2007 was the last time I had followed college football religiously, as 2008 was when real life caught up, and since then I pretty much only follow my team (Iowa State) and my conference (Big XII) closely. I am still stuck in 2002 - 2007 as a CFB fan, and when I look back on 2007, it really seemed like the end of an era in a way. Alabama's dynasty, NIL (behind the scenes and not nowadays), reallighment, etc. I think my life picked a good time for me to go out as a CFB junkie. Nevermind the fact that 2007 was one if the greatest years of my life in general. I remember the KU/Mizzou game vividly. I was so hyped for it as a Big XII North guy (and really Big 8 guy at heart), that I even recorded it to VHS (sadly lost the tape years since), and I HATE Mizzou and KU as an Iowa State alum. The fact that I was willing to swallow that hatred for one night speaks volumes about that game going into it. Go Big XII baby. We are stronger than ever now, and the parity going forward is going to make these coming years VERY exciting. Anyone will be able to win the conference going forward. Even Kansas (as long as Leipold sticks around).

2021 definitely seems like the sequel to 2007. *Two weeks ago:* Bowling Green, 30.5 point underdogs, defeat Minnesota. NC State knocks Clemson out of the Top 10 for the first time since 2015. *Last week:* Unranked (albeit, 4-0) Kentucky beats #10 Florida; Kentucky had lost 33 of their last 34 games against the Gators. Unranked Stanford (2-2 this time) defeats #3 Oregon. *This week:* #10 BYU falls to unranked Boise State. And now the biggest upset POSSIBLE: Unranked Texas A&M defeats ALABAMA; not only that, Jimbo Fisher just became the first ex-Saban assistant to actually beat him. Saban is now 24-1 against his former staff. We're still missing the procession of random teams rising to the Top 5, but... well, sequels aren't supposed to top the originals.

@brian24402 жыл бұрын
It’s not really close to 2007. Even among the upsets we have had they weren’t massive margins of expected victory and the “underdog” teams weren’t necessarily that big of underdogs. Stanford beat Oregon in Stanford, and it had to go to OT, as a program that was ok for the Pac12 (not dead last for the last 5 seasons) A&M beat Alabama at home, which they have had a history of doing before, and A&M was just 1 week removed from being previously ranked. There’s a big difference between A&M at home beating #1, and #1 losing to 5-7 team in 3OT or a Top 5 team losing to an FCS program. Even games like #10 BYU vs Boise State, statistically this was considered the hardest remaining game for BYU, despite Boise States record. At 2-3 (yes the worst record for Boise State since 1996), two of the Broncos loses were by less than 3 points in games that BSU led by 17+ in each. Overall BSU has a 8-4 record against BYU.

People act like it was current Alabama or Ohio State was getting upset every weekend. Parity happens when the refs intervene or there's just no dominant team. One of the weirdest things about this season were the final rankings from the AP poll. Ohio state dropped all the way back to 5 after losing the national title and Missouri(#4) was ranked ahead of WVU(#6) despite West Virginia destroying the team that ruined Missouri's national title hopes. USC and Georgia were also both moved up several spots for beating pretty weak teams in their bowl games. I suppose one of the pro's that came from the CFP were semi finals that legitimized the teams in the championship so they wouldn't get cucked in the final rankings.

Top teams just draw too much talent in. You've got like 95‰ of 3 star recruits going to like 4 schools
@osu5inarow4 жыл бұрын
Many reasons tbh. Recruiting is partially one but a big one is commitment. Schools like Cal used to extremely committed to sports hence why they were producing guys like Jackson, Lynch, Rodgers, Forsett, like it was nothing. However things change. Same thing for Kansas. They're committed to basketball and that's it. Everything goes to basketball. You can even say the same for UNC, UConn, etc. Hell Roy Williams was a big hidden reason Butch Davis was fired from UNC with that power struggle. Then you have the big realignment. Pitt shot themselves in the foot by moving to the acc which abandoned their recruiting grounds for all sports as they thrived on the northeast kids from states like New York. Rutgers moving to the big ten basically gave their home state kids reason to now go to Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, etc. A lot of those moves sort of killed off a lot of programs. The Big East dissolving really did a lot of damage to their old schools as they've struggled since then outside of West Virginia who's been decent.
@trainboy324 жыл бұрын
We kind of did in the early days of the playoff Mississippi state was ranked 4th at one point
@bigbossman39874 жыл бұрын
osu5inarow 4 & 5 star recruits only make up 7% of all players in college football. No team with a roster that’s made up of less than 50% of 4 & 5 star players has won an FBS football national championship in well over 20 years. The 4 teams in the 2019 CFP, percentage of their roster made up with 4 & 5 star recruits. Ohio St. - 80% LSU - 65% Clemson - 60% Oklahoma - 60% Remember now, 4 & 5 stars only make up 7% of the players. That’s why you continue to see the same handful of teams year in & year out in the Conversation of who can play for and win national championships in college football at the FBS level. That’s because most of those teams have the majority of all of the best players in the country !!! It’s gonna take a lot to knock Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ohio St., Oklahoma, Clemson, alone with a small handful of other programs off of their perch at the top of major college football, as long as those programs continue to recruit at the level that they do on a yearly basis !!
