This is one of my favorites too. I always dig peoples reactions to this movie, but yours is the most enthusiastic. To answer a few of your questions, this was made by Nobuhiko Obayashi, who used his daughters imaginative fears as inspiration. He made commercials in Japan which partially explains the strange transitions. He was also inspired to make a movie about love and loss after experiencing his childhood friends die in Hiroshima. He was asked to make a summer blockbuster after the success of Jaws, and he made this which unfortunately didn’t get the same recognition. This film was loved by Japanese children, and hated by adults, and it didn’t find it’s cult status until it found it’s way to the internet, and International audiences loved it. Due to the strange circumstances surrounding this movie, you are regrettably wrong to say that their are more movies like this, unfortunately it’s one of a kind, and I am always on the lookout for similar films. A few movies that to me could almost pass as a reasonable follow up would be Valerie And Her Week of Wonders, Daisies, Alice In Wonderland, Lady Snowblood, or perhaps Belladonna of Sadness. None of the movies above are quite the same, but they might keep you entertained. Thanks for reviewing this movie, and let me know if you find any films that are similar. 😉

I never heard of this movie before I saw it listed on MAX. The cheesy title graphic caught my eye. So glad I decided to watch it out of the blue. More folks need to see this.

Do you come with your own wind? Hilarious! 'Best movie I've ever seen...what the hell am I looking at'. Exactly. My fave. Movies you may like: The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and her Lover; Delicatessen; City of Lost Children; Yellow Submarine. Akira Kurusara's 'Ran'. These films are not for everyone.

"they dont make movies like this anymore" well except for this director who kept making movies like this till 2019 - worth checking out more

I made the initial comment at the start but based on your outro thoughts, there are movies and genres that have swathes of stuff like this. Kung fu movies (wuxia especially) have loads, Zu warriors of magic mountain a great example, like i said, this director has a tonne, and you know what, just an offshoot, but... message from space!
If you want some more pretty out there movies, I highly recommend Kamillions (which you can find here on KZbin) which is a really low budget direct-to-video productions from '89 with the voice actor for Dr. Kleiner from Half Life playing one of the characters in the movie. Absolutely bonkers and a very hidden gem. I'd also check out the filmography of Bertrand Mandico, who's a French experimental filmmaker who makes really provocative and gender-bending films, my favorite of which personally is She Is Conann. (But be warned his movies use a lot of sexual imagery and themes, but they're so damn good.)
