Always wash flannel before you use it in quilting, it shrinks a lot! It will distort your blocks. Prewash . Your other quilt-quality cotton fabrics won’t noticeably shrink much and don’t require pre washing. Regular calico and apparel cottons, even craft cottons, will shrink. Prewash. If you mix them without taking this little extra bit of effort in preparation to sit down at the machine to enjoy the stitching up of your blocks you might end up regretting it. Also, some of the beautiful fabrics in this great windfall you have received respond very poorly to being laundered- glittery ones, those with a sheen to them… Just a bit of friendly, supportive advice from one quilting teacher to another. I prefer to cut strips ahead of time. 1in. 2in. 3in. 4in . Wide in each of my fabrics, makes itgo a little faster for the piecing and sewing

I DON'T THINK I HAVE EVER SEEN A CRAZY QUILT THAT WAS N'T BEAUTIFUL . I LOVE TO SEW AND MAKING STRIP QUILTS, RAG QUILTS AND CRAZY QUILTS IS MY FAVORITE THINGS TO SEW . Great sewing and instruction. CRazy quilting is a bit too fiddly for me but a great way to use up scraps. BBTW, the shiny silver fabric appears to be Lame, pronounced la-may. Thanks for helping to keep this wonderful craft alive and well.👍

We use that very same term - they have graduated. To us so much kinder to the ears!! When you have trimmed or cut fabric on the foundation fabric I have held my breath - I would have cut the foundation a long time ago!!! I loved your beautiful idea to give this quilt to charity and I particularly love the Christmas theme. I too would like to do that, especially for an elderly person who perhaps doing it tough, or a young person who's on the street. I'm going away with hubby for a couple of months, coincidentally, to the U.S. (Va) to visit our only son and the grandchildren, at Easter and when we return, I think that'll be a good time to look through my scrap basket to see what I've got so I can get started on it. Pellon SF 101: shape flex one-sided adhesive makes a great foundation for a crazy quilt patchwork. Sew pieces on to 101 foundation adhesive side UP...AFTER all pieces are sewn THEN press and square up block. If you do not want to use batting between top and back, it's great as a Summer Quilt between top and back. It's lightwt and flexible and NO paper to tear out.

Thanks for this great video. I just started doing a crazy quilt, and it is a hot mess on my table while working on even one block, lol. But after each block, I put my fabrics back into their color piles for when I do the next one. We have a Goodwill Outlet where I buy old clothes, curtains, bedspreads, sheets, etc. by the pound. It comes out to about $1 an item. Otherwise I find even regular Goodwills too expensive for making a crazy quilt. It takes a lot more fabric than I thought. Thanks so much for the great tutorial!

This was fabulous... And I love these kinds of scrap busting blocks, specially for novelty fabric. You can always cut strips off your fabrics with a ruler in different widths to get straight sides. If you always cut opposite of your selvage to keep that info if needed later. This was a fun video to watch. You definitely inspired me. Thank you and I enjoyed the stories so don't stop doing that. I have used old, stained, thin, white sheets (that had small holes) for foundation piecing on. But, I like using cheap copy paper better (because I get to remove the paper and check my seams). It is a very pretty block. Nice job. I like to use flannel on the back of my quilts.

This was a great video. The only thing I got confused on was the 2nd piece of foundation on your table. It was hard to tell what you were covering or what still needed to be covered.

I love the crazy quilt. However it looks as if there's a lot of wasted fabric putting in your scraps having to cut away is there a way that you can assemble this block without having to cut so much of it off? Thank you

We quilters hate to waste fabric and we do our best to not waste any more then we need to. Yes you can cut smaller pieces from your scraps and use them in your crazy quilt blocks.

I use pages from an old phone book as my foundation and then quickly tear them out (they come out super fast like paper piecing) this way, I don't have any additional backing on my blocks.

I love making crumb blocks but without foundation. What is the difference in the a crazy and crumb block or is there an advantage to using foundation?

Great question! I also crumb piece without foundation. The method I use to crumb piece doesn't work with a foundation, and doesn't need to be stabilized as I crumb with all the same type of fabric. The method I demonstrated for the crazy quilt is quilter's choice. However, I do it to give me a consistent size block and stabilization for utilizing different types of fabric. It also lends some stability when I do the embellishing. Most of the traditional crazy quilts were sewn on foundation. I hope this answers your question. Be careful taffeta isn't washable. That was the plaid shiny one. Sometimes if you aren't sure leave it out. Other than that you did a great job. I taught quilt outside the box as some want to add too many rules.

By having the other foundation squares under the one you are working on it is very confusing as to where you are in piecing.....also, I would use only cotton fabric to be sure the whole block shrunk the same amount.

I have 2 flannel shirts and they have not shrunk. I've had them for about 5 years and wash them frequently. I think some of the flannel is mixed with some kind of syntnetic, keeping it from shrinking.

There was a thin, white fabric in the pile of the fabric I received from that passed on quilter. If I would pick something I had, or needed to buy, I would use either muslin, a white solid, or a darker solid (depending on color of fabric used to crazy piece on top). It really doesn't matter, as it is the back and no one will see it. Because I will embellish by hand on the top, the only thing I wouldn't use is batting. Just quilter's choice. Remember, there are no rules to quilting, just guidelines. I have thought about trying a sew-in interfacing. I'm not sure if it would be easy to use or not. Just sharing thoughts that go through my head at times. Thanks for stopping by and happy quilting!

You might want to wash that red flannel before putting into a quilt. The red dye will bleed onto the other fabrics.

I just fuzzy cut some Christmas fabric. Starting the center of crazy quilt with a multiple sided piece makes it easier.
