Synopsis - Set in World War II, a demented cremator believes cremation relieves earthly suffering and sets out to save the world.
Another fascinating gem of a film in the Criterion Collection. Highly recommended if you like your dark comedies pitch black. And to all those who lament the fact that I never use the original music - well, this one's for you.

Horansky (I guess is that the real name of the main character) is a genius what a character building! You fear him the whole movie even when he's just an eccentric guy the camera angles helps too much.

"...je to v podstatě zařízení na urychlené spalování co největšího počtu lidí, aby se co nejvíce duší vymanilo z okovů tohoto bytí, vzlétlo do vesmíru, rozplynulo se v éteru. Myslím že je to veliká příležitost protože v mém krematoriu trvá dokonalá přeměna nebožtíka v prach 75 minut a každý má svou pec. Víte, kdyby byly takové obrovské společné pece kam by se jich vešlo najednou sto, pět set, tisíc, dalo by se to dělat třeba za deset minut. Takové celé haly které by byly ve stálém provozu, to by se moc ušetřilo. Z jedné strany by se tam dávala těla, nejlépe po sto kusech, z druhé strany by se sypal popel. On by se sice smísil ale to by nebyla vada protože v popelu není rozdíl. A hořejškem by se valily osvobozené duše..."
