Just bought this knife for everyday farm use, not self defence and I'm loving it. I really like the blade thickness because my knives tend to take abuse. The size is not an issue and the weight to me us a bonus. The price point is great in that if it does give out it is replaceable at a reasonable cost. I may just buy more as gifts. It's a $25 knife not a not a high end tool.

Please CRKT, listen to Nick on this. So many of us love your designs but do not care for low end blade steels and sub par QC. Knives like Nick mentioned, the Jettison and the Razel, I would include the Buku and the Fossil. I would be more than willing to spend high end money on these designs with quality blade steels,quality handle/scale material and top level fit and finish (I.E. not teflon washers!). The knife community will certainly make it worth your while.

I'm not going to pretend to know how they assemble their knives but, having worked in manufacturing myself, I know assembly quality is greatly affected by the integrity of the equipment the workers are provided with. Imagine things being being assembled in an, old, worn out wooden assembly jig that allows parts to move about compared to a steel, engineer built jig. The worker takes the finished product out and his work is done whether the f+f is good or not. It's the companies job to see their infrastructure driving the quality

They must have listened because all of the complaints you mentioned were taken care of. The blade symmetry was equaled out, the tip is set back farther into the body, and the labeling on the blade was moved off the grind slope. It still has the slow teflon opening but it's not awful. It's been good so far. All around decent edc

Nick - Very much enjoy your reviews. Hemingway's boat the Pilar (pronounced Peelar) has been restored and is moored at the Hemingway House/Museum outside of Havana. If you have the opportunity pick up Gregory Hemingway's brief memoir on his father "Papa" very entertaining, particularly Hemingway's gin soaked hunting of U-Boats in Caribe with a U.S. Gov provided 500lb bomb mounted on Pilars' bridge!

I gotta say, the Pilar that I purchased is much better than what's in the review. Maybe that's a sign of quality control problems, but there are some higher quality instances of this knife out there. Mine has very good action, even blade grinds, and the maker mark is printed fully on the flat of the blade. Maybe I got a later production run?

Nick, great review I agree completely CT should come out with a premium line with high end materials and better quality control. Low production would help the improve the brands identity.

Just picked one up. Not only was the issue with the blade overhang dealt with, but they corrected the problematic lettering on the blade. I personally REALLY like this knife. It does most general EDC stuff really well and clips in the pocket rather unobtrusively. The weightiness of the knife is offset by the fact it’s so darn small and easy to carry. Going with G-10 or FRN would obviously lighten the thing up, but would it really be worth it at the price point? I DO agree with the ho-hum blade steel. There are so many better-yet-still-affordable steels to choose from nowadays that sticking with the bargain-basement stuff just doesn’t make sense. Then again the knife WAS made in China, so you know quality was not primarily on the minds of CKRT. But for general knockaround EDC use, you could do worse… … like the KABAR Dozier with the incredibly tight action and painful-as-all-hell thumb stud catastrophe.

A sticky, slow action is actually a *big* plus in certain urban jurisdictions like NYC. I haven't sampled this knife, but if your pocket carry can be whipped open by an adept police officer who's chosen to bust your chops, you're going down to the station. I would never carry a blade in NYC that didn't take deliberation to open.

Hey Nick! I recently picked up a CRKT Batum which is another Vox design. My first order of business was swapping out the teflon for PB washers that I recently picked up for experimentation. I grabbed a bazillion different sizes so I could measure the Teflon washers and match them up correctly, and it’s a completely different knife! It worked amazingly well. It’s a smooth and free swinging as my PM2. If you’re ever gonna keep a knife with teflon, give it a try!
@kashman24267 жыл бұрын
I love this knife. The design is fantastic. The price is fantastic. I love the buttery smooth action after I took it apart and cleaned it. If CKRT is smart they upgrade the materials in a variety of ways. This knife will sell anyways. This is the 2017 budget knife of the year in my opinion. For now ordered 2 more with plans to make make scales and or modify.

