Used to drive one of these, but mine was the AX GT.1360ccs,around 85 bhp. and weighed about the same as an Amazon delivery box! On a winding back road, nothing could get close, not even a Golf GTI. Normally aspirated engine, with a HUGE twin-choke Solex carburettor. The later GTI model had the same engine, but with fuel injection, and a slight increase in bhp. Knew a guy who turboed a diesel model. Same size block(1360ccs),and it pushed out around the same power as the GT,but he had problems keeping the engine cool enough in the long term,so I think he gave up on it,eventually.

It weighed around 650kg from memory but, it had very soft suspension as seen here. Great wee car for skidding about, we used to handbrake around the streets in the snow and the car parks. That’s how I learned to control oversteer, that experience saved me a few times too in the wet and snow over the years! As a one time owner of an AX ( AX Spot, 956cm3 gasoline engine, seats of the sport/GTI variant though, 650Kg of fun ), and having driven it about 100K kms in France and UK ( yes... UK ) it was a really fun car to drive, as long as you didn't mind the back wandering a bit when things were slippery ( because all the weight was in the front. ). Sadly it got wrecked in an accident long ago, I still miss it for the fun it provided. Also it can be seen as the 80s/90s version of the 2CV. ( though a lot less rustic )

I owned an AX 11TRE in the 90's...great little car! It was by far the lightest in its category, very fun to drive. And with lowered spring and sporty shock adsorbers it also had excellent handling...

What I love in the AX is that the full body flexes and is “part” of the suspension. Just a coincidence in the engineering

@@simsnqta I had driven an AX GT almost brand new. It felt like it had a chassis built by gel :-) . I also was a passenger in an AX after 100.000 Kms in 25 years driven nicely. It felt like a puzzle of plastic and metal , really “soft”. But, the AX converted for tarmac races are just spectacular

I had an AX 1.1 with 55 HP - according to the registration papers, it had a kerb weight of around 650 kg which made the AX the car with the best power/weight ratio in its performance class. It handled well and due to the low weight, even the skinny 135 tyres had enough traction. You did pay a price, though. My car (pretty basic trim level) had very poor soundproofing so it was very noisy, especially on longer motorway rides. And it was of a very flimsy build quality and passive safety was weak. Crumple zones were small and the doors' Main job was to keep the rain out. One day, a Mercedes T-boned my car at a moderate speed of 20 kph (or less), totalled my car and used up every structural defence to protect me. Just a little more would have eaten into me as the driver. Since then, passive safety ranks a lot higher when I'm shopping for a car...

Ha! Wonderful! The AX was an extraordinary car. It was all about weight. The 10E model had a petrol motor (E for essence, D for diesel), so it can't be both a 10E and a diesel. But... A wonderful car. It could be driven on the limit on the highway and only the very compliant springs on the slower models held it back. Skinny tyres were not an issue; it weighed under 700kg. There was a GT model which was quicker but somehow.lost some of the charm. The AX was not just another supermini. But... On the Nurbirgring it does look fun.

Look at those beautifully smooth, controllable slides! Some may laugh but, he's clearly having fun! Perhaps more fun then the people in the much faster modern cars which put you on a knife edge the moment you approach the limit. He can use 100% of the car's power, grip and handling almost all the time, and still be at relatively sane speeds. He is probably smiling while the Porsche driver is sweating like mad

Amazing car! I had one and I miss it very much. I remember when I had it that I had to make every weekend a journey from Braga to Porto - about 50 Km ride - and, many times, I would leave Braga with the low fuel light on, that meant the car was already spending fuel from the reserve, and I would arrive at Porto with the light still on and still enough fuel to cross the city to where I lived. A very economic and reliable car. Miss you, AX!!

And in the end of the video, you can see that he overtook the red Suzuki Swift back again, which occurred earlier the other way around. It must be due to his driving exceptional abillities on the wet, that he went first again. The Citroën AX driver.
