Regardless of his enemy status Wittman was incredibly talented, brave and a strong leader. As a tank commander MOS 19E30/armor instructor myself (1979-87, M48a5 and M60a1), I studied his tactics and qualities and can appreciate what he did for his men and in battle. It is only too bad he was on the wrong side of history.

Had Wittman stayed in concealment and waited for his unit to show up, there would have been far more damage to the allies. They had no idea he or his unit were there, he "let the cat out of the bag." Had he not gone "Cowboy", his unit would not have faced an alerted enemy and an ambush. He retires for fuel and ammo, and leads his unit back into an ambush... The 17pdr of the Firefly gave off such a muzzle flash that it was named the Firefly. The crew was instructed to close their eyes right before pulling the trigger to keep from being blinded!

Has anyone ever seen the story online, not sure if it was on here or a FB page, about a Tiger tank on the Eastern Front?, it was told by a Russian soldier. It concerned a Russian armoured column followed by supply trucks that was attacked by a lone Tiger. The Tiger blasted the convoy to pieces destroying lots of Russian tanks and then doing the same to the trucks. When the chaos settled down the Tiger had disappeared... or so the Russians had thought but it was hidden in a lower part of the terrain. When Russian reinforcements arrived the Tiger opened fire again destroying a lot more Russian tanks but it was eventually destroyed killing all of the crew. If anyone has a link to this or any other information I would appreciate it.

I DO NOT undersatnd from the get-go WHY British and American tank designers did not put bigger caliber and higher muzzle velocity cannons on their TANKS! You mean to tell me that they did NOT know that the cannons they were using on their tanks would be almost completely ineffective against German armor!!
@the_midnight_mechanic_stua15034 ай бұрын
I don't think they embraced mobile warfare as the Germans did. America wasn't looking for the next war. Britain was too far blinkered with appeasement and only kept light tanks. Mobile fortresses on tracks were not the current thinking of British armed forces
@CT_Her4 ай бұрын
Buddy, bigger cannons mean bigger and heavier tanks, resulting in a heavier AFV. In turn, this causes maintenance problems, drains resources, and makes transport of said vehicles harder. Ever hear of soft and hard factors in a tank..?

No doubt he had skill but he and his crew sat behind the 88 and a whole lot of armor destroying inferior armored vehicles, Kind of reminds me of German air aces with huge kill numbers on the Eastern Front. When you look at the kill totals for American and British pilots as opposed to the German air aces that's the difference.

Fortunately, I suspected it wasn’t as described and so scrolled along to the end, rather than watch all the way through. Very annoying. And pointless misrepresentation
@AC-awesome4 ай бұрын
He had by far the better tank that was largely impervious to Allied tank guns. So no, it wasn't that amazing. Dark Docs also needs to stop this trend of glorifying Nazi action from WW2. It's pretty sickening.
@opoxious15924 ай бұрын
What the hell do you mean by "glorifying"? These video's are mainly about the tactical and battle skills of the soldiers. This is not about the ideoligy. Maybe guys like you should need to learn to understand the difference about the war being told pure on a tactical, strategic, and technical level. And if you are not able to do this, you should stop complaining about these documentairy's. It's the same like saying i can't be interested about the B-17 bomber and the Lancaster bomber, due the fact that arround 2 million civillians have been killed during the almost 6 years of indiscriminate bombing by the English and the Americans. So again, there is a difference between having an interest in WW2 on a battle level, or having an interest in WW2 on a political level or a ideological level. Some people are mainly interested in WW2 on a logistical level, what is also my new point of interest. About the machines that produced the weapons and ammuntion including the locomotives that transported everything to the warzone.
