teens around her age. However' she seen this boy at the dance who she thought was a dream, of course there was craic with her mate & the usual here he is. This same guy walked over to Delores an asked her up to dance, it was at this disco she had her first kiss & she fell for the guy, after the dance was over they parted & went their different ways. A month later she was living for the Saturday night & her return to the same Disco, she watched the door all night waiting for he heart throb to arrive. He eventually did & after a while she noticed him heading over to where she was sitting . She got all excited as he got to where she & her friend were sitting. He stood there for a moment & asked her girlfriend up to dance! It broke her heart to see her friend dancing with her Heart throb. That was the end of the romance & the usual hurt & pain followed .... Some years later when Delores told the story to a journalist, she said, I lost my first love that night , But I got a great song out of it! RIP Delores ....

I think this song moved a lot of people without them even being aware of the lyrics. You've got the big orchestral sound; it's hard not to like that. Yet, at the same time, you've got an insistent march beat. Everything else, the guitar and vocals are so soft, but these drums are saying "This is important _NOW,_ you have to LISTEN to me." Which communicates the passion and jealousy very, very effectively. It may interest people to know the chord progression is essentially the same as the chorus to Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb", which is another popular song with an orchestral arrangement. It's D to A, then C to G, all major chords. That's the essence of it, although the Pink Floyd song repeats D and A before moving to C and G twice, while this song just does each chord once (and never changes to anything else). Melodically, it goes into a whole other territory. I think it's absolutely beautiful, with the sound of her voice perfectly blending with the strings and the soft guitar tone. To read the actual lyrics is a bit of a surprise, even though I've heard the song well over 200 times. You didn't have to run out and buy this one, you would hear it everywhere you went.

***** That's only funny in an _argument,_ dumbass. You don't just say it _in passing._ You get into a long debate, and drive your opponent crazy, until he goes on a long rant, then you just type TL;DR. It's not funny from a random stranger, especially not when the OP was pleasant. Nobody cares what you didn't read. That is useless information. You're just putting your username there to say "Hi, I'm a bitch." And furthermore, the whole second half of my OP is just musician talk, not for everybody, and especially not for you, because I'm pretty sure you're WAY too dumb to learn an instrument. And no, TL;DR won't be funny if you say it _now,_ either.

Rip Dolores! This was my first true girlfriend and mine song when we were kids. Another sad lose for the music world. We're loosing all our childhood musicians. Kinda makes you put stuff in prospective. RIP me Irish lady thank u for the beautiful music.

Im just rediscovering this song from my early childhood I remember listening to it all the time on the bus ride to school. This song was always something so special to me because of the fact that it has one of the most beautiful beginnings to it and Dolores voice is one that was so unique that it would be almost impossible to re-create I can't believe she is dead now I don't think anyone could ever make a song like this one ever again with that beautiful voice and beginning. listening to this song again after so many years has brought tears to my eyes. Does anyone else find this song to be so beautiful that's almost hypnotic? It really is true what they say that great things don't last forever. RIP Dolores

vannessa innocent I understand, sometimes we choose only to remember the good things, We all wish things could've turned out better. I realize now that we were both assholes, but not all the time. never happy(for more than 5 min. at a time) never satisfied is what's being taught now, should we ever think of what life would be like without them, perhaps we would make different decisions. Although not all relationships are meant to be, can we end them better? I hope so. Sadness and hatred are traits that are passed on and on.... can we find it in our hearts to forgive?

My mom was an actress in the Midwest. It’s harder out here for roles because you’re not in New York or LA. She took a lot of stage roles, and became moderately successful, but completely in my 11 year old eyes. I would have to go to her rehearsals after school, do homework backstage or in the car while I listened to my homemade mixes in the radio. Backstage I would see my childhood crush (Daughter of my mother’s cast mate. She went to my school and all the boys liked her. We would talk and play. Eventually it helped me out in high school when we became the most rumored item and nobody knew why we had such a crazy connection over others.) But, this song, it comforted me and still does in a super nostalgic way. I’m not with the girl from school, but, the one that I will probably marry is a voice twin for the Cranberries. When I hear this song, it is a unique feeling of happy nostalgia from good times in the past coupled with upbeat anticipation of the future with my future.

I love this song takes me back to being a child in the early 2000s watching Click for the first time and the time that surrounded it I grew up on 90s music and it makes me reminisce of all the great and bad times in my life I’m so thankful for life for god giving all these blessings I have in my life. P.S don’t get nasty over my religious statement if you believe differently you don’t have to be so negative I will believe whatever I choose to anywho with that out of the way keep calm and rock on 🤘.