Either there are some quality control issues or they listened to your complaints. I bought one about a month ago and the tip of the blade is farther from the end of the knife and the voxnaes is not on that angle anymore, and the grind is pretty symmetrical. The spacer is still not quite perfect, it's like they're rounded or something making a little gap, but it doesn't pop up past the scales anymore. Still heavy, still sharp corners on the thumb hole, action is kinda tight. Feels very sturdy and utilitarian. A nice knife for $25

Nick, I have 4 of these. 3/4 arrived perfectly centered. 3/4 have the full printing on the flat grind of the blade. 4/4 have the tip so far behind the scales there is no way to hurt yourself on it. Popping by in 2022 to say that I have yet to kill my pilar. Just stripped it down and oiled it with gun oil. Velvety smooth now. I always liked the profile, and it fits very comfortably behind the belt (between belt and jeans) for a secure carry. It definitely doesn't hold an edge as long as I'd like, but it sharpens in a snap, so...Eh. Side notes: I love the thick blade and overall weight because: 1. You can pry and jam and do whateverthefuck without worrying about your blade. 2. I have a habit of losing knives that don't make their presence on my belt very well-known, haha.

To your point, Nick, Kershaw has been making a KILLING selling higher end versions of the Link and the Dividend. Same designs, M390 blades, but still under $100. Consumers get a good design with a great blade steel, Kershaw gets paid. Seems like a good business model, so why would CRKT not do likewise? Because, "CRKT just doesn't give a damn." Instead, they are trying to convince people to spend $80 for AUS-8 knives. like the Homefront and the Crossbones. They won't change until they are losing enough money, so I'm committed to not buying JACK from them, you know, to help them make better business decisions.

Nick, I was on the fence about this knife, but after the review, I bought the large with the bearings, so the action is sweet. However, as you mentioned, the steel sucks. But, it was fun putting a new bevel and edge on it. I enjoy the knife for lots of unexpected little projects but wanted a better steel. So, I bought another one with D2. Looking forward to getting it and feeling the difference. It also has bearings but also has G-10, so I'm curious as to how well that performs and what the bearings are riding against on the G-10 side.

i actually just bought this knife last week while i was stuck living in a hotel not too far from cabelas. for $25, it’s a great little knife, but i picked it up on sale for under $19, so even better! :) it definitely feels pretty solid, but it’s not going to have the expensive fit and finish. my grind looks more even than yours, but the edge is not even throughout. still shaved though. also, 8cr13mov is not my favorite steel, but it depends on the manufacturer. kershaw doesn’t do it as good as spyderco, for instance. we’ll see how this one holds up. for a small edc though, i think it’s fine. and, personally, i love the thick blade and heft of the knife overall. i don’t need it, but i appreciate the beefy feeling in hand for the times i’m force to carry a small knife. i agreed with everything you said and i’m super happy with this knife for what it is.

The thing I hate the most is that back spacer. The Cricket (CRKT) large Jettison had that same off-color mystery metal/plastic* ill-fitted thing mashed into where a back spacer goes. Why can't they use the same stock as they used for the scales? Or even the blade steel? It's not like CRKT's blade steel is expensive. I could understand not wanting to make a CPM S90V backspacer... I want one in theory, but...I'd wait for a "sprint run". Webstores like BladeHQ have done CRKT, Kershaw, and Boker limited editions that do seem better then the factory originals. *I disassembled a Jettison and still couldn't quite tell what the backspacer was...Aluminum? Metallic plastic? It wasn't ferrous/magnetic...
@bob_345-g3d7 жыл бұрын
Its your bog standard 6061 aluminum. probably one of the cheapest metals possible to use aside from tin alloy pot metal. That said, 6061 can still be made high quality, but it seems like crkt's use is a simple sliced off extrusion which is then bead blasted.

I noticed that with the Squid. It has a back spacer / lanyard hole. I used it to pry a cap off a bottle and chewed into it. I can't imagine it would be that much more cost or weight to use steel.

