I watched this race at a bar called "The Bar" in Goodview, Minnesota with my girlfriend, Denise. At the time she was from Minnesota and I was from Ohio. It was the first race she'd ever watched, and her and I even had a picture on the front page for a local newspaper from Winona, Minnesota. I saw a young man taking pictures at The Bar and asked (somewhat jokingly) if he was a freelance photographer? He replied that he worked for the Winona Daily News, and I told him I was in town to see Denise and watch the 500 with her. He asked If I would mind if he pictured us for a spot in the newspaper, and I said of course not. That would be great! The picture that made the newspaper was of me fist pumping the start of the 500 and yelling "Yesss!" and Denise sitting next to me smiling beautifully at the television while I expressed my enthusiasm. As the race came to the conclusion I was rooting for Mark Martin to win. I am a die hard Dale Jr. fan, but I truly wanted to see Mark get a pinnacle win on his career. Of course Mark didn't win, but I was not terribly hurt by Harvick taking the checkers either. Denise passed away from complications from a surgery in 2013, but I still remember this race as a highlight in our relationship. It was the day she became a true NASCAR fan like myself. Thank you for the break down, S1apShOes. You brought back many fond memories for me this evening.

Great video, and I can tell it's a significant moment for you personally as a Mark Martin fan. For me, this race still stands out in infamy as my brother and I picked Tony and Kurt to win the race. Kurt was my pick, so I followed his progress most of the week. It may seem like it in hindsight, but hardly anyone seemed to be picking Kurt to win that 500. He was overlooked in each broadcast, including the Shootout, where he ran 3rd, and the Twin 125s, where he finished 2nd to Jeff Gordon only because Gordon had an illegal car. He broke out in the 500 itself, when he led most of the laps because Tony Stewart's dominant car kept giving up track position with miscues on pit road. It would've been incredible if they both made the distance as they were clearly the class of the field, but that's how things go in the 500. At least Kurt didn't finish last like Tony - which I still rib my brother about.
