Many years ago, I read this quote from an American pioneer woman about quilts. "We made them as fast as we could so that we wouldn't freeze to death, and as beautiful as we could so that we wouldn't lose our minds." It brings tears to my eyes every time I think of it. Thank you, Carlos & Arne, for this lovely video.

There was a memoir called The Quilt from a man who visited his Scandinavian grandparents on isolated farms in Northern Minnesota as a boy in the days people traveled in wagons. When the women gathered for a birth or death they brought a community quilt with pieces of clothing from people who had died. As they sewed each piece they shared stories of that person.

I love the fact that you use tools like most of us have and not the state of the art perfect tools.. like dull scissors and a kitchen towel for a press cloth. Also doing it on a regular dining table. It's encouraging to see you guys "making do" with what you have. I was raised with the mindset of "Use it up, wear it out, make do or do without.". Times are not that difficult for me as that, but I still don't like wasting anything. I have my grandmother and my mother's clothes. I have a memory quilt that my mother hand pieced with my grandmother's dresses, that were cotton. It is grandmother's fan. I think a crazy quilt is a perfect idea for me to make with my mother's clothes as they are not all cotton. Mixed fabric will be great on a crazy quilt. Thank you, I learn alot from you two! Great personalities that are enjoyable to watch also!

Hello Arne and Carlos, greetings from St Petersburg, Florida. I'm a fairly new listener/watcher. I've been inspired by your knitting tutorials and today as I did my daily one hour of knitting ( I knit hats for charity) I watched the video on crazy quilting. Oh my goodness, I'm so inspired. My mother was a meticulous quilter and it was too regimented for me so I never quilted. I'm now 70 years old and I'm heading for my stash of fantastic fabrics I've had for years and never used. I didn't know what to do with them but I love and could not part with them. Next month after my visitors leave from out of state...I'm going to begin a crazy quilt. So excited. I have lots of lace from the 70's and fabric too. As well as some UFO's inherited from my mother and some UFO's of my own. Thank you so much for all your inspiration. I'm eager to take on the quilting world. Wishing you both many many blessings in this life.

It was so unwieldy to work with but my bucket list is to do another and this approach is perfect. I want to say what excellent intuitive teachers you are because you anticipate my questions and answer them without my asking as you go along, which increases my ability to concentrate and watch closely without buzzing thoughts in my head. Thank you, Arne and Carlos! As always I am so happy to be learning a way to make something beautiful and not „the only right way“. I think any child would love a crazy quilt exactly because of the stories in the fabric. The ones actually remembered like „this is from the fabric/garment of...“ and the ones just made up because they look at the fabrics and think about dragon scales, princess dresses, like to touch of this one, see a treasure in that one..... I remember doing this a lot as a kid with a blanket or rug somebody made. You are truly inspiring and always helping me to remember that a hobby like knitting or sewing should be fun and beautiful not a showcase of how I followed all the rules. ❤️

I had already decided to use my wedding dress to make a quilt. It's been in a suitcase for 25 years. If I make a quilt, then it will be useful rather than a bit of clutter. My wedding dress's skirt is a soft white satin, and the bodice is lavender satin, with a soft white lace jacket. The year after I married, my brother married, and I made a soft purple skirt from a fabric that looks like raw silk. Then about 5 years ago, I made a deep purple dress for a friend's wedding. It is also satin, but I used the 'wrong side' rather than the shiny. These three wedding outfits will form the basis of my quilt. I'll add a load of lace too. Thank you. I would never have thought to use these old clothes in this way.

Yea! So glad to see this topic come up. I love watching you decide the fabrics because that's just how it goes for me, maybe here....no, maybe here...no....right there, yes! It's also a good idea to look for clothes in thrift stores, I sometimes buy larger clothes for the trims and buttons and sometimes the material is nice too. Men's button down shirts are great for lots of material. A lot of women buy wedding dresses and cut them up to use and sell. I'm kind of going into a sewing phase again myself, I like to work on quilting when it's cooler, so far I do all of mine by hand so the warmth of the material is nice on my lap. I thoroughly enjoyed your tutorial and will be looking forward to the next video and to seeing Carlos's block.

You have definitely inspired me. I've been wanting to make something special with the things my relatives have left me and you have shown me so many ideas to make special pieces for my children. Loving your videos and I've subscribed!

Such a pleasure to watch you two work. I’m excited to not pass up all those ragged garments and linens at the thrift stores that have sections of beautiful fabric remaining! Your method is something I can do❤ Thanks 🌸

I love the organic approach with the spontaneous results. Your teamwork is fun to watch, also. Scraps come to life!