Got one. Agree with your points. Surprisingly nice design, also fits my hand well. Thinning the blade some and dropping an oz or more off the weight would make a world of difference. No way I want to cut an apple with this ax of a blade. UPDATE: Not a knife I can carry. Surprisingly fat in the pocket. It's heavier than other, larger knives and is very wide in the pocket. Nice to look at. Not overly usable for me. In addition to the Techno, another similar upscale knife is the Spydie Dice which was recently $110. (I get that you can get 4 of these for one Dice.)

I know you're not a fan of the Sanrenmu 7010 but it's $10 less with phosphor bronze washers and better fit and finish and much better action. So I personally don't see the Pilar as a gem... Other better alternatives would be the TuffLite or the VG-10 Dragonfly 2 maybe used. Or even an Opinel 6. Now if we're specifically talking about pocketknives with blades under 2.5 inches I've become knowledgeable about these out of necessity because I live near Boston. When in Boston I will usually carry my Three Rivers Nomad LTC ( 154 CPM steel, titanium and real carbon fiber which sells for $225), Dragonfly, Roadie, or SAK Cadet. Now with regard to CRKT current offerings I've handled the Drifter and liked it. It's not under 2.5 inches though. It's kind of a SRM 7010 without the stolen design issue. If someone had to have a sub 2.5 on a less than $30 budget I'd suggest the TuffLite or the SAK Cadet. Nick, I and I'm certain many others appreciate your continuing reviews of small knives and budget knives. Please keep it up☺️

With those restrictions are there still folks in the UK who enjoy collecting pocketknives as a hobby or do many of you just get a UKPK and leave it at that?

Oh no Bryan. When I say 'illegal', I mean that only inasmuch as they're not legal to carry outside our own homes. Which, thinking about it, is equally stupid..!!!! (P.S. There's even a Spyderco UK Facebook Page!)

I love Spyderco designs they have some great knives like the UKPK, Roadie, Dragonfly but honestly look at the price in £ from a UK knife store and convert them back into $, all of a sudden they become a bit pricey and not so attractive. it's a shame.

Incorrect/incomplete information. It is legal to carry if you have good reason. I carry mine everyday because i need it for work. Last week i happened to be working in the copshop and whipped it out to get cutting. One WPC said ohhh lemme see that, my husband has same. I said nah love this ones hexclusive. She got him to send her a pic of his Bladehq modified one (addresses Nicks issues in the review) He has his with him for work and hes a drone pilot (???). Point is its legal to carry with good reason. Self protection isnt good reason if a cop searches you. So if going out to cinema, no good reason. Out buying your Christmas tree, and then lashing it to roof or tie down car boot with the aid of your knife id be happy to explain to a cop why it was on my that evening. Mind how you go

Will you ever do a Case XX knife review? I was thinking personally the Russlock. I realize most Case knives have garbage steel, but their scale work and just heritage behind them, a lot more than more of these smaller brands. I guess its the same story as Gerber, lots of heritage, not a lot of innovation.

Samuel Davis their steel isn’t garbage. It’s just not stainless, it gets a patina, and it builds character. It’s personal preference.

Kempo Kid their steel is "surgical steel" but compared to something like S35VN, it pales. However, I had noticed the patina, and it does look vintage, if that's the right word.

To be fair, they probably didn't mark the blade with 8Cr13MoV because all those characters wouldn't fit on a blade that short. LOL!

no idea why everyone is hating CRKT. if they did have perfect QC, amazing tolerances and great steel the price would be the same as spyderco and benchmade knives and then people would complain that they are overprised. if you want the steel, QC and tolerances of a spyderco then just get yourself a spyderco. if you want to hate on someone then you should hate on the designer. HE choose to work with CRKT. if he choose to work with ZT then you would have a better quality version. if you buy a midtech Voxnaes you pay $500. now you have a chance to get the knives of your favorite designers for around $40. how could anyone complain about that?

And we would be willing to pay spyderco prices then, that's what the community wants not this garbage.
