The Creative Jews of Sicily | Dr. Katherine Aron-Beller | 16.1.2022

The session on Sicilian Jewry will reveal the little known and almost forgotten cultural heritage of Jewish communities on the island that have long ceased to exist and their memory has almost faded away. The Jews’ situation in medieval Sicily was a highly fluid one, riddled with ambivalence, the blurring of boundaries, cooperation as well as resistance, and a creative responsiveness to the “other” in Sicilian society. A few Jews were involved in medicine, trade, astronomy and mathematics, but most of them were poor artisans, craftsmen and laborers or farm-hands. We will meet the famous messianic figure of Sicily and some of the Jews who supported him.

Thanks for your wonderful program shedding light on the Sicilian Jews. My paternal and maternal ancestors were Jewish. Some were jewelers others were teachers and my grandfathers family owned and still owns a very large vineyard in Trapani my father’s family were chemists in Marsala. Their surnames were Russo, Pipitone and D’Angelo. I was able to find about 35 ancestors as conversos that were killed in Palermo inquisition in 1530-60 burned at the stake some disappeared and others had all property confiscated. So I spent a decade gathering proof of linage and was accepted as Jews now by a beit din recognized in Israel. I tried to right a wrong and feel I have achieved it. I did not convert to Judaism because I was from Jewish ancestry. It was a TESHUVAH (Return) to Judaism I felt very strongly about that fact Many people still do not recognize the beautiful history of Jews in Sicily or the horrors of Jews at that inquisition time. I have never been to Sicily. My grandparents who arrived here in 1912 said don’t ever go to Sicily it’s not a good place. Of course now I know why she said that. BTW that grandmother maternal RUSSO was the one who told me as a child all about the fact they were Jews from Spain who had to leave Spain but she also said her Russo roots were from Russia too.
