Whether it’s actually true or not that “the makers of Robocop 2 knew that the film was shit ,” it is true that the film is a very good analogy for what Robocop and the Robocop franchise became, after it was turned in to a kids’ cartoon show , several tv series’s and obviously two regrettable sequels.

I always thought there was a message about how the basic laws of society are eroded by passing endless legal statutes that over-complicate law enforcement and the justice system and create injustice and allow unscrupulous lawyers to find loopholes in that system. Murphy works best when his directives are kept simple. The Law is fairer when it is kept simple and the majority can understand it. Complicate Law with legality and endless statutes and it becomes easy for those in the know and with money and influence to manipulate it to their own ends.

In all honesty Lee, you've probably given alot more smarter thoughts and ideas than anyone who was working on Robocop 2. I despised all of it. It's story, execution and even the humour isn't as funny. The first movie is incredible as even though everyone was having falling outs, they all contributed something. Christ parables, the privatization of everything except the soul whether it's god given or cosmic... It's so good and i am still waiting for a somewhat half decent remake/sequel to also come out this franchise. Good review!

Your setup is wrong - the original Robocop did VERY well with younger audiences, so the cartoon, toys, and, in part, Robocop 2 was the studios reaction to that. Same thing happened with Ace Ventura. Kids loved it so they started focusing on that audience.
@PeakedInterest5 жыл бұрын
The original movie was an 18 how could it possibly do very well with kids? They couldn't even go see it. Even if they saw it on pirate there would be no data to support your point. Maybe when it came out on VHS it did well with younger audiences but by that point the cartoon and toys had already been out so its more likely that the toys and cartoon generated the interest in the sequel Edit: checked release dates for VHS and cartoon. VHS released Feb 88 Cartoon released Oct 88 So you could have a point I think the general thesis of my essay is still correct though, the second movie was clearly written with a tongue in cheek stab at how marketing was aimed at kids

I don't know if you are aware of this but Robcop 2 was based off a script written by Frank Miller which years later ended up becoming a comic book miniseries entitled "Frank Miller's Robocop". It was ultra violent. It had many characters and plots in it that ended up on the cutting room floor that imo would have made Robocop 2 a better movie. But they were probably coerced into dumbing the movie down a bit so it wasn't such a gut punch to the audience since kids were showing an interest in the franchise. Basically the script was Robocop 2 & 3 as one story. So if anyone was making fun of Robocop for being marketed as "family friendly" it was Frank Miller.

I've been telling people for years Robocop 2 is a meta-commentary about itself and someone just linked me your video. It's spot on. The film is a lowkey masterpiece, but in a completely different way than the original. Very few movies are as self aware as Robocop 2. How many franchises have two amazing movies in them? Not many, but Robocop does, and it's sad because Robocop 2 is so low key it doesn't get mentioned or talked about nearly as much as it should. The surface level stuff is shallow, but that's the entire point. And it's genius.

Your analysis on RoboCop 2 is really good. Seriously, I've never looked at RoboCop 2 in such a way that you have. @@PeakedInterest Actually, I thought you were going that way with your analysis. Robocop 2 is a mean spirited movie compared to the first, but it's meant to be! This movie was a criticism of what the studio wanted the writers to do, which is where the series ended up - aimed at children

Cain, who left the presence of his creator to dwell in a city of his making, content with his own possessions. Even the name of the villain seems to fit. Cain dwelt in the land of Nod, (C&C franchise uses this idea) the land of wandering, away from his intended purpose.

nice theory. although I really thought the sequel had a great satire over political correctness which was forced down Robocop's cyberbrain. Now with the war on police in US going full swing, it really makes an impact

@@PeakedInterest I really appreciate you having done this video. I really like RoboCop, I consider myself a fan from the first time I saw part 1 in 1989. I was a 9 year old boy then. Years later i rushed to the nearest "blockbuster" to rent part 2. I saw it and years later being an adult I saw it again, thinking it was about a critic to capitalism and that sort of thing. And now you've mentioned that this movie was a subtle cry for help from the creators (just like the woman who called for a pizza warning them that she was a victim of domestic violence). Is that a good analogy?

Yeah, it never made sense to me to market adult films to kids via toys. Imagine porn stars marketed as action figures.
@PeakedInterest4 жыл бұрын
Exactly.
@circular_entropy3455 Жыл бұрын
Most toy lines were based on the cartoon based on the movie(s) and not so much the movie itself. The only exceptions were Terminator 2, Predator, and Alien/Aliens (though the toys from the latter were originally supposed to accompany a cartoon which never happened).
@PeakedInterest Жыл бұрын
@Circular_Entropy its crazy they made kids cartoons out of violent adult moves to be honest.
@circular_entropy3455 Жыл бұрын
@@PeakedInterest To be fair for RoboCop, he basically is a superhero, and Marvel produced both the comics and the cartoon. Even in Terminator 2 Arnie was a good guy, and they never made toys for the first one, so that makes sense that they wouldn't solely market a villainous character for kids. The other ones are definitely odd.
@PeakedInterest Жыл бұрын
We can attribute it to reagans changing of advertising standards in the 80s really. He basically made direct to consumer TV marketing via cartoons possible and that's why there were so many kids cartoons for adult movies, they basically sold toys from their favourite violent movies to parents via kids using cartoons as the medium.
